This is a fairly recent phenomenon, brought about by mainstream (not radical — mainstream) feminism spreading rape hysteria throughout the populace. Any male unaccompanied by a woman is to be viewed as a potential sex offender.

This extends to men who pursue careers as daycare workers, massage therapists, teachers, youth outreach workers (such as Big Brothers), and so on.

The demonization of men as a gender is in full bloom.

Never mind that stranger-type rapists and pedophiles are incredibly rare (most abuse people they know). Never mind that some women will kidnap children to raise as their own — including ripping a fetus from another pregnant woman's womb in rare cases. Never mind that women are more likely to abuse their own children than are men, and that female teachers now regularly make the news for committing statutory rape against underage male students (and receive light sentences, of course).

I don't have much to add to this discussion, but I can at least say this much... I'm a 23 year old male and I love kids... My "red pill" moment was definitely the first time I found myself saying that to someone "oh, yeah! I love kids!" and had to check myself in my own head "wait... is it cool for me to say this? Do I sound like a total pedophile?" I really like kids and have volunteered coaching youth basketball and football and umpired youth baseball because I think I can make a positive impact, but when it gets to a point where I feel like my motives are being called into question or I can't say phrases as simple as "I like kids a lot" or "I love kids" without having to second guess myself? I don't know... It feels wrong. I'm not a pedophile, not in the least... I just remember how cool I thought people my age were when I was a little kid and how stoked I was whenever "older kids" or young adults gave me the time of day, I just want to help out. I can't wait to have kids of my own, I just... I am sick of feeling like a creep even though I know my intentions are good.

Not to cause any strife, but you did mention that normally its mothers and older ladies that ride the train. It's still very rude of them but, people,of all genders, tend to fear anyone out of the ordinary. I tend to get looks like you received when I'm out and about. I'm large and I have messy hair and a beard so people that don't know me tend to be weary. When I'm at work in my uniform, however, no one looks twice. Again, what they did was rude and only serves to further the problems between genders but, they have years of ingrained mistrust that has been drilled into their heads.

Devil's Advocate: Have you considered the possibility that you're not as discreet in your observation of these innocent travelers as you think?

Are you frequently looking at them to see how they're reacting to you? I can maintain a reasonable proximity to the birds in my back yard, however if I keep looking at them, making eye contact and whatnot then they get more skittish. Now birds are stupid, I'd like to think your average mother would be more in-tune to a guy acting flakey than a pigeon that I just gave some bread to.

I'm just saying maybe you should stop looking so much at people on public transport. Few people like random social interaction on public transport, personally I think it's necessary for the sane functioning of our society to make trains and buses a sacred place where we can maintain some semblance of solitude. Where we can tolerate being in a sardine can going at 50kmph so long as we don't start staring at each other.
