We do “2255”. Two days with me, two with the ex, 5 with me, 5 with the ex. Over a 14 day period it is still 7 with each of us (50/50), but never more than 5 away, and the weekends alternate.

For some people when I explain it they get really confused, so another way to look at it is that the kids are always with me Monday and Tuesday, with their mom Wednesday and Thursday, and then we alternate 3 day weekends.

We also use a family app to help manage the calendar and any requested switches.

For us, custody transfers occur “during school” so it has been easy to manage and requires minimal face to face contact.

I am sorry but what do you mean with alternate weekends? Not trying to be arrogant here, i just think i don't understand because english isn't my main language.

I switch the kids on sunday so 1 week i'll have friday and saturday for myself and pick up the kids on sunday afternoon. Next week i'll have the kids on friday and saturday and drop them off at their mothers on sunday afternoon.
You want a whole weekend for yourself switch exchange days any other day that isn't a weekend

Why not do one week on, one week off. I'd think with your youngest at 8 years old this shouldn't be a problem. You can maintain contact with video calls / FaceTime during the time that they are at the other parent's house.

We do Friday to Friday. I pick them up Friday afternoon and keep them until the following Friday when they go school. It’s convenient and you still get lots of time in with the kids.

2-2-3 works well in most situations, however with so much movement, so often, you need to have buy in from the kids as well. Remember, you're trying to do what's in their best interest at the end of the day. Some kids might prefer week by week rotation.

Why are you reinventing the wheel? This problem was figured out decades ago. 7/7 is the appropriate 50% parenting time schedule for kids of that age.
