I am blown away at how many people are applauding Greta Thunberg for D-shaming Andrew Tate.

The comments on that article... aren't great

[–]UnHope20[S] 49 points50 points51 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I will admit that I am impressed to see a progressive writing for a mainstream news source describe the relationship between the Left and Men's issues so well.

It is from 2019 but it gives me hope. 😌

[–]OkLieThen 9 points10 points11 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Its an opinion article nothing more. That said you are seeing more articles like this because men's issues are getting to a point of negatively hurting society and that women. And we can't have that now.

By the way look at how covid was covered and how gender neutral the coverage was. I bring this up as more men died from covid than women and covid seems to affect men more. Did the media cover this? By and large no. If it was flip the media be all over this.

De-AMPed version:

Thanks. Btw where can I go to learn how to do that? Also, do you know why there is a preference for De-AMPed here?

Here's an article on the matter, among other reasons.

[–]p_and_q 38 points39 points40 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm glad that information around men's issues is becoming more mainstream and I found the article to be informative. That being said, if I didn't care about men's issues before reading this article, I probably wouldn't care afterwards. The author chose their words too carefully and it was clear early on how hard they were trying not to offend readers. The article was all facts and no emotion and honestly if we need to get more people on board, we'll need more pleas to emotion.

Men's issues is becoming more mainstream

While this is great, it's also a double-edged sword.

Remember when feminists hated International Men's Day? "Everyday is International Men's day" they said.

But after IMD has gotten more and more mainstream throughout the years, they realize that they could use it to their advantage. Now they're attempting to hijack it to push their "fight toxic masculinity" rhetoric.

[–]funnystor 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."

The more they talk about toxic masculinity the more people realize that under the same definition, all women's problems are caused by toxic femininity.

If you really want to annoy them, every time they bring up women's issues just reply "yes toxic femininity hurts women too".

[–]ninja_deli 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I was encouraged. Then I read "But the fact that women remain victims in many ways does not negate the reality that many men are struggling and are victims of economic and cultural changes — ONES THAT ALSO OFTEN HURT WOMEN, children and society."

And there it is. Still framed from and for a female perspective.

[–]UnHope20[S] 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They're always going to make it about women, but it's a start.

[–]ColonialDagger 25 points26 points27 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

However, in our bitterly divided times, these foundational goals have been politicized: Many on the right have drawn attention to men’s problems — some thoughtfully, but more often to bash feminism and women. Many on the left are silent because they are implausibly unaware of such issues or, more likely, less willing to highlight them because doing so would be deemed politically incorrect. T

Fucking ding ding ding. Why do you think so many men's issues communities are overwhelmingly conservative, making it so easy to fall into the toxic red pill groups or, even worse, alt-right groups? It's because they are the only groups willing to acknowledge the feelings that a lot of people, particularly men, experience. The left refuses to acknowledge that men have issues and the right hates social change so they'll use any excuse they can to bash social movements.

Men's groups are not without their problems, and neither is feminism, but we need both if we want to have an honest discussion on gender equality.

Women's groups, yes, of course. But feminism? Do we need the KKK if we want to have an honest discussion on racial equality?

[–]Langland88 15 points16 points17 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The left refuses to acknowledge that men have issues and the right hates social change so they'll use any excuse they can to bash social movements.

Well, it's not that exactly. The left acknowledges that men have issues but then it gets dismissed immediately with rhetoric like "patriarchy" "toxic masculinity" and that the whole world historically as well as today has been built to cater men especially white men.

[–]ColonialDagger 14 points15 points16 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yup.

If you, as a man, have issues, deal with them because either it's somehow your fault anyways or because your ancestors that you've never met were less oppressed than my ancestors I've never met, so your problems today don't matter despite the fact that you don't even agree with what your ancestors and my ancestors did in the society they both participated in.

[–]UnHope20[S] 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Great points. I've tried to tell my friends these things but they don't seem to get it.

EDIT: It's really frustrating for me.

[–]OkLieThen 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's because they are the only groups willing to acknowledge the feelings that a lot of people, particularly men, experience.

Was going to say pander to them but ya.

The left refuses to acknowledge that men have issues and the right hates social change so they'll use any excuse they can to bash social movements.

the left also shits on men and wonders why Trump won and why men aren't flocking to the left. Mind you there's been numerous articles talking about how the democrats being ignoring men and that more so working class men but do nothing to even pander to them.

[–]Mustbeaight 16 points17 points18 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Lol the Washington post let that up? I’m surprised

[–]Tmomp 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's how serious men's suffering is, and seriously ignored.

[–]a-man-from-earthleft-wing male advocate 24 points25 points26 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Could you avoid using amp links next time?

[–]Itasenalm 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

May I ask why amp is bad? I personally don’t like it because it doesn’t play well with my browser when I’m searching google, but I’ve always made sure to share the actual source because I’ve seen that people want that instead. I’m just curious as to why.

Thank you very much for sharing. That’s good information to have.

[+]NotherThrowaway28416 points 5 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Google uses it to track online activity and to increase its control over how content creation and monetization occur. Anyone who thinks they're doing this to be nice is smoking hash.

One upside to AMP, though, is pages load faster in it and there often are fewer visible ads on pages (I mean, some people do still see ads on the internet, right?).

[–]Itasenalm 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Gotcha, thank you very much.

[–]psilorder 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Twice as many men than women are hardcore gamers.

Not sure what this was supposed to mean, bracketed as it was by problems men have. Is he saying that being a hardcore gamer is a problem? Or a symptom of a problem? Why does it need to be either?

Otherwise a nice article.

[–]funnystor 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The assumption seems to be they're using gaming as a coping mechanism for an unsatisfying real world life.

[–]Long_Cut_7015left-wing male advocate -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

In your opinion passing 8 hours a day playing video games is not a problem ?!

[–]psilorder 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

More than doing so with anything else? no.

[–]RStonePTleft-wing male advocate 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lol. Asking conservatives and liberals didn't do much, why expect this to he any different?

[–]Tmomp 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The very phrase “men’s issues” conjures up images of bitter, angry white guys who stupidly don’t realize that they are oppressors and on top of the world. In the era of #MeToo, men don’t have problems; they are the problem.

Like Brian Banks?

Like the guys who collect your trash?

Like veterans?

[–]helloiseeyou2020 20 points21 points22 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You realize the guy doesnt actually believe that rhetoric, right? The whole purpose of writing it the way he did was to lampoon that logic.
