I am a nurse. Nurses don't just work in retirement homes or facilities for the elderly. Most of us work in hospitals and depending on the specialty, years, of service, location ( large urban centers pay more ), demand market, education, and job classification, and the amount of OT worked the pay can be decent. My job is very high stress, I frequently miss lunch, and rarely get "breaks", deal with complex issues and scenarios, interact with people in crisis, and my particular job requires me to be the piont person for resolving issues with several non nursing departments. I do happen to work with several men.

I don't really give a fuck if RP approves or disapproves of my job, it is how the bills get paid.

no job is "underpaid", they are paid in relationship to how fungible the workers are and how populous the labor pool for them is. "care" workers are a dime a dozen and are paid as such, doctors are not. its that simple

It's supply and demand. CARE jobs could, in theory, be done by anyone, but things like STEM and ditch digging or garbage collecting are are things that many women are either unable to do or dislike the work so much that they won't do it. More people could do or are seeking CARE jobs which means employers lower the wages.

Economics determines how much one is paid for a job, not societal "value". If I can train virtually everybody who isn't mentally or physically disabled to be a nurse's assistant or LPN, and many people are willing to do these jobs, they are not going to command a high salary relative to jobs that few people have the capacity to do.

It is a shame that wages have not kept up with inflation, and middle class and below people are being squeezed. But, relatively speaking, the CARE jobs you speak of have not been hurt in proportion to others.

I would not be overly concerned with what a group comprised mostly of boys who have not yet entered the workforce deem valuable. A math major from State U might wax philosophical about STEM all day, but out of the gate his isn't necessarily going to be making more than these 20/hr jobs and his job placement might actually be harder. After that, how he applies his skills and how he interacts with others will be a better determinant of where he is in 10 years than the importance of STEM.

I'm assuming that you're essentially talking about pink collar jobs.

I can't account for other countries, but in America, the pay is fine. The market determines the value of the work, as it should.
It seems like unless it's a cozy "fulfilling" job that puts you into at least the upper middle class, it's not going to be rated pretty highly. Most blue collar jobs aren't rated very highly either.
I would imagine there would be an influx assuming they pay were adequate, and they weren't bothered by any of the social stigmas attached to those jobs.

I'm not really sure about where this is coming from. Maybe in the sense of RPers working these jobs, because the status doesn't really bode well for them unless they date coworkers.

Not aware of countries outside mine (Norway). Some care jobs are underpaid, others are pretty decently paid here.

Most women I know who chose CARE jobs in health did so partly because they have the opportunity to work part time giving them a lot of flexibility. So hours is a reason why they're chosen. You work bad hours you get excellent pay. Teachers/Kindergarden workers have tons of vacation. Kindergarden workers also never seem to work overtime.

Most of the jobs I'm aware of require a bachelor's degree. So this would be wrong in my country.

CARE jobs in Third World countries are not the same thing as nursing, providing hands-on medical/nursing/palliative/health care to patients, or other kinds of social service/education/"social justice" work in First World countries, which is what OP and I were discussing on a previous thread.

I'll tell you about my country.
Areas that are related with MEDICINE but in which people are not DOCTORS suffer a lot because doctors exert a STRONG lobby to prevent such professionals from getting legal attributions that could make them more valuable.
Poor nurses, physiotherapists and alikes. These guys only see some money working outside hospitals, where they can exist without a doctor around.
People are antipathetic towards men and masculinity in such areas though. I doubt you'd get many men in them even if you fixed it.

Anyway, I guess supply and demand ought to play a bigger role in the paychecks than gender biases for those areas.

Pay is based on the demand and supply of the labor market. They are paid appropriately, the market corrects itself.

Sure. It does not require the same level of knowledge and skills that doctors, lawyers, engineers, and physicists require.

Part of why there are more people in care jobs and why they're less well paid, lower skill requirement and higher market supply.

I doubt it. Some more would sure, but most men rather build or solve technical problems than care for people or be nurturing.
