Both. They use the most biased and sexist version of critical theory feminism that they can, in order to marginalize anybody that doesn't agree with them, or use terminology that they don't like. Any female specific word is considered as "oppressive" as are any views championing the cause of men's rights, as they arbitrarily assign men "privileged" status and therefore impossible to oppress, despite any statistics to the contrary.

Sound convoluted enough for you? It is. There is one sock puppet account that belongs to one of the moderators that does nothing but quote mine and slander well intentioned people, branding them as racists, misogynists, and bigots based on nothing but poorly quote mined statements.

No views but their's are welcome, and the removed comments list is extensive. It is the most authoritarian subreddit in existence, and an utter mockery of anarchism and egalitarianism.

I like to watch as they eat themselves...it's like a sitcom, only I hate most of the main characters and only watch for the times that they hurt themselves. Anyway, I think it's neither. Everyone has the potential to be oppressive/authoritarian/etc., it's just human nature. Now, you have these anarchist-kiddies who read about how bad oppression/authoritarianism is all the time, but it's all on the outside, you know? They see it in others, but they assume it's not in them...so they don't do anything to try to prevent it. So it come out, and they're completely unaware of the fact that they're being oppressive/authoritarian/etc.

I figured some of you might enjoy a good backstory, so here you go.

This should be approximately right. I started following the drama, because some insane person named "supersheep" posted some psychotic shit in another subreddit, argued with me, etc., and I saw they came from r/anarchism (honestly, I think that's what they were trying to do). I'm writing based on memory, I only followed the story passively, and a lot of this is from like a year ago (maybe more)...so I may fuck some things up, but here's basically what happened:

Once upon a time, r/anarchism was like any other subreddit. They had their problems, but no more than any other sub. They needed a mod for spam/etc. and they had veganbikepunk, the creator of the sub...and from what I had seen, he was basically a fair mod, who let people speak their minds. Some of the people from r/anarchocommunism engaged in a campaign of intimidation and harassment against him. I think they either believed he supported bigotry, or that he wasn't making them feel "safe" in r/anarchism...whatever. Anyway, they couched the whole thing in an argument that r/anarchism should reflect the principles of anarchism...so they had elections for mods. The loudest voices against VBP won (if memory serves, I think they ignored a bunch of votes and nominations from people whom they decided weren't "anarchist" enough, and some of the people nominating, etc., may have been sockpuppets of the r/ancom assholes, etc.)...so some members of the current inner circle took power.

Around the same time, people like queercoup went out and declared war on r/MR and effectively invited people to come troll in r/anarchism. I believe this was a way to show people that trolling was a big problem that VBP wasn't handling, etc., and show that r/anarchism needed new moderators. So, these new mods, insisting that they had a mandate from "true anarchists", went on a psychotic banning/censoring spree. The subscribers of r/@ went nuts and got a few of them de-modded...but only the most insane lost their power (and honestly, I think some of them were sockpuppets of other mods...they engaged in a LOT of that shit). The mods got tired of constantly being criticized in r/anarchism, so they created a new, private subreddit called r/metanarchism...where all "true anarchists" could come and express their distaste, etc., and where "true anarchists" could discuss who should be banned, etc. It was a private subreddit, and the mods needed to approve you to even see what went on in there. Effectively, this kept out those the mods didn't like, and any time someone discussed r/anarchism IN r/anarchism, their post would be deleted, and they would be instructed to post in r/met@ (assuming they could get approval from those they were usually criticizing).

This didn't go over well, and so a mass-migration began. Well, the mods didn't want to lose their power, so they quickly opened up r/met@. Apparently that was enough for their readers. Anyway, things died down a bit. There was some other stupid drama...like some mod re-modding a crazy person, everyone freaking out trying to discover who it was, queercoup being demodded, remodded, demodded, etc., some mod complaining about the other mods...the other mods decided that mod's account was hacked (despite any evidence aside from the complaining), etc. It got boring, so I stopped paying much attention.

I checked in from time to time, and watched them clamp down more, and more, and more on any speech they didn't like. Occasionally there would be a mini user-uprising...and they'd usually be ignored, but if they were particularly damning, they'd be censored quickly (it's important to check the spam/deleted stuff page), or, rarely, a mod would step down. Many users started to get pissed about it, and started mocking the mods, or the AOP, etc. openly. The mods deemed them all "MRA Trolls", even though A) most of us have written off r/anarchism as a lost cause, just like we had written off r/feminisms, and B) many times, it had absolutely nothing to do with men...or women...or anything like that, they were just criticizing the mods/AOP.

Recently, more people started complaining about the moderators/etc. In a bigger way. You'd see more confrontation between the plebs and their leaders. The leaders accused the dissidents of being MRA trolls, as usual, but it didn't work as well this time. Instead, people began to complain that the mods were using that as a fear-tactic/etc. So, mysteriously, r/againstmensrights was created by an r/anarchism user (who I believe may have been a sockpuppet of dbzer0). Many of the more psychotic mods from r/anarchism were made mods on that sub...and they began to start shit with us...again. So, I started paying closer attention and, once again, people are getting really pissed at the mods. I'm sure some are coming from r/MR...stoking the fire and all of that out of a sense of revenge, etc., but it legitimately seems to be actual r/anarchism users. Some mods, in particular, are starting to crack under this pressure..

Now, it's gotten so bad, that the main subs are starting to pay attention:

TL;DR: Basically, the people who like to cite Chomsky, use the shit he outlines in his books, to become the thing they claim to oppose. It's all very Orwellian...and it's a better story than most of the shit on TV.

I think that describes it about perfectly. I know enough about anarchism and am somewhat sympathetic but I can't think of a single anarchist organization which has escaped this problem.

The problem is that leadership is required to do ... anything. But without a formal leadership structure, as in a government, there are no built-in checks to prevent unaccountable leaders from taking over. When the president's term is up, he HAS to leave or he will be sent to jail. But anarchists have no jails or term limits. There are no leaders (in theory).

Now, the way Reddit is structured you can clearly see who the leaders are: the moderators. Most anarchist organizations, however, are rarely ever so clear. Instead you have de facto leaders who are there to safeguard the purity of the non-hierarchical system. They're not formally the boss, and no one is allowed to acknowledge that they are the boss, but they are in fact the boss -- and totally unaccountable.
