Whedon, then, delivers a speech on the term "feminist" without any reference to feminist history, without any apparent awareness of feminist theory, and without even any demonstrated knowledge of the most important objections or conflicts around the term "feminist," the use of which he is purportedly discussing. Instead, from his position as celebrity and writer, and, one fears, from his position as white man, he takes it upon himself to simply define feminism himself so that he can discard it.

Because of course Joss Whedon wouldn't know the first thing about feminism, right?

Snarky articles like this are a big part of why feminism is losing it's appeal. Every generation fewer and fewer people identify as feminists and existing feminists are well aware of their growing irrelevancy. Hence the particularly nasty ways they've been acting out lately.

The reason Whedon can stand up at the podium and say that equality is natural is because all these feminists he doesn't talk about, from Susan B. Anthony and Sojourner Truth on up, have fought exhausting battle after exhausting, grinding battle to get to this point.

So give them a statue.

Using the same logic, I should go down to the beach and start attacking Germans because Winston Churchill enjoined us to in 1941.

Times change. Whether 'feminism' is a good idea depends on the social context. I would have been a (liberal) feminist in 1970, 1980, and possibly even 1990. But right now, absolutely not. Not when there's a third more women than men going to university and nearly 4 times as many men killing themselves as women. Only someone in the grip of an ideology would give lexical priority to tackling the social issues facing women in 2013.

Just like Warren Farrell had to open his eyes to abuses, perhaps now it is time for the jackals to attack Joss Whedon as well.

This is why feminists can't have allies. Not because men are evil, but because we are always "other". We will never be accepted into feminism, no matter how hard we fight. We are only as good as our last contribution.. combined with expected future contributions.

Sorry Joss. This is what happens when you join the conversation. May your strong female roles and previous work be enough to shield you from the cruel fickle finger of feminist dogma.
