First, your wife is not an attorney. Do not take legal advice from her.

Unless you have a patent issued or a business that utilizes the algorithm, then it's a steep hill for her to climb to prove her claim.

All property acquired or created and income earned during the course of the marriage is joint regardless of who is the nominal owner, subject to specific exceptions, intellectual property not being one of those exceptions. Who does the garden belong to? If she wrote a book, who owns the rights? Of course see if there is some specific exception in your jurisdiction but chances are it's joint.

Assuming it's joint, then it becomes about valuation.

Intellectual property is a class of property, like a house, that tends not to be divisible and then must be valued and the other side bought out. Alternatively, future income streams can be divided. The method that's best for you depends on what the algorithm is doing financially for you now and what you think it will do in the future.

For future developments (post divorce), well that would be separate property and then it would become complicated about determining what percentage of any revenue stream were based upon the old algorithm.

This is all lawyer territory - and it's IP lawyer territory, not divorce lawyer territory. You don't want a brain surgeon to do your triple bypass.

It really depends on your state and how well the lawyers can argue it. If your state requires alimony then she can be entitled to the potential earnings of it. However if is simply a hobby and doesn't generate revenue then she has no reasonable claim to it. As others say, talk to your lawyer.
