I hope the good people in Florida who are fighting for alimony reform do not give up on this. There is simply no excuse to require anyone, male or female, to provide lifetime financial support for another able-bodied adult.

IMHO, they made a tactical mistake when they attempted to mix child custody issues with alimony reform and tried to make changes retroactive.

We're missing the other half of this bill, it doesn't just have to do with alimony, it's also about who gets custody of the children after divorce. I think this is the more important part of the bill.

From the Miami Herald:

Simone Kay, a 22-year-old honors student at Florida State University. As a child of divorced parents, Kay said the proposed legislation hit "close to home."

"Every aspect of this bill is incredibly wrong," she said. "I'm truly concerned about the children. The 50-50 time share could put a lot of people at risk."

Put them at risk of what? Spending equal time with their father?

I think, for feminists, the worst thing about the bill is the mandatory shared parenting. Their argument is that this potentially gives abusive men the ability to use the child against the mother. I can see the point of their argument, but it ignores the fact that the current system where the mother gets default custody allows abusive women the power of using their children to continue abusing their ex-husband. People that use this abuse argument against shared parenting are either blind to anything but self interest, dont think women can abuse men, or think that men deserve it. Continued privilege of exclusive alimony rights is just icing on the cake.
