TL/DR: I've been married for 20+ years, youngest child about to turn 18, and want to start planning on how to divorce while minimizing the damage a vengeful STBX will do to me.

I'm brand new to the sub and will read everything I can. But I'm hoping to hear some advice directly from all of you on how to get started. Even what seems like the very first step of "talk to a lawyer" is difficult, because we have been married 20+ years and all of our finances are completely transparent to each other, so it's kind of hard to hide a consulting fee to a divorce lawyer.

Some highlights or specific things I'm worried about:

  • Married 20+ years. California. First marriage for both of us. 2 kids. 1 out of the house already and one about to turn 18 and then will be off to college in the fall.

  • Wife has anger issues and can be very vengeful and spiteful. She's advised my daughters that if they ever need to divorce their husbands in the future, that they should hide everything they can and take everything they can from him.

  • We are fairly successful financially. We own 2 homes and other assets. I say this just to give context that this is probably not a quick do-it-yourself type of divorce.

  • I make about 3 or 4x as much as her. But historically I made about 2x as her until landing a job in big tech. I worry that if spousal support is set based on my current compensation, it puts me in a precarious situation if anything were to happen to this job and I can't find another at this rate of comp.

  • We both started with nothing. All assets are marital assets.

  • We've both been unhappy for a long time, but I guess it's been fairly stable too. Pretty much no sex for years though. I finally made up my mind for good when I overheard her saying some things to my daughter about me when she didn't think I could hear. That both validated my decision to not leave her long ago (after her affair when the kids were young), as I knew she would keep my kids from me and poison them against me (my kids love me and I am much more involved with them than she is), and it also told me that this woman has poison deep down in her soul, or at least such underlying contempt for me that she would think it's a good idea to talk for half an hour about what a horrible person and father her husband was to her teenage daughter. I told myself that night that I would see this through and use the advantage of being the initiator to plan this out right.

Some questions:

  • What is the typical timeline and sequence of events? We were planning on moving to the other home we own since the tenants moved out and start renting the home we raised our kids in. I'm torn on whether I should move forward with that move. I want to keep acting like everything is normal until I'm sure of all of my plan. But it also seems foolish to move homes together if I know I want a divorce. I also worry about getting new tenants into the first home if we end up needing to sell it in the divorce. But I don't know if that all happens 6 months from now or 3 years from now.

  • I'm assuming at least waiting a few months for my youngest to turn 18 before doing anything will probably make things simpler, correct?

  • How do I protect myself financially starting the day I file and serve her? She's going to do everything she can to destroy me as soon as she is served.

  • How does spousal support normally work? Will I be paying her based on my current compensation forever?

  • How do people start consulting with a lawyer when all of your finances are co-mingled and transparent to each other?

  • Are there any good resources you can recommend that I can start learning from now to take advantage of this time before the battle starts?
