Favourite characters/movies? Role models?

Kathleen Hanna and all the riot grrrl bands were a huge inspiration to me over the decades. The song Double Dare Ya by her band Bikini Kill is my personal anthem.

The fact that I’ve been sitting here struggling to think of a single fictional character, show, movie, etc. outside of that is pretty sad. There are pieces of characters that I admire but they are all problematic in one way or another.

But this is a great thread idea and I hope you get some other replies as I think we all could use some positive messaging in our lives.

I really like scifi/fantasy/action movies so this list is going to be mostly that.

Charlize Theron's character in "Mad Max: Fury Road" is really good. Basically steals the movie. In fact that whole movie is really good. I've heard "The Old Guard" is also excellent but haven't watched it yet.

I thought "The Witcher" on Netflix had some good female characters. Everyone talks about Yennifer but Queen Calanthe is goals for me. She's not very feminine though. The show can be a little confusing because the episodes aren't in timeline order.

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" has two really good female main characters. They feel very real to me, despite the movie taking place in ancient China. Plus Michelle Yeoh is amazing and beautiful, the costumes and fight scenes are beautiful. It's all beautiful.

If you're into Marvel shows, "Agent Carter" has the main character constantly out smarting the men while wearing 1940's clothes and heels. You do need to have seen "Captain America" though.

I didn't really have high expectations for "Captain Marvel" but I was pleasantly surprised. No shoehorned romance story line and the climax of the movie is not what you'd expect. You also don't have to watch the other Marvel movies for this one to make sense but some of the jokes and references might not hit the same.

"Alien 2" shows Ripley's maternal side. She isn't super feminine but she still kicks ass. You don't neccesarily have to watch the first one but it is a classic, maybe even defines the sci-fi/horror genre.

Not sure if this list is exactly what you were looking for but these are some of my favorite movies that feature good female characters.

Also, when Blair from Gossip Girl wasn't dealing w chuck bass I loved how she did not look to others for approval or instructions

Elle Woods & Teresita from Queen of the South bc she is stoic. Teresita is always just observing. She looks out for herself first without fucking over others.

Cordelia in the early seasons of Angel. In my younger, Pickme days, I hated her character for being so uapologetically feminine and unwilling to drop everything and put herself last for anyone, for any reason. She contributed as much as she was able to the cause and the team within her skill set but never allowed anyone to guilt trip her into being 100% selfless or shame her for refusing to get good at combat like everyone else or denigrate what she did bring to the table. She demanded equality and respect for her contributions even though she wasn't a fighter/had no interest in becoming one and I'm so here for that energy now that the anti-woman veil has been lifted.

It's so funny to me now that in the initial run of the show I hated her for being so damn proud of herself for refusing to be the "typical badass need nobody, tough action woman" and standing up for herself when people criticized her for it instead of just accepting that she was wrong and everyone else was right, but now she's a role model for the exact same reason.

In the later seasons though, her character was destroyed and turned into the worst kind of middle-aged Pickme because Joss Whedon started to hate the actress who played her.

These might not be the best HV examples, but I always loved loved loved (and sometimes identified with) Jessica Jones (Marvel), Teresa (Queen of the South), Olivia (Fringe) and Yennefer (The Witcher).

I know this is going to age me, but Angela Lansbury in Murder She Wrote. I view her as a role model for good manners and tact. She attracts and interacts with high quality individuals and the few times I’ve seen that a character has dared disrespected her, she tells them off firmly but with civility. She speaks her mind without coming off as hysterical or overly emotional. She is also an inspiration in the sense that she doesn’t need a man to lead a full, interesting life. She is a widow and chooses to chase her dreams and live life to the fullest in her golden years.

Madam Secretary—the series on Netflix! It’s about a female Secretary of State and she is brilliant—smart, funny, cunning—not the usual one-dimensional archetype of powerful women. Also, her husband Henry in the series is the best example of a HVM I’ve ever seen in a series of film. I literally think “what would Henry do” when I’m trying to gauge whether a guy is HV. The costars are actually a couple in real life, too, which is adorable and makes the relationship even more healthy and aspirational.
