Thank you very much for creating this very necessary survey and taking the time to research this topic. I can imagine coming up with it wasn't easy and neither is analyzing the data.

Thank you for posting this and carrying out this research. Ngl, I felt pretty emotional by the end, but it was quite cathartic. Answering questions about how I view myself helped me realise how destructive and untrue my thoughts can be.

I think if you ever do a second survey you could stand for some delineation in some areas. Asking people if anyone would miss them if they went away is a loaded question that is going to be more reflective of mood than what they think.

I.E. if i "went away" my wife and immediate family would be emotionally ruined for a long time, but the condescending shitheads I work with would barely notice. Someone living my life with a clear head, but who is more emotionally invested in career than I am, would be forced to answer that people would care a lot if they went away, meanwhile they could have suicidal ideation from work stress

Or another example: one of my big stress points in life is a lack of time and energy to engage hobbies in a meaningful way. This survey doesnt realy cover that at all, and I imagine many men feel like shit because they live at work and have no balance

Thank you very much for having taken the time to create this survey and to study male suicide. It is a virtually criminally understudied field, and more attention needs to be brought to it.

One suggestion I have would be to separate the questions like "how important are you to others" and "how much do others rely on you" into separate groups. Rather than just lump everyone together into "others", ask "how important are you to family/friends/special someone/others" in 4 separate questions. I feel this could give some very valuable insight into the kinds of relationships that are helpful and supportive to men. Could be that there'S a subset of men who have very difficult relationships with their family and rely almost entirely on friends. Could be a subgroup of men who have a good relationship with their family but fewer friends. Could be that men who have a special someone fare significantly better than other men, all other things being equal.

It could be interesting to tease that data apart, instead of lumping all relationships together into one group of "others".

This was an interesting survey to take.

I thought about killing myself almost daily for about the last 2 years of college (medicine) and even when I did noticed the signs it was difficult for me to try to seek help, though I eventually did. I mostly felt like a burden and a failure to everyone and that was troubling since there were dire economical pressures on my family and I felt it my duty and responsibility to shoulder them. I think that was the driving force in my depression and intent to take my life.

Now i no longer have those feelings, thanks to a change in my own mindset and helps from both professionals and friends.

So seeing the questions and thinking all the time "oh i remember that feeling" "yeah I remember thinking exactly that". It's been a great insight into how much I've changed, how bad it was, how it could have gone.

It is posible to get better and that is something you have to keep in mind. Even if you feel like shit, like a worthless human being and think that your life is going be like that forever, know those thoughts and feelings are but symptoms form a disease. And like the vomits and headaches you can recover from those.

To those of you who still have those thoughts and feel that way, know this It's not true, those are lies, that is the disease talking directly to your brain and it is posible to recover from it. Know that, and find the will to keep battling that disease, for it does not define you. You can get better.

The entire economy and national safety of nations depend on men having artificially low social value, and being desperate and easily exploitable.

No amount of research or studies is going to change that reality. And low to middle class women are slowly being turned into that same sacrificial group as men... all to increase the power, competitiveness, and survivability of nations. That little bit of extra humanity and decency afforded to women will imo be taken away too.

This is slightly off-topic, but I feel it's a positive thing that needs to be said.

Thank you genuinely for proving that, outside of extremist radfem circles, at least a great many and probably by far most women are not misandrist and are fully capable of empathy and understanding.

In a space like this, where it's mostly bad news and negative observations of the problems we face, it's all too easy to focus on the vocal minority of hate activists and consider them more representative of women as a whole than they are. A positive voice like yours is a welcome and much needed counterbalance.

Are the hate activists far too influential and have the poisoned the minds and hearts of too many women? Yes, and their vile influence must be countered to mitigate if not fully prevent the harm they cause. Still, it's just as important to not let them infect us with the reverse of their hatred and to never forget that if most women were hateful by nature than it wouldn't be necessary for the hatemongers to spend so much time and effort manipulating them.

As always when agents of hate divide us against one another, there is more that unites us than what separates us and to forget that is to give the divisive manipulators what they want.

It warms my heart to see male suicide taken seriously. Research is underperformed and desperate needed. When you publish, please let us know. This is an area very important to me.

Btw, I completed the survey. It is not an easy thing to dwell on for the survey length, but it's important.

One thing I noticed is that a lot of the questions didn’t really pertain to me.

Maybe it would be helpful if there were some questions specially about relationships with women, or lack thereof.

To be fair, there were questions about sexuality and body image, but I don’t think there was a way for me to fully explain how I feel and why I answered the way I did outside of trying to leave general feedback.

Because that’s really the main thing that weighs me down, this feeling of really wanting a woman in my life, like having a girlfriend is something I need to be happy, but not being able to get it because I’ve been told “no” over and over again. And it’s weird because otherwise, I like myself and think I’m a likable person. But you can’t be 26 and dateless without beginning to at least emotionally think at times like there must be something wrong with you. And then comes the pessimism, self-loathing, and lack of confidence, feeling like it’s impossible so you should just give up. Basically at this point the idea that a woman could ever love/feel attracted to me, or even just trust me, just seems ridiculous.

I don’t know for certain how common of an experience this is, but I’ve certainly interacted with a quite a few other men, including on this sub, that report similar feelings.
