And that makes sense. I generally think that the name decisions are relationship dependant. Some people who have been abandoned, by their "family", may not be interested in taking on their lastname.
I may keep my last name, but I'm planning on using my partners last name for our kids. He was an only grandchild for his grandparents (his father isn't family). He would like to continue his last name, just for them. I respect that.
I like my last name, but I don't have a personal reason on why I need to keep it. As someone whose started to build a career with their name, it can be hard to switch everything over. I'm a bit luckier, as I don't have a common first name. But being in a predominantly male career, I don't necessarily want to take my chances.

Interesting tidbit: in Japan, this is not the case. Japan will not legally recognize a marriage unless the husband and wife (no gay marriage either) share a last name. Western countries have been pushing them to amend this law, but Japan refuses to.
Across the sea in China and Taiwan, however, it is the customary tradition for the wife to not change her name. Since the single-child policy was abandoned in China in 2016, there has also been an increasing trend for Chinese families to pass on both surnames via their children, with the older sibling usually inheriting the father's surname and the younger sibling usually inheriting the mother's surname.

That's weird, I never assumed that, my mom took my dad's last name and maybe that's why I was aware? I also grew up with a lot of women that kept their last name professionally, so there was a reason for it.
That being said, I get super frustrated when women who don't take their husbands last name freak out if they get called Mrs. Husband for whatever reason. Like, bitch, I'm a dude and my (ex) girlfriend would make all the hotel reservations, I went by Mr. X more times than I can count and I wasn't even married, nor was I in any way intending, wanting, or would have taken her last name. I just make life easier for everyone and it's not a big deal, it's a hotel and I'll never see you again, if I can make your life easier and I understand what you are saying then it's all good.

So, academia is weird in this way, and the Dr. title is used a lot more as a way to differentiate between professionals and students. In any industry it's rarely used.
My dad is an MD, and while I don't feel like an imposter being referred to as Dr., as you said, I earned it, it was a lot of work, more than med school, which is basically just a trade school, I do think PhDs should kind of think about where and when they are using their Dr. title, and I guess it kinda sucks, but I think the reason is valid.
Anyways, the people I'm complaining about are the ones that will book flights, hotels, and everything and register it under the "dr." title. Which, while not really incorrect, can be deceiving, especially on flights, where they will have a log of passengers. Now, say you are flying to a conference to talk about your most recent paper because you have a PhD in art history. Yes, you are in your professional Dr. capacity, but what if there is a medical emergency and, like in the movie airplane!, which is based on real life, they need to see if there is a Doctor on board. They search the logs and they find you. They are like , Dr. X, quick, a passenger is having a heart attack, we need help. Well, Dr. X has to politely decline and say "Oh, I'm sorry, my doctorate is in art history".
People die on planes all the time, having a doctor can be lifesaving, and has. Most people are going to associate "doctor" with a medical doctor, who is really a physician, but english nomenclature, blah blah, it's just unhelpful and it could cost a life. Same with hotels, though if you are a PhD going for a conference it gets kinda weird and egocentric.
Well if you look into it the word 'doctor' actually originated from latin term 'docere' meaning 'to teach'. Which was actually an academic title for someone who has a doctorate. Calling a physician a doctor is a misnomer until and unless they have an MD or such. So IDK what you're on about regarding a hypothetical situation that might or might not happen.

Traditionally in a 'nuclear' family, the mother would take the father(husbands) name when married. Children would usually take fathers surname. So, if the wife didn't take the husband name, or hyphenated the children would still have fathers surname. Children born out of wedlock will more commonly be named after the mother if the father will not be in the picture.
Comment assume that she only suggests this, because he doesn't even know the father - much less have the father in the children's life.
Though, I do not think there are any real rules/laws pertaining to this.

That's something I'm not sure of. I'd have to ask my buddy since he's got a compounded last name, but I would assume the child might pick one and compound that one with their partner's. Most married couples do share a last name though so it usually isn't a problem.
I think I did know somebody with a three part last name though, so maybe some people do just keep piling on the letters.
