So I was just thinking how this phrase can be a gaslight both in romantic and corporate settings.
It’s often used when you call out disrespect and is actually both a distraction from the issue at hand and a combination of several different diversionary negs projecting the problem back onto you:
- You just can’t be pleased/ nothing pleases you. Accusatory. Suggests you’re ungrateful/ selfish and will never be happy because you’re a gold digger/ bitch who wants too much/ never stops demanding more
- You don’t love yourself/ know how to be happy in life in general owing to “personal” issues. Close cousin to men you catch cheating who will claim you have self esteem issues and need to go “love yourself”. Notice how this also uses a tricky fallacy of arguments? They’ve taken the fact that you’re rightfully unhappy in the moment and purposely, cleverly expanded it, without any basis to say youre not happy in the relationship in general or happy in life at all. They hope you and others don’t notice or question that baseless leap of logic and continue to buy it/ just go along with it to their manipulative ends. This variation of you don’t love yourself/ aren’t happy with yourself is a common gaslight when a woman expresses anything as not meeting her standards. You make into almost her having emotional problems or esteem issues, and just being kinda fucked in the head. I never see it used on men.
- Look at all I do for her and she’s not happy?? A cry of self victimization and DARVO, reversing victim and oppressor. Now you’re the villain for making them feel bad, daring yo make them feel this way when they’ve worked their finger to the bone for you- not them for the disrespectful thing they did
- On top of this the phrase can be used to express faux concern for your mental state, a fake concern troll that’s than used as a diversionary tactic from apologizing for the disrespectful behavior you’ve just called out. The topics been changed to monitoring and judging your emotional response, not their bad behavior that’s prompted it
- Huh??? The phrase can also be used to pretend to gloss right over the disrespect like they don’t understand what you’re calling out. Just that you’re “randomly” upset. We all know how men often love to play dumb or deaf pretending they literally don’t hear or understand things that are said to hold them accountable. “You’re not happy??!” said in a sad faux confused tone of shock can also be weaponized as a form of strategic simplemindedness/ mental incompetence as well
I had a boss who was one of the most intelligent people I’ve ever dealt with. Also one of the most shrewdly manipulative. I brought to him an issue of harassment by another coworker and ran down a long list of completely unacceptable things they were doing. Instead of saying how to end the behavior or that it was wrong the first words out of his mouth were always a quizzical, cocked head- You’re not happy??? Like my upset was the problem instead of the actual issues that had just been so fully and damningly laid out. And like my upset in the face of all those abuses which would make anyone angry or bothered was quizzical or deeply difficult to understand.
It was a way to play dumb and willfully ignore the just mentioned wrong staring us in the face. More than that it was a ploy to make me the problem.
Note the language. Youre not happy??! Who is the subject of the sentence?? YOU are now, not the issue you were originally discussing. They just switched it up on you. You and your feelings are now the problem. Not the things that prompted them and no effort is being made to fix the real underlying issue and first cause.
I was just thinking about how depending on how it’s used this phrase carries subtly shady implications and connections to so many different closely related negs. Like sits at a perfect cross section/ intersection of some of the most common ugly negs hurled at women in arguments while masquerading as simple concern
It’s a very tricky one and I was thinking how subtly people have attempted to use this against me in the past. Be wary if you see it cropping up in your relationships
