When you really find happiness in love is when you find someone who doesn’t need you, but wants you. And it should be reciprocal. Neither me or my gf “need” each other for anything but we want each other and it’s easily the healthiest, most fulfilling relationship I’ve ever been in.

I hear men lamenting about how women no longer need men and I can’t help but wonder if it’s really that hard to put in the effort to be wanted and desirable outside of necessity.

We are social animals, so people need other people. I don't think anyone needs someone of a particular sex or gender though.

nobody needs a romantic or sexual relationship of any kind. they're lovely things that most people enjoy having when they have them, but no, they are not required for happiness.

humans need a broad social network to help each other, but it is unhealthy to view individual relationships through a lens of need. women should not need men, individually. men should not need women, individually. i feel the desire to have many people of different genders in my life because i feel like that broadens my perspective, but that need isn't individual, it's about people as a whole.

(lesbians have also been making it work without men for a long time!)

I don’t think healthy relationships can form when one person NEEDS the other person. That’s were resentment and codependency grows.

So I don’t think either man or woman should need somebody, but rather set their life up in a way that their SO compliments them and they can grow from there.

In western society I don’t think anybody should truely need another unless for companionship, love, sex, starting a family, and all round happy moments ❤️

I never said that women don't work those type of jobs but there's not enough of them pertaining in those jobs to realistically say if we removed the men, they can support the infrastructure. If we removed the women, however, we could easily run the infrastructure. That's the point.

Seeing how the infrastructure is ran by men (90% plus); we're talking the technical side which require STEM field degrees and the tough laborious jobs, not only do women need men to survive, so does other men.

In my personal view, the best place to be at is when you don't need a partner to have a satisfying life. If you build your life in such a way where your community, your roles and responsibilities to yourself, your community, your friends and family etc. are inherently fulfilling- this is an extremely powerful place for both men and women. When you don't need someone, but you want someone.

I think some men see the lack of need or dependence as a sign of their obsolescence. But choosing a partner from a place of independence rather than necessity- means you can prioritize qualities like compatibility, shared values, attraction etc. rather than choosing someone because you cannot survive or meet your needs on your own/with your community.

I'd say that yes, men and women need one another. I think that's pretty obvious. We live in a time where certain developments exist that obscure that reality, and make it easier for men and women to get along separately if they so choose to. And there are groups of both men and women asserting that each sex if better off separate. I strongly disagree.

And I think this view that some RP men have, that women don't need men- comes from this really narrow idea of what entails "need". Yes, women in North America on average have the ability to live independently, to financially support themselves, to have children without a partner, etc. And for some men, they interpret women's lack of financial dependency on men as a lack of women needing men or wanting men. But it's not that men are obsolete, it's that there has been a convergence and greater degree of overlap in North America about what men and women's roles are.

There is less sex role constraint. And with that increase in opportunity and ability for people to negotiate the roles they want to play in their relationship based on their individual needs and preferences instead of their sex. This means men need to stop seeing themselves as providers. Being a provider is no longer sufficient to attract a woman (unless you have extreme wealth). I think men who have this perception that women don't need men simply because women have more opportunity, have very outdated concepts of what a masculine role needs to be. They see women who play both feminine/masculine roles and think that means women don't need them.

But just because we live in a time where it's possible to have a complete life without a romantic partner- and this goes for both men and women (less so for men if you're talking about children)- doesn't mean that it's optimal or preferable to live a life without a partner.

And to answer your more specific question "What can women gain from having a man in their life? It seems they don’t need men."- people gain a lot from having a strong social circle filled with competent, interesting, grounded, and caring people. We gain from our relationships- familial, platonic, or romantic. And that is not sex specific.

this depends on personal needs of people, if a woman wants companionship, values the other person both as a man and a individual, then yeah. personally i think it has to do more with the individual rather than gender.

Many peopler regardless of gender want a partner usually but not always of the other opposite gender. As a hole if we live in society we need each other regardless of gender. Men and women with few exceptions (give berth) can do the same things. Women and men need people not a specific gender.

Having a person you can trust to keep you accountable is more valuable than words can describe. The problem no one wants to be held accountable, so they don’t see it as a need.

“Need” is such a tricky term, because on one hand, no one needs anyone, but on the other hand—without the power guy, half the world would probably freeze.

The real question is what does someone truly want out of life. And are they actively, effectively working towards it?

That’s where the accountability helps. Having someone from a different perspective that can overcome our blindness, so that we never truly lose sight of what really matters.

Good couples empower each other. One is strong when the other is weak, and as a cohesive team, become stronger than the sum of their parts.

But uh, that’s really rare to find. But they do exist. The tricky part is recognizing that angels (among men and women) don’t often come with a pretty face.

I dont think it's a matter of need but want. I don't NEED anyone, I have money, I have the internet I can go just about anywhere. But if I WANT to be with someone I want to spend time and money and go places with them. I've traveled the world by myself and could absolutely do it again, but doubt it with someone I want to isn't so bad either.

So no. Men don't need women and women don't need men necessarily.

But if a man thinks he NEEDS a woman and a woman thinks she NEEDS a man (there is a difference between a need and a want. I need to breathe, I need to eat. I want to to Fiji again. )

If they truly feel they need, then they need possibly therapy or need to learn to love themselves more
