Hi! I’m trying to get into an agreement with my wife so we can part ways, but of course she blames me for every single thing that went wrong in the last 30 years and believes that she “sacrificed” her life for me (meaning she must be very well financially compensated now to try and dull all her pain and resentment).

Anyway, she won’t accept anything I offer and wants more money, so I went to seek legal advise this week and they just threw this idea out there (which acc to them, it’s a very common thing these days) - They gave me some examples of men that offer the wife their equity on the house in exchange for spousal support so they would never have to pay it - which in my case would mean: I give my wife 100k which is my equity and I will never have to pay for spousal support.

And I already know spousal support in my case will be around 2k a month. I’ve been married for 28 years so if I have to pay 14 years (half of the marriage length which is the law in CA) that’s 168 months X $2k = $336k in the end of the 14 years.

But when I look at this I think “well, she will find someone else and get married soon so I won’t have to pay this for too long…”.

The tricky part is that my wife may or may never get married again which would stop spousal support. She also may or may not become financially self-sufficient (I’d say this is hard given she doesn’t have a degree and works part time at minimum wage) so that spousal support would stop.

That said, my question is - Should I offer her my equity in exchange for spousal support?

At first, I rejected the idea because the equity is the only thing I own financially, my only asset other than an used 2017 car (although I have a good job and I can eventually get back on my feet), but I confess that the idea of keeping my own salary not having to pay a fortune every month, and only paying child support (which would be around $600 only), definitely sounds more attractive now…
