Great job! Gym is a great place because most everyone there actually is trying to improve in some way so that makes a nice common denominator.

Good job on the approach too. Another thing I like to do is to compliment them on their outfit. Some women do go the extra mile in the gym, and match and complement everything from shoe laces upwards. I actually do try myself to get things matched up as good as possible.

So something like..."Hey, I really like your outfit, or colors, or match or something" is a great way to start. Since I am married, I am not seriously pursuing anyone there, but just for "practice", I do a cold convo to different people. The other day, I complimented a woman on her shoulders and arms, they really looked good to me, I know her though and we are both married, but it still is practice....

An easy ice breaker for me is to find something non-physical to compliment about them.

Maybe they look great in that outfit, it’s complementing their choice of style.

Or

At the gym you could tell her she’s really good at something and perhaps ask if she can show you how to do it.

Going up and telling a girl she’s cute probably won’t lead anywhere usually, the goal is to start a conversation, get to know them and then see where things go.

A million guys have told a pretty girl she’s pretty, so you won’t stand out or even really flatter her something special.
