Say "Hey, how's it goin?"

Elevators are tricky because she's less likely to hold up the conversation on her end, so you might have to do most of the work. Just don't be nervous about it, and pretend the elevator is no different than your place.

So if she responds with something legit, feed off of that and thread the conversation. Or bring up something out of left-field if it's right for the situation. If she just responds with "Fine," I'd probably keep my eye on her for about a second (just to show her how comfortable I am), then turn away for a few seconds, then follow-up with something situational (either think of something good, or just start off with the normal shit- something about where she lives, or the weather, or where she's headed. Girls will usually be pretty open to you about that shit if you're friendly).

From there, it's up to you. You can be bold and try for a number, or you can just invite her somewhere if you're going somewhere soon (like a party). That's usually what I do. And if you happen to be walking the same way, just stay with her and delve into some more stuff. Keep it friendly but a bit flirty, be high-value, and just do normal day game shit.

Most recently, I was in an elevator with a few guys and girls (we were all coming from the same place). Everyone was sort of staring straight ahead, so I turned to the girl on my left and said something about the teacher (something about the teacher being really nice but really weird). She immediately opened up, and I could feel everyone else opening up too. I ended up talking to that girl for like 10 minutes while we were outside, and even some of the guys got involved in the conversation. That girl was married, but I considered it a "win" for me. I got a good conversation going and got a few people involved in it, all because I decided to speak up when we were in the elevator.

The main thing to realize is that elevator rides are awkward for everyone- but as soon as someone speaks up, everyone gets more comfortable. The same is true with buses, trains, planes, and any other situation where talking isn't the norm. Smoke breaks are the best for it. Everyone's out smoking, but if you're strangers, you won't talk to anyone. Just force yourself to go do it. and you'll see how easy it is to have a good conversation (at the very least).

Edit: The only thing I wouldn't recommend in an elevator is kino. That can be weird as shit unless you know what you're doing or it's pretty clear that she won't mind it (or if it's really basic incidental stuff, like a little shoulder tap- just make sure you're both facing in a way that doesn't make it a surprise for her).

Maybe turn it into a game?

You could say something like...

"Hi, I'm cuppajoe123. Let's see how much we can learn about each other before we get off the elevator."
"Hey have you ever been in an elevator alone and jumped when it was going down so it felt like you were free falling?"
"Have you ever been in an elevator alone and started dancing like a crazy person? I sure have. "

Just be silly like that maybe? That's all the ideas I got for now.

There was a recent internet scandal about some feminist who blogged about being hit on during an elevator ride. This incited a huge flamewar. She felt (understandably) uncomfortable. Some aggressive flamer men accused her of being hypersensitive, but they were mostly taking her words out of context and exaggerating. I'm not going to bother to link to it, you could probably find it if you want.

I would suggest NOT opening a girl inside an elevator, she is basically trapped and is worried about being defenseless during an attack. Sure, go ahead and open her while you're waiting for the elevator, but after entering the elevator, I'd only talk to her if it's a continuation of the conversation outside, and she seems to invite it.

There's a video out there of a guy telling you to talk to everyone in the elevator about how it's funny that people never talk in the elevator and get into that freeze mode. It must be linked somewhere on seddit but I didn't find it.

Go into the elevator, push the button for your floor and, rather than finding an empty spot and turning around to face the door as is expected, continue to face all the passengers. Then open with some variation of this: "Have you ever noticed that there are certain rules to riding in an elevator. I mean, I'm breaking at least two right now because I didn't turn around and I'm talking to people I don't know. Who made up these rules anyways? What happens if you break them? I like breaking rules, so let's find out..." Then start calling on people with stuff like "You! What's your name?" and "Have you always lived in [city]?" until you get a conversation going.

I used to do this before I learned anything about PUA. It's great fun. The whole atmosphere changes... first a lot of tension... then very comfortable ease.

One rule I wouldn't break is the prohibition of kino in elevators. Though, you could say "And we're not supposed to touch the people we don't know, so dude... gimme a high five!"

Use any opener and assume she will follow you wherever you are going. If she doesn't follow you she will have to come up with an excuse for it.
