Their potential response:

We are fun! or hi!

Then I do an assumption or ask a question based on an initial glance of their looks, the environment, and their enthusiasm from their response:

You look like you’re in some crazy deep thought right now about your weekend plans/So my friends and I have a debate about so and so question...

Walk up to the Hb or group. Then in a raised voice with a tone of breaking rapport say.

"Hey girls/You girls look fucking hot tonight, I figured I’d come say hi before 10 guys line up to buy you drinks."

Hb. Lol Blah blah blah

"But now I'm thinking I should’ve waited a bit, I’ll seem way more charming when you’re drunk."

That will get you some shit tests and lots of IOI for being man to woman on the opener. Report back on how you handle it.

I'm glad you made the distinction.

I hate it when people talk about openers and there's always a handful of smug posters who are like ''just say hi'', as if that by itself will cut much ice or help anyone at all lol. 'Hi' is just a 'pre-opener', tbh

Anyway, personally I tend to comment on something about them. Usually I use a clothing item. It's pretty hit and miss, though. And of course, in the rare event that a situational opener offers itself to me (like some drunk guy falling over next to her or something) then i'll use that instead

Richard Ruina speaks directly to club game, pointing out that non-verbal interactions are key. He gets into how to use non-verbal interactions to get a feel for the people in the room.

This is really essential because trying to start verbal interactions will often constitute an interruption to the fun and it's also really inefficient trying to go around talking to everyone one by one, when you can quickly get a feel for people en masse or in large groups at once.

Think this through: your conversation starter.... the words that come out of your mouth, are NOT the first step.

The first steps include observation and all the non-verbal interactions that occur before those first words come out.

Basic observations
- a.) What are they doing or talking about?
- b.) What emotions are on their face?
- c.) Non-verbal interactions
  - Facial expressions
  - Gestures
  - Eye contact
  - Overall body language

And here's the thing: if you're handling your observation well enough, your conversation starter drops in your damn lap. This idea is depicted quite well in Gosling's opener/conversation starter in Crazy, Stupid Love. It's fictional, but shows the very real idea of plucking something you've observed to open people with, has HUGE fucking advantages:

You'll often have an idea of how open people are to interacting in the first place, based on non-verbal things they're doing.
You're essentially stepping directly into the interaction that's already underway, which is like travelling with the flow of traffic instead of trying to redirect and sell them on accepting the interruption and redirection.
You're taking something of interest to them (the experience they're currently having) and using that as fodder for conversation.
Your opener? Life just gave it to you. All you had to do was observe it by paying attention to very basic, superficial level, Captain Obvious stuff, and then repeat what you saw or heard. So there's no complicated process of running through your prepared openers and trying to figure out which one would work best.
The conversation starter/opener dovetails directly into conversation, and if you continue to actively listen/observe what people say after the opener, they will feed you conversation content to keep it going.

I'll also point out that a number of openers I see people dropping in the thread, could be easily personalized via observation, to make them better in different situations you may find yourself in.

For example, “So what are you up to?” would be even better if you took into account what you observe: if you're paying attention, you SHOULD have some idea what they're up to, so you can skip ahead a bit and comment directly on what they are doing.

My go to opener, is saying something on the lines of: "my friends dared me to go up to the prettiest girl here, and buy her a drink. Can I buy you a drink?".
