If we are talking signals…then I interpret yellow/orange flags as mixed signals which makes it a red flag. Like if you notice something about his energy and it’s not THAT bad (rationalization) then you deal w it as a red flag.

A yellow/orange flag is like being a little pregnant: in other words, the flag is either red or not 😅

In general, I think if you’re asking, you should just consider it a red flag and take your leave. I might consider something an orange flag if it’s an opinion expressed in ignorance and they genuinely correct themselves when informed. Your vetting abilities needs to be top notch to make that call, though.

When the traffic lights are yellow, it means that at any second it's gonna turn red.

A "yellow/orange" flag is inevitably a red flag in disguise, that seems more tame just because you haven't given it enough time. Stick around and you'll see it turning blood red.

I think they can exist for compatibility but not for value. A yellow flag for compatibility would be a trait that maybe isn’t your preference, but also isn’t objectionable to you and you’re willing to explore the relationship further. There are no “yellow flags” for how he treats you or behaves, if he treats you or others poorly or exhibits signs of LV behavior, that’s a red flag, no in between colors, no second chances, block and delete.

For an example of what I consider a yellow/orange flag, others have mentioned things that might be bigger or lesser issues due to age. Another one would be class: if you’re working class, an unemployed man is a red flag. If you’re upper class, it’s more of a yellow/orange flag as he could make a significant amount on passive income (good) or be living off a trust without a way of replenishing it (not good).

For me personally, a man who isn’t from my culture/faith, or is in business rather than a technical field, is a yellow flag and I will get more heavily for compatibility before moving forward. So “different faith than me/not religious” = yellow flag, “disrespects my religion/makes derogatory comments about religious people” = red flag.

Only time I've had a yellow flag recently was when someone misunderstood the term "momma's boy." I simply asked "How so?" and he described a positive, healthy relationship with his mother. Not the enmeshed/coddling relationship that one would think "momma's boy" means.

It's hard to tell. Look at that gradient here and tell me where yellow ends and orange starts. Then tell me where orange ends and red starts. It's hard, isn't it?

If you don't believe it's hard, do it now and mark the exact line where one color starts and the other ends. Then save and do the very same exercise one day later. I doubt the lines will be in the exact same spot.

However, there's one thing yellow, orange and red flags most assuredly are not, and that's green flags.

Red means unacceptable in all circumstances, cannot be misinterpreted, no benefit of the doubt, leave immediately.

Yellow/orange means a one off, a personal trigger that no reasonable person would suspect is bad, a true misunderstanding (language, culture, dialect) or circumstances beyond his control that no-one could have foreseen.

A cluster of orange flags is a pattern, not coincidence, and turns into a red flag.

There are times my husband and I have a cultural misunderstanding (raised by parents who grew up outside of the US) that can be initially seen as a yellow flag.

We talk it out and realize where the other was coming from. Sometimes, certain ‘things’ can have a different connotation for each of us or the like.
