Reminds me of a guy I worked with at my first real job when I was 20. Kind of a hippy type guy, he was surprised I still lived at home. Proceeded to tell me how he & his parents came home from his High School Graduation and he finds his bags all packed, with his father telling him "Welp! You're an adult now! Time to move out". So yea, basically he was kicked out, spent time at a friends' place till he could find a place to live.

Such a shitty thing to do to kids. 18 may be "legal adult", but mentally they're still a kid.

My daughter has left home at 17 and is living in share accommodation with her boyfriend. Both of them used to live with my husband, son and I. I actually took her boyfriend in when his mother kicked him out (he's 17 too). Unfortunately he'd been through a lot of trauma and after 8 months and a minor disagreement that had him calling my husband and I all sorts of names I told him if he didn't like our way of life (we're not rich but all the kids' needs are met including our 6yo son) then he was free to seek alternate accommodation.

I didn't kick him out but I wasn't holding him hostage if he didn't want to be there. He left and daughter followed. I still keep in touch and help her out where I can. They both have jobs and both still attend school. If they ever needed to come back I'd take them in.

If that eviction at 18 rang true for me I'd currently be screwed. The rental crisis hit my family about a month back and we've moved back in with my father and autistic brother (mum passed away from dementia related issues a few months ago). It's not that we can't afford a rental. There just aren't any rentals available. We also can't afford to buy unless it's on the outskirts of town which would cost an arm and a leg in fuel to get to and from work.

I think it's shit parenting to do this to your kids.

The whole "gotta move out at 18" bs came from capitalism in an effort to get everyone to spend more money. Instead of having a large family under one roof with one set of bills, break them up as soon as possible so you have multiple rents, multiple utility bills, multiple insurance plans, ect ect. This just proves this woman is drinking the tea. My children will be allowed to live with me as long as they wish.

I agree with the sentiment of what is being said here in this thread but in fairness I have seen teenagers that were so toxic and beyond reason that this is warranted. Kid in the video didn’t look surprised or devastated either. I have heard it said that god makes teenagers assholes so parents won’t be devastated when they leave. For me and my 2 siblings the rule was upon graduation we either move out, pay rent, or join full time religious fanaticism ministry. (JW’s). I moved out on my 18th birthday without eviction. My mother was and is toxic but I would need more context to pass judgment on this video. I saw it a couple days ago. I would ask if he’s still in school. If not, and he’s acting a fool, I would throw him out too. I have a 7 year old boy and can’t imagine doing that but he isn’t a teenager yet and I have seen multiple teenagers that I simply wouldn’t tolerate in my house beyond my legal obligation. By law, her job is now done and it’s possible that this is %100 warranted. I have seen it with girls too.

I work I’m NY helping students get financial aid for college. I’ve spoken to many kids who were kicked out of their homes when they turned 18. Some hadn’t even graduated from high school, yet.

Except for her first sentence, I agree with gratefullevi. First of all, no one can honestly view that video clip and make a serious morality judgement either way, about what or who’s right or wrong.

I’ve raised kid’s from birth to adulthood. I’ve worked with kid’s that weren’t mine, fed them, given them a bed, etc. My daughter has done the same. Based on those experiences and many other sources of information, there’s no way that anyone can legitimately make harsh judgements about either the son or the mother in that clip. Instead, the “wholly-than-thou” comments are way more telling than anything in the video. The commenter’s generally portray immaturity no matter their ages.

How so? To judge people extremely negatively without really knowing any of the facts is nothing but silly gossip. I only read a dozen or so comments, but saw only one that “may” have merit. But even then, there’s not enough information to seriously justify his hatred of his mother because “She circumcised me at birth”. If she really had anything to do with it and it was purely for religious or cultural reasons, then I ‘agree with the son’s sentiments. However, there are many, many extenuating circumstances that if known, could completely exonerate the mother in this case. For instance, I know that it wasn’t in any way my parent’s fault that I was subjected to RIC like he was. My parent’s were totally opposed, but the jackass doctor did it even after they had ordered him not too! I mentioned that to show how thing’s aren’t always the way they appear at first glance.

To take side’s over an actual eviction of an 18 year old, would require a lot of factual background information. Often the parent has provided love, affection, healthcare, entertainment, vacations, etc. but some teenager’s are hell bent on being unwilling to share in being a part of a stable and loving relationship. Instead, it’s all about them and instant gratification. Add to that, oftentimes they are destructive of the the family property, and/or are physically abusive. My daughter found that out in the past year when one of her foster teenage girls attacked her over an argument about a smartphone that wasn’t hers, and CPS had specifically told my daughter that she shouldn’t have one (my daughter had bought her a new flip phone, instead). No one should put up with being abused, especially when they are trying to help them without any expectation of personal benefit.

I don't know what you do with some kids. My nephew is 15 and just does as little as possible to get by. He doesn't like school, so we tried talking to him about an option my state has where you can get a 2 year tech degree for free during your junior and senior year of high school, but no interest. We try getting him to think of his future and ask how he plans to earn a living, etc. Nothing gets through. He just seems to think he has 2 years left on the gravy train before he has to think about that kind of thing. I guess we'll see what happens when the wi-fi and video game consoles are taken away.

For me as a parent, a major goal is to make my kid's transition from childhood to adulthood as smooth as possible. That means when they show good stewardship, I can trust them with a little more freedom. If they show bad stewardship, then we take a step back and they may lose some privileges. They're doing great and well on their way to becoming productive members of society.

My parents are both Mexcian and have lived with the idea that children don't move out until it's absolutely necessary. Every time I talked to them about moving out, they'd immediately discourage it and guilt-trip me into staying with them.

It took until my mid-twenties for me to decide that I no longer care what my parents think about it, and that I'm going to do it. It was the best decision I could make, and it took leaving to realize how much they held me back. I, of course, accept the majority of the responsibility, but I can't pretend as though "our culture" didn't have an influence on me.
