His article is here:
http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/intelligence-report/browse-all-issues/2012/spring/myths-of-the-manosphere-lying-about-women
You might have read it already. If so, you probably noticed how the article is full of lies, half-truths, and true but irrelevant statements that he tries to mislead readers with.
I sent this email to him on March 9. As of yet, there is no reply. TLDR at bottom.
I was very disappointed and disturbed to see not only extreme bias, but even worse, the shoddy scholarship and even outright dishonesty in the article.
Your article starts off with:
"Misogynists in the men’s and fathers’ rights movements..."
which implies that the men's rights and father's rights movement is made of misogynists. I need hardly point out the ideological bias therein.
But the real problem is your selective citing and twisting of evidence to make your claims. For instance:
"Men’s rights activists often insist that men are victimized by sex crimes and abuse just as much as women are, if not more. This assertion is meant to support their contention that the courts and laws outrageously favor women."
First of all, it is demonstrably true that the courts and laws favour women. There is ample proof of a sentencing bias against men (and ethnic minorities); that is, men get longer sentences for the same crime as women, after controlling for factors such as previous criminal record, etc.
http://www.terry.uga.edu/~mustard/sentencing.pdf (simply read the abstract at the beginning)
Second, you cite the 2010 CDC study. As it happens, I am quite familiar with that study and immediately noticed your dishonest citing of it. Link to the study:
http://www.cdc.gov/ViolencePrevention/pdf/NISVS_Report2010-a.pdf
You claim: "Nearly one in five American women (18.3%), the study found, have been raped; the comparable number for men is one in 71 (1.4%)"
Though the CDC claims this in the executive summary, actually reading the study shows that this claim is false. In fact, the study finds that over the past 12 months, male and female respondents reported equal amounts of rape.
On page 18: 1.1% of women reported being raped in the last 12 months - note that this includes attempted penetration.
On page 19, 1.1% of men reported being "made to penetrate" in the last 12 months. "Made to penetrate" for men was defined as being forced to penetrate a woman's vagina, or the mouth or anus of either gender. For instance, if a man was unconscious and unable to consent, or if he verbally expressed non-consent, but the woman straddled him anyway.
Although the CDC did not classify this as rape, no reasonable individual can claim that it is not. Over 79% of men who were made to penetrate reported female perpetrators only, although that is not relevant to your original claim, which was simply whether "men and women are equally victimized by sex crimes."
So in other words, over the last 12 months, the CDC found an EQUAL RATE of victimization. The lifetime statistics (also on page 18 and 19) found different numbers: 18.3% of women reported being raped, and 6.2% of men (after adding in being made to penetrate, for men). The difference between the 12 month figure and the lifetime figure is partially explained by false negatives:
Researchers into the field of traumatic memory recovery note that the longer the period of time a person is asked recall a traumatic event, the less likely they are to remember it. How this works is that surveys that ask about a traumatic event in the last six months get less false negatives than those that ask about a traumatic event in the last twelve months which, itself, gets considerably fewer false negatives than lifetime prevalence. For men this effect is even more pronounced."
>16% of men with documented cases of sexual abuse considered their early childhood experiences sexual abuse, compared with 64% of women with documented cases of sexual abuse. These gender differences may reflect inadequate measurement techniques or an unwillingness on the part of men to disclose this information (Widom and Morris 1997).
Widom C. S. and Morris S., Accuracy of Adult Recollections of Childhood Victimization: Part 2. Childhood Sexual Abuse, Psychological Assessment, Vol. 9, No. l, 34-46, 1997
As for the rest of your paragraph in the first claim, I was further disappointed to see a series of statements that, upon reading, are actually unrelated to the topic of "are men or women more victimized by sex crimes" and simply designed to sway the reader on emotional grounds.
Your second claim:
"In another effort to show that men are discriminated against, many men’s rights activists assert that women attack men just as much as men attack women, if not more....Men’s rights groups often cite the work of Deborah Capaldi, a researcher with the Oregon Learning Center, to back their claim."
First of all, I have not see a single person cite Deborah Capaldi, nor have I heard of her. In reality, men's rights group cite a collection of literally hundreds of scholarly studies that show gender parity in domestic violence:
http://www.csulb.edu/~mfiebert/assault.htm
Some choice excerpts:
"Whitaker, D. J., Haileyesus, T., Swahn, M., & Saltzman, L. S. (2007). Differences in frequency of violence and reported injury between relationships with reciprocal and nonreciprocal intimate partner violence. American Journal of Public Health, 97, 941-947...almost 24% of all relationships had some physical violence and that half the violence was reciprocal. In non-reciprocally violent relationships, women were the perpetrators 70% of the time."
" Headey, B., Scott, D., & de Vaus, D. (1999). Domestic violence in Australia: Are women and men equally violent? Data from the International Social Science Survey/ Australia 1996/97 was examined....women inflict serious injuries at least as frequently as men. For example 1.8% of men and 1.2% of women reported that their injuries required first aid, while 1.5% of men and 1.1% of women reported that their injuries needed treatment by a doctor or nurse."
You then go on to say:
"In fact, the 2000 Department of Justice study found that violence against both women and men is predominantly male violence. Nine in 10 women (91.9%) who were physically assaulted since the age of 18 were attacked by a male, while about one in seven male assault victims (14.2%) were victimized by females."
This statement is irrelevant to whether or not "is domestic violence committed more by men than women, or is it equally committed by both genders." It is also irrelevant to what you said originally, which was "is it true that women attack men in equal rates as men attacking women."
This is because the proportion of male assault victims that were attacked by women has nothing to do with whether or not women attack men more.
Suppose there are 99 cases of men attacking other men, 1 case of a man attacking a woman, and 1 case of a woman attacking a man. That means the vast majority of male victims were attacked by men, yet at the same time men are attacking women at the same rate as a woman attacking a man.
I would like to see some of this shoddy writing and scholarship addressed.
TLDR:
His first claim relies on dishonest citing of the CDC study and relies on classifying women raping men as not rape.
His second claim relies entirely on logical fallacies (the percentage of male assault victims attacked by men is unrelated to whether men attacking women is more common, equal, or less common to women attacking men), and ignores the literally hundreds of studies that show domestic violence parity.
