Not to stop the circlejerk, but muscle dysmorphia is a real issue, and He-Man's physique doesn't help. Like Barbie, he also has a very low body fat percentage. Combined with his swole physique, He-Man's image is not so achievable either. Granted that it's far better than straight-up anorexia, the steroid abuse that some may come by on the road to He-Mandom is dangerous itself.

Barbie is also unrealistically thin because girls used to dress her up and clothes wouldn't look right on a "normal" doll.

Its interesting that people accuse Barbie of being invented "by men" - wasn't Barbie's inventor a woman?

Also, the fact is that many young girls don't look at Barbie and see "everything you'll never be," but rather an aspirational figure they can identify with... i.e. a figure that represents glamour (in the deep sense of the term... see Virginia Postrel's recent work on the subject). If Barbie did not represent things young girls really want (i.e. if she only represented a male fantasy of a hot girlfriend, rather than a female fantasy), Barbie simply would not sell.

Hell, if Barbie represented a male fantasy, you'd expect Barbie would be more popular amongst men, right?

You could argue that young women have been indoctrinated into wanting to be like Barbie, but this goes both ways - men get gender conditioning too and are told they have to be X otherwise they're "not real men" etc (this is something which men are actually more subject to than women).

Finally, dolls vs. action figures... hardly that different from each other and they perform the same function (I guess to allow kids to fantasize about some kind of idealized adult life they want to have). But of course, no one questions training young boys to be cannon fodder soldiers.
