I'm a former pickme, stripper, sex worker, cam girl, only fans girl. Coincidentally I have a long history of sex abuse that started as a child. I'm part of the stereotype!

I almost threw up in the shower this morning thinking about my past. Sex work is not a reputable job and it is not empowering. It makes you feel worthless.

What these women don't talk about is that sometimes they don't make a lot of money. I have memories of crying in my car after 8 hours of stripping and only $35 to show for it, after all the fees i had to pay back to the club.

As a cam girl I got a lot of negative attention. Men would occasionally make really horrible comments to me, call me a whore or ugly. It is not empowering. It perpetuates the patriarchy in its entirety. It promotes toxic masculinity, violence toward women, and children, because it also perpetuates sex trafficking and pedophilia. It's just all rolled into one big bad thing.

I have cut out a lot of women friends I knew from the industry. They're all fucking miserable and the older they get the more miserable they get. I used to have a friend who would literally lay in my lap and cry because all she did was prostitute herself out to old scrotes. Her kids hate her, she hates herself. She has zero skills and hobbies because her whole existence revolves around pleasing men. How the fuck is that empowering?

I'm anti porn and sex work and all that now. I see it all for what it is and it's a huge problem. I wish women would wake up and get out of sex work (if they can... cringe)

Hey, some animals WANT to be caged. /s It’s empowering because people pay to look at them, right? Camming is essentially the same as being a zoo animal, but the patrons also want to fuck you.

Just far enough I’d say. “The industry of captive individuals”, “The industry of the purchased”, “the industry where they need help and rehabilitation”. Sounds a lot more accurate than sex worker.

Sorry but I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. I don't dispute that there are shady practices and illegal trades that should be banned to discourage mistreatment of animals. It's the whole reason I swipe left immediately when I see a guy posing with animals in what look to be dubious businesses shilling out wildlife for a quick touristy buck.

At the same time, I've worked as a volunteer at a zoo before and that has given me some insight into why some animals simply can't be returned to the wild despite best efforts.

Some animals may have been too badly injured to be released with a quality of life that ensures they can successfully fend for themselves or hunt or forage for food. And especially if they belong to an endangered species, conservationists would have to consider what the better course of action is for the good of the species.

Some animals may have been born in captivity and have become too reliant on human intervention to live in the wild independently. Some of the birds I worked with in my short stint were hatched by us and they didn't know how to fight for food... they would simply come back to us for more if their lunch was snatched by another bird mid-flight.

Some animals unfortunately have had their habitats destroyed and need a man-made environment that they can live safely in, even rebuild their species size in as part of conservation programmes. Unfortunately, it's not always feasible to have the large patches of reserves that we may see in the Americas or Africa where animals can roam free in a minimally controlled environment. It's obviously not ideal but we'd have to ask ourselves if the alternative - constantly fleeing a shrinking habitat or facing certain death - is truly better.

In a perfect world, we wouldn't have any need for zoos. But until it's a perfect world, the best we may be able to do is advocate for environmentalism and conservation efforts, and do your research so you're in a better position not to accidentally support illegal practices but instead put your money into worthwhile and trustworthy organisations with transparent practices around what they do.

This is not intended as an attack in any way. Rather, zoos are simply not a black and white matter; it would be simplistic to do so.
