Just pointing out a reality.

No matter what you’ve done to support and lift up a partner (or a friend) in your life, ultimately there will not be any loyalty or gratitude given to you if, down the road, that person’s feelings change regardless if they change because you’ve done something to deserve it.

I’ve been burned pretty badly by this a couple times now, being tossed aside once my partner achieves a certain goal or success in life. I’m sure many of you have experienced this, where it’s confusing why the partner doesn’t remember or care about all that you’ve done for them or the sacrifices you made. Whether it’s protecting them (in some cases from serious self harm) or supporting them in their goals.

2 ways to approach this:

  1. Stop supporting people and focus only on what’s best for me if I had no responsibility to anybody else. Seems self centered, but ultimately it’s what many partners in my life have done.

  2. Decide that your support for others is given with the understanding that you will receive 0 in return. Giving support to a loved one may potentially bring you more happiness than the extra time and energy you may have by not supporting them (no. 1).
