This is a story because of the weirdness of it. It's prime true crime podcast fodder.

Nobody cares if anybody gets iced in the hood, man or woman. Those aren't good stories.

Plenty of white women are killed by their partners every year and we never hear about it because it's not strange enough to be news worthy.

The homicides people find interesting are ones that involve some added element of sadism and/or sexuality, or that are particularly gruesome or out of the ordinary. These types of crimes tend to be committed by men toward women. But when the victims are men, they get just as much coverage. John Wayne Gacy and Jeffrey Dahmer both had male victims and they're two of the most notorious killers with documentaries and movies still being made about them decades later.

Missing white women syndrome.

Kinda shocked at the responses in this thread so far, thought this was a well known thing.

Patrice O'Neil has a great thing in one of his comedy specials where he compares the coverage of murdered Natalie Holloway to the "big headed peruvian bitch" murdered by the same man.

But tbh, it's probably best not to make this some sob story for men. Sex workers are similarly ignored when murdered.

The media does whatever is going to get them clicks.

What gets clicks are things that are perceived as highly tragic, shocking, mysterious etc. So yes, this crime fits the bill. Any college campus murder is going to get an insane amount of coverage for this reason. The UVA shooting happened the same night as this crime and I didn’t even hear about the Idaho murders for 2 whole days because the UVA situation was dominating news coverage. That involved black men. And it was solved right away.

The pretty white girl syndrome has been a known thing in media coverage since forever. It sucks, it robs attention and resources from finding missing men and people of color, and it doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon.

I used to work in tabloid media, can confirm this is absolutely the case. Particularly in internet-world, we're so used to objectifying women, audiences respond to (read: click on) stories with pictures of conventionally attractive young white women a lot more readily than other kinds of people. It's sick.

The same goes for missing children. There are SO SO many children that go missing in the UK. Hardly ever will you hear about people of colour, it's usually white ones (often girls) that get reported on.

Society/tabloid readers likes to view females as "girl dolls", sweet and innocent (or hypersexy femme fatale).
