I have an older friend who married young. Two pieces of advice she gave me that stuck with me were 1) Always have a back-up plan/plan B, and 2) Always set aside your own savings and don't let your husband touch it or know about it.

I have an older friend who spent years as a homeless crack-whore, after being abused by her father and then her husband. She struggled her way to sobriety and faith, and she was the one who saved me from my narc ex, not by talking him down, but by providing such a contrast to his behavior. He demeaned and belittled and stole from me, and she was kind, gracious, and giving. And she wasn't even getting sex out of the bargain, imagine that! She gave me a place to live, and supported me through everything, always forwarding my decisions as if they were her own. Such an amazing woman. When I looked at her, she shone. After all she had seen and been through, you can guess that she saw right through men and knew their real place in women's lives, but she had no time for bitterness.

The former president of my company that I worked under became like an older sister to me outside of work, and she and her husband became a part of my family during the year that she was here in the US from Germany.

One thing that always stuck with me was one time when we were shopping at Yankee Candle(she loved going there so much that the people who worked there knew her on a first name basis haha). She was buying a ton of candles, and I just jokingly said “Carsten’s probably going to see all these candles and be like “how much money did you spend on all these?”

And her response was “He might, but at the end of the day I’m spending my own hard earned money. Always have your own money, never rely on a man for money. You can’t trust men, even the good ones.”

She honestly taught me a lot about being a strong woman in a male-dominated industry, and how to just be a stronger person in general. But that particular comment always stuck with me.

My friend is 10+ years older than me and she's taught me not to settle, but has also taught me, unfortunately, who to not surround yourself with. She got herself away from an emotionally and verbally abusive relationship. And then she dated a long time friend, who she knew had a history of drug use, altho he'd been clean for a while. Everything went great for months, he seemed wonderful, trustworthy, he was getting her a ring...and he relapsed. Horrifically. She had to cut him out. Her own family is full of abusive people and others who nearly died from drugs (and fairly recently too). I honestly think I'm the only normal person in her life but I haven't seen her in a couple years bc we live far apart. I told her she just needs to find some wholesome people to surround herself with so she has stability, not constant abuse and insanity. I don't know how she's still standing sometimes :(

I don't talk to my mom about dating much (I really should tho lol) but she's a very practical woman and has always had good advice on the rare occasions we've discussed it (and is w/ my dad 40+ years, married 30+ lol, so she knows what's up). Most of my advice comes from a friend my age who has been happily married for a few years.

Not necessarily true. Some of the best ladies I know have been stuck and eyes shut with LVM. Just because they are married and have been for a long time or seem to have their shit together, you might find out they’ve been surviving hell too without realizing it. Stick to the ladies on here. It is the best thing I’ve come across so far. Read all the articles. Study what’s healthy. Be vigilant.

My best friend is my rock. She calls me out on my bullshit and reminds me when I’m doing something that I said I wouldn’t do. She is the biggest cheerleader in my life besides my own mother and I know she’s always going to be there, unlike the men who have come and gone throughout our friendship. Female friends are invaluable!
