For the purposes of this post, assume that you've already maxed out your SMV through your method of choice. You are fit and you are the absolute model of a RP/BP man/woman (pick your poison). "Just improve more" isn't a viable option.

Let's say you're a 6 and you want to date an 8. It's obvious that they are way, way out of your league. So you have to settle for a fellow 6 or maybe a 7, right?

Nope.

If you want to date out of your league, find a dented can.

You can bag someone of substantially higher SMV than yourself if you're willing to make concessions in other areas. In terms of RP-speak, we'll say that you are sacrificing a few points of RMV in favor of higher SMV.

Bluntly: Find someone who has something wrong with them.

Maybe he's in a wheelchair, maybe she had an abusive childhood. Maybe he's depressed or maybe she is terrible at "being an adult" and can't manage her finances for shit. Go get 'em, tiger!

...haha, just kidding! First realize that an eye for risk management is crucial.

It's not an exact formula, but let's say the higher you go out of your league, the more deeply flawed. So if you're a 5 and want a 9... she's probably going to be bunny-boiler psycho. If a 1 wants to get with a 10... well, he's probably going to be legally braindead and in a coma.

Obviously, this strategy comes with its own challenges. Once you catch your high SMV pony, you have to figure out what to do with it. As in, how to mitigate the flaw that you've bought yourself.

Realize some flaws are easier to manage than others. A woman with deep insecurities will probably be easier to manage than a woman with BPD. A man who has depression will probably be easier to manage than a man who has an infidelity streak a mile wide.

Don't bite off more than you can chew, for fuck's sake. If you don't have an iron constitution and a rock-solid frame, don't go fucking around with the severely mentally unstable.

All right, ladies and gents: discuss. What do you think of my Dented Can theory of the SMV. Is it sound, would you use it, and is it worth it?
