What an extremely rude question. What if the person in question had happened to be unemployed at that time? I would have taken that opportunity to complain: management may have been able to excuse the guard's harassment of male customers on the grounds that all men are filthy pigs, but surely they can't let their staff get away with blatantly insulting customers to their face.

I can relate to this story. I was buying underwear for a friend of mine who is extremely sensitive to volatile organic compounds, and I was checking the different brands to see which ones had the mildest odor from the various solvents and detergents and whatnot used in the production process. Anyways, long story short, I'm not allowed in baby Gap any more. I thought this was America.

Ugh, I hate this. I'm 17 but my little sister is 4. I often see her doing the cutest things, and go to grab the camera and take a picture, but then think: "What if my stepmom (her mom) comes in and thinks I'm being creepy?". So I usually just try and commit her cuteness in that particular moment to memory and get along with my day. It really sucks because given how much older I am, I've helped raise her so far, and I hate to not be able to capture those moments, which may never happen again given how quickly kids change. =(

Guys, please continue to shop for your daughters and nieces and grandkids, etc. Don't be scared off by creepers whose brains rush to thoughts of pedophilia by default.

I would hope that most people would see a man with some kid underwear in a basket and think his poor kid wet herself and needs an emergency pair or something. I mean, that's if they even for some reason actually notice him and then look at his purchases... But some people are nosy as hell, apparently.

Here's something I've always wondered.

It's considered kinda wierd for a man to be in womans clothes section alone (I know it's not THAT wierd but when I was a teenager trying to buy some new jeans wondering into womans clothing alone always drew stares), but not for woman to me in men's clothing section alone, so then why is womans clothing always the first section in the door? and why is lingerie always and I mean ALWAYS put between the two?

A friend of mine is a comedian and he has a whole section of his act dedicated to the wierd looks he gets bringing his little sister to the park.

Female here. When I was 6, my parents split up. There was no child support payments to my mom, the deal was I saw my dad once a week, and we went shopping. He bought me all of my school stuff, and clothes. Which obviously included undies. I was always with him while shopping, but he'd always feel so awkward with me, he'd usually give me his debit card and walk away. As a kid, I didn't get it. But now I do, and it's seriously messed up. If a mom can take her son boxer shopping, or be able to buy them alone for him, then it should go both ways.

FUCK ALL OF YOU who have this shitty "he's a rent-a-cop therefore he must be a stupid piece of shit" attitude. It's ridiculous that we are sitting here discussing the sterotype of men, but none of you are noticing this disgusting double standard. I understand the mall cops give you shit when you are hanging out with your buddies at the food court, but keep that shit off Reddit, and specifically out of mensrights. Statistically 10% or more of you are unemployed so again, you can fuck right off. My brother is a "rent-a-cop" who provides for his family and he is one of the hardest workers I have ever known.

That said, this story is very painful to read. I feel those same accusing eyes almost everytime I go clothes shopping with my wife and I find myself seperated from her. My own thinking has been affected as well. The other day I was browsing photos of my niece (4yo) on facebook and there were a few with her running around in her panties. I immediately thought, man my brother could get in trouble for these...until I realized the ridiculousness of what I just thought.

Then I realized it wasn't that ridiculous. =(

Edit: Another sad thing is the writer felt he needed to explain why he was shopping for 3 paragraphs, as if he was worried even his readers would suspect his motives. This shit is ingrained deep into our thoughts.

What a ridiculous guard. I can think of several reasons a father may be shopping for his childrens' needs in the middle of the day - lunch break, night shifts, he's a student, a stay-at home dad, works weekends, has a day/afternoon off, etc.

Just like a mother might.

It's called parenting.

Do what I do... sometimes I have to buy undergarments for my daughters and I ask a clerk and give them the sizes. Let them deal with it... look confused, then they will realize you aren't a pervert but a parent who got stuck with a nasty chore.

unfortunately, this isn't the only type of stereotyping that goes on in stores. I mean, Asians are known as the thrift shopper that go straight to the sale racks, blacks and latin@s are known as the cleptos and whites well, they're perfect, right? The stereotypes that our society has built within the subconscious of our people is so ridiculous. The hate that we're implicitly teaching our children causes so much unneeded friction.

Not to sound like a hippy but why is teaching people to love, to be empathetic, and to be caring such a bad thing?

By you use of "mum", I assume you are not in the USA. In nearly all of the US, no one would look twice at you. Pervert or not, money is king. If you are a paying customer, they don't give a shit who you are. Now if it looked like you are a shop lifter, they will pull out the stops. Again, money.
