Given the #Ibelieveher hashtag which is exploding all over Twitter and the number of people saying "A not guilty verdict doesn't necessarily prove innocence" I wouldn't hold your breath. On a side note, how sickening is it to see people using phrases like "clear his name" or "prove innocence"? In our alleged justice system, one's name and/or innocence isn't supposed to be blackened until they have been proven guilty.

He mentions at the end that people mislead that 6% of rapes are brought to justice and that it's much higher, but what is the actual number? He just leaves it there.

The other factor in this case was that there was NO EVIDENCE OF ANY KIND offered by the prosecution ! It added up solely to a SHE SAID case !

Yet this man had to endure months and months of personal destruction.

It's not just about rape. I sort of believe everyone should have pre-conviction anonymity regardless of the crime. Being accused of anything can potentially be life changing even if later found not guilty.

However, the freedom of the press is an enumerated right in the Constitution; which means the only way to get pre-conviction anonymity would be to have a constitutional amendment which alters the First Amendment - and I don't see that happening.

even though this guy is trying to stand up for the right thing, he still falls into the feminist trap of assuming people who are accused of rape are "men".

People are accused of sex crimes, both male and female...and both are entitled to the same anonymity as the accuser. Whether that level of anonymity is total, or none at all, is a valid discussion, but both are entitled to equal treatment.

I got an idea. Have the pre-conviction anonymity and three possible verdicts (with variations/exceptions for self-defence and the like): 1) Guilty: the evidence clearly shows that the accused did it 2) Innocent: the evidence clearly shows that the accused didn't do it 3) Not Proven: the evidence isn't clear one way or the other.

It was only the fact that a woman or two came out claiming to have been raped by Jimmy Saville that lead to a host of other victims coming out and admitting that they too had been victims. Putting the name out there leads to additional witnesses/victims coming forward.

The problem here isn't the lack of anonymity, but the assumption of guilt without it being proven. Providing anonymity as protection would be skirting the problem in order to fight a symptom and simply result in different victims. The only real solutions here are to increase our ability to "prove" when someone has or hasn't been raped and to reinforce our mantra of Innocence until proven Guilty.

Still, looks like your in better shape in the UK. At least it is up for discussion in the media in reports like this one. I know from living there for just a short time and following the media, men's issues are being taken far more seriously than here in the US. Though still getting shit on, at least the UK is willing to broach the topic intellectually.

This brings up a very interesting dilemma: if the victim's identity is "protected" and the defendant's identity is "protected," we now have a secret trial. One of the great things about allowing this information to remain public is that it keeps the courts honest.

I don't think the solution is anonymity... I think the penalty for false allegations should be harsher and perhaps a bit easier to bring civil cases against accusers.

Why would someone accused of rape get anonymity over any other person accused of any other crime? I feel deep sympathy for anyone who has their life ruined by a false accusation of any crime, it's a major problem with media mixing in the judicial system. However blanket anonymity in the court system would be a bad thing, I think we all agree there is a reason having a public trial is a right. You're supposed to be able to leave with a clear name when you are innocent. I think the problem is not as much pre-conviction, but post-trial. For some reason we don't trust the court to do it's job and that creates all sorts of problems.

Thats his fault for getting wrapped up in a rape trial. I dont think anonymity is necessary.
