What is your opinion on women in art done by men?

Oooh there’s a book on this, gosh wish I could remember the name but I think men making art of women is fine! Historically though….most of the time the art is pornographic/hyper sexualized or I just look at the girl and go “where are her guts?” Because she’s so skinny

Draw anything you want but it’s your audience that decides whether it is good or not.

Just match it to the goal. If you're drawing tits and ass and $(your favorite body part here), and then twisting the rest of the body around them, that's going to show. You want to think about who your audience is and what you're trying to say to them.

I'm bi, and there are images/poses I might appreciate in my, ahem, private time that would make me really uncomfortable if I ran across them in a mortgage ad or a kids' book or an instruction manual for assembling furniture, you know?

As far as art goes, there's nothing wrong with being sensual, just be aware that sensual drawings of young attractive women has been done. Like a lot.

Again, if it's just for technical practice or personal pleasure, do whatever makes you happy. But if you're trying to find your voice as an artist, you're going to want to dig a little deeper.

I don't have a problem with men drawing women in general or in the nude specifically. My issue is when women are only drawn in hypersexualized ways or look like all their organs are shoved into their tits because there's not enough room for them anywhere else in their bodies. I really like Andrey Tarusov's art, he draws very comically exaggerated skinny waists but he also does more realistic bodies, he also includes women who are tall, fat, small boobs, big boobs, etc. The guy does pin-ups, I'm perfectly fine with those being sexy. I will roll my eyes at a comic book that has the female character contorted in absurd ways to get her ass and boobs out in full display.

I don't particularly care whether or not you draw naked ladies. Art helps us express something, and sometimes that "something" is sexuality or sensuality, which is an important part of the human experience.

If the thing you're trying to express in your art is that women are vapid gold-digging bimbos, I may dislike your art because I take issue with your message. (But you are allowed to make art that I dislike.)

If the thing you're trying to express is that nude bodies are beautiful, or sexuality is profound, then I agree with your message, and if your art is well done, I will probably appreciate it.

I don't think there's anything inherently exploitative about nudity. Carry on drawing naked ladies if you like.

But if you're concerned what kind of eye you are using for this start making art in this style with men in it and see how things compare.

In isolated cirumstances it is fine but it's so overdone to the point it is eye rolling at this point. A quick scroll through r/ art shows this and I know this debate has come up there before.

Many men complain about how men aren't appreciated for their looks and desired, yet contribute constantly to a culture that percieves beauty as strictly a female aesthetic.

There's a huge gap in the market for showing the beauty and sensuality of men in art. Things won't change unless people buck the trend and it's a much bolder artistic move imo.

On one hand, I love drawing the naked female body, and I can totally understand why people prefer drawing nude female to nude males.

On the other, I've heard of women complaining that a naked female body is more likely to find its way in a museum than any art by a female artist, which I think is a fair complaint.

As for you personally, draw whatever you want. Sexual or not, you can. It's more of a societal issue I think, and not anything that an individual artist can change. It would be helpful to contribute less unrealistic proportions in art that is clearly meant to be taken as realistic, though.

Draw/paint what you want how you want. It’s impossible to create anything that everyone will approve of. There really isn’t a correct answer for what and how you should paint as it will always depend on your message and audience.

For me, art is art, you do what you do and it'll find the audience it is meant to. Personally, so long as any models you have feel safe and respected, great.

I don't mind when anyone does art of anyone unless it feels somehow inherently exploitative or derivative. (Like, stop taking pictures of fly covered starving children and give them a sandwich and help).

I think it can be a little tiresome when it always feels like a dude's art is being done for like near spank bank material and really isn't about anything except sex. You know, every woman is an hourglass who happens to be in a bikini.

But also, that isn't for me. And I realize that. It's for pervy dudes.

The art of women I like tends to feel more like beautiful, ethereal, and just like, romantic. The nudity might feel intimate, but not necessarily erotic, like bathing with your mother as a child or being naked around other women.

I think a piece of art speaks for itself. If people are judging it differently because of the sex of the artist, then that’s a reflection of their bias, not the artist’s.

Figurative art doesn’t magically become objectifying porn just because someone discovers the artist was male. Certainly art is subjective, but judging it by the sex of the artist rather than it’s own merit is simply sexist.

No, not all art of women is objectifying. And do whatever you want— some people will like it and others will not, and that’s fine. People are supposed to interact with art and criticism is part of how people interpret and interact with art.

For me personally, it’s not whether it’s nude or even erotic that is annoying. I find art that has nothing to say except “hurr, she shore is purty” to be just kind of dumb and shallow. There’s a whole lot of that on the Reddit art channel— an idealized drawing of a woman’s face as a wet-eyed, pout-faced waifu, with a cute upturned blushing button nose reads similarly to me as a big-tittied wasp-waisted pin-up. It’s art that says nothing more than “this is what this dude/lady wants a woman to look like”. It’s just kinda… boring and stupid.

Like, I just don’t particularly care what gets you hard or what kind of woman’s face makes you get all sappy and protective. It’s boring. It’s fine to do either kind of art if you want, and if your audience likes it, fine, go for it. But having a little bit more substance would be less shallow and more interesting.

Edit: as for your historical paintings… I think #2 is most objectifying by quite a bit. She’s painted as an anonymous naked sex slave to be ogled by the viewer. And she’s in one of those bizarre poses designed to show off her body, while in this case also making it seem like she’s ashamed— I can’t imagine ever seeing a real human naturally taking that posture, to be honest. It’s very stilted.

As a women I have never looked a painting or statue of a naked women and been offended. I think a women’s body is beautiful and if you can make art of it then go for it.
