I can relate to some extent being a former male elementary school teacher, though I assume being an RN is more difficult for a male because you are dealing with someone's health, and as a result, their body.

Everyone told me when I graduated that "schools will line up to hire male elementary school teachers like you," but the reality was schools are afraid of us because parents are afraid of us and ultimately schools are afraid of parents now.

Things like hugging a crying eight year old, walking a kid home who's ride forgot to pick him up, or meeting with a kid after school to help him catch up on a math concept all make you look just as much like a perv as they do a good teacher, and I felt it was only a matter of time before I would be wrongly accused of something by someone and it wasn't worth it anymore.

I worked at a summer camp when I was 16, the kids loved me. So parents would ask the group leader for the counselor's phone number to call them to babysitting. I don't know how many times I heard my group leader say that I was really good with the kids but the parents would just say they didn't want a guy babysitting their kids. I loved those little bastards.

I'm going to start training as a male nurse in February next year and i have been warned by the female staff at the university that my gender and age may be an issue with the patients under my care.

People will either think that a male nurse is wrong or not normal so they may refuse my care. I can deal with blood, fear, death and i can help people at the worst time in their life - The only thing i'm not ready for is the stigma that comes from a heterosexual male being in a female dominated profession.

Some elderly patients may see me and compare me to their grandchildren and not want me because of that (??). This is can sort of understand but it's a bit of a weak excuse and i don't think it will happen very often

The supervisor should've said, "No, I don't 'know how men are'. Would you care to explain what this man has done wrong while caring for your child?"

And then after that, if she was still being a bitch about it, punch her right in her nose and run away.

I had to work in the nursery for awhile at one of my former hospitals years ago while I was on light duty for a back injury. There was one female MD who felt that "men didn't belong in the nursery"

Of course, I was very hard working, and my coworkers, the other doctors, the patients and families loved me! I never judged, treated everyone faily & equally, and most importantly, I listed to the mother's better than my co-workers. I never once tried to compare their labor pains to my own, because I had no way of experiencing it first hand!

Labor stories for women are like Fish stories for men - always trying to outdo one another!

Wife works in a preschool. She told me one day that a pair of lesbians were bringing their daughter to the school as a new "student".

The second day in, one of the mothers asks my wife "Does he work here?", pointing to a man that has worked there for years, the only male teacher, and his own child goes there as well. According to my wife, her tone was that she was ready to call the police immediately.

My experience as an adult male that likes kids finds it very sad that I can not interact with them worry free. I wonder what this is doing to children in the long term.

I was shocked that this discussion with several health professionals expressing opinions it took so long for anyone to mention the possibility of abuse. I'd like to believe that people with extreme reactions have a reason for their behavior. The woman may have been a victim of abuse herself or intimately familiar with an abuse case. I'm not sure that a male can explore this avenue but another female might be able to learn more in some cases.

I wonder how much damage this idea ( men = molesters ) does to all parties in our society.

I am a medical student, and yesterday, someone on the ward to which I was attached, died. The male nurse on the ward was the one who dealt with the patient's family, and I can confidently say that he did it much better and more compassionately than I have seen female nurses break bad news to patients' families.

If I ever had kids (I'm female), I wouldn't care who cared for my child - as long as the care was of good quality. Don't people realise that if you are in the medical profession - even cleaning bedpans - you have to have an intensive criminal record check? This lady is ridiculous, and please tell your husband to keep up the good work!

This deeply concerns me as I am in a nursing program. I get a lot of conflicting information form my instructors (all female) about the way rookie males are treated by male docs, patients, and especially other nurses.

IAmA a male nurse and luckily haven't come across similar behavior.

Sometimes I meet a female patient who thinks male nurses are worth shit/cannot see their poontang but afterwards they want only male nurses.

At the moment I work in a geriatric ward treating dementia patients where elderly women love male nurses.

Sounds to me like she's the one with a filthy, awful mind if she saw a professional changing a diaper on a baby girl and her first thought was how it could be sexual.

My dad has been a stay-at-home dad since my sister was born (early 80's). My mother was informed several times, by almost everyone she knew, that she should randomly check on him because a man who wanted to stay home with his daughter only did it because he was a child molester.
