"Make a bro."
When I go out by myself, the first thing I do is find a lone guy to talk to. After we're bros, approaching women just seems easier. Sometimes this guy can turn into my wingman for the rest of the night. I've found that once you get the ball rolling you gain momentum and the rest of the night becomes easier. Making the first approach on a guy makes it easier to start.

This is so true. Stopped at Starbucks the other day before my night out. Weird creepy guy started talking to me. After talking to him for 5 min while waiting for my drink, talking to anyone else seemed way easier

Doesn't work when you're in SF. I've annoyed a few men who thought I was talking to them, instead of girls, at a bar because I was interested.

Could just be environment man, cos you know if my British ass were lucky enough to be in SFO, you know I'd be down.
[–]kshlecky 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Why would you be hanging out in the airport?
[–]whatsgoodfx 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Haha KSFO now that's potential.

This works unbelievably well at college parties. Showed up to a party by myself because my roommate was out of town. Immediately bonded with some guy over the girls that were around us. We both ended up dancing and hooking up with the most attractive girls there. We were right next to each other when this happened so we sneaked in a fist bump to acknowledge our success. Didn't even know his name.

Try Short Sets. The moment you get into the venue, start opening the first people you see, but keep it a very short interaction, maybe nothing more than "hey how are you doing tonight?" Then move on to the next set. Open 4 or 5 sets in short succession (thus the name short sets). This builds momentum, and establishes social proof since everyone sees you talking to everyone else, and it looks like you know everyone. You can always re-open a set later on, you've already opened them once so it's easier to re-open since they are already familiar with you.

Brilliant.

Yeah, be like this guy. Ultimate player, no lie.
[–]gigitygigitygoo 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Great idea to get the ball rolling but more importantly, demonstrate social proof.

Sounds very fluid, just whoever is closest to the door. Will do!

Hah. I like the High five thing too it's a very funny thing to do.
We had another game: When you are out with a friend you tell him to open a set and if he does, good, but if he doesn't he owes you a shot. After that it's your turn to open a set and this goes on and on.
Usually every night we had only 1 or 2 shots to buy but opened about 10 to 15 sets.
[–]paleos 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
We do this too but for 100-200$ makes it way more motivating!
[–]randomstuffineed -2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Doesn't this kinda put pressure on you and your friend?? I mean i dont want to fail at opening a set and then i have to buy a shot too :(
[–][deleted] 20 points21 points22 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
He's saying if his buddy doesn't have the balls to open a set then he must buy a shot and vice versa. The outcome of the set doesn't matter.
[–]Ragas 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Exactly this.

I like pretending to own the place, literally, like telling people "Thanks for coming!" or something along those lines when they enter or exit.
[–]jdepps113 26 points27 points28 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
/u/watermelonpickle: "Hey, thanks for coming! Great to see you here tonight!"
random stranger: "There's a sign on the front that says 'Lou's Tavern'. I'm fucking Lou. Who the fuck are you?"
[–]watermelonpickle 7 points8 points9 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I've had that happen where I've said that to the owner of a place, they usually just laugh and realize that I'm joking around.
[–]kazyfake 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
/u/watermelonpickle : Hey, I'm Lou, too! I own the place!
[–]watermelonpickle 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
As long as you say it in a way that they know you're joking that's a great response.

If it's still pretty quiet in the bar or wherever, talk to the people who are paid to be nice to you (bartenders, bouncers, shot girls, shop keepers, ect). Some of the nights where I have been in the best state have been when I have gotten to the bar and talked to the bartender for about 30mins till the bar starts to fill up.

Congratulations! You have just experienced something big. Now, instead of wasting time with a particular tactic (pre-PUA warmup), within a single particular activity (PUA); you can expand your life skills!
This simple statement summarizes the science behind it http://i.imgur.com/EjojXPN.jpg
The point is, instead of waiting to be in the mood to do something, do it and you'll realize you'll be in the mood.
Just do it!

I always yell "woooo!" When i walk into a bar/club
[–]whatsgoodfx 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
So you were the one who made that sound last week, I knew it!
[–]will566393 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I have a mate with terrible AA... He's taken to finding random numbers during the week (on university noticeboards etc.) and ringing them while he waits to get into a club. It sounds awkward, I know, but it works for him... he makes a game out of it and sounds friendly, and by the time he gets in, he's ready to open.

Think of all the genuine questions you've asked mall employees in the past and turn them into a routine it can be as simple as one line or as complex as a 20 min routine.
I have one i discovered on accident when i wanted to find prescription like rectangular sunglasses and went into sunglass hut. My final revision turned out something like this, i didnt follow it strictly but it was my general outline.
"Excuse me, are there are any glasses you would recommend for my type of facial structure?"
Usual response was "depends on what you're looking for."
This next part is important as you want to remove the frame of potential customer and they absolutely cant refuse, but i will say the tolerance varies from person to person. "Im not really looking to buy right now, i just need a future reference."
(This is where my response always varied although staying true to the rectangular idea)
"Im looking for rectangular slender glasses, im thinking similar to the ray ban predators like in the matrix, men in black, and the boondock saints." What followed was the employee would grab a pair of sunglasses "try these" (disqualify sunglasses) these are a little to big, blah blah blah"
making small talk in between is important if you want to prolong the interaction past simply being shown 3-4 pairs before hearing the tolerance break of "did you still want to try on anymore orr?"
it will happen either way if you push on long enough but i've gotten to 15 pairs before by interjecting conversation in between.

Mall Game: Try to approach 3-5 sets at the mall or even a grocery store. Warm up with sales associates/kiosk workers.
Have long conversations with easy sets: I usually have a good semi long conversation with fat semi old sets. Like 2 fat black chicks for example. Mostly do this when I go alone.
Simply Approach: Sometimes I have some unbelievably Shitty nights but then I approach the next set and Bang Instant Makeout or you find a chick that wants to go home with you right away.Even a conversation that goes semi well will get you motivated.
Meditate: Good way of getting into an easy calm state.

I can't stress enough how important warm ups are.
Even if you feel low of energy, small sets can change your time a complete 180. Even if you feel on top of the world, warm ups are important.
Once you warm up, the momentum will make it feel 'unnatural' to NOT talk.
I usually warm up by talking with people within my comfort zone. This is usually in places I normally commute to and from such as on campus, the library, or the grocery store. You don't have to be committed to a full conversation, but doing something in a low stress environment definitely makes you feel more motivated and confident. However, don't warm up at bars unless you have a regular place you usually go to. That's just my suggestion. If you feel pressured to warm up in the higher stress under pressure atmosphere, it makes it a bit more difficult it seems like to me. This works for some people, so I'm not saying my way works all the time, but it's just my observation that works for me!
Good luck and have fun. Also...don't fap before going out. It kills your drive, motivation, and energy. ;P

I typically walk to venues as I live in a college town, so this may not work for you but: I like to stop at an establishment before I go to where I'm actually heading just to start talking to people. I'll ask the staff how their day is going, they'll typically explain how they are ready to get off of work, and I'll just tell them to come find me at XYZ when they do. I've only had 1 girl actually show up that I know of, but all the same, it builds the momentum others are talking about.

I always listen to high energy music, like trance/electronica or some hip hop that hits really hard. i then just make an asshat of myself and my friends in the car. ill roll my window down and dance for people, yell at them, try to make them interact with me. i always blow kisses to old ladies, make funny faces at dudes and girls alike. i just have a ton of fun. After making a total ass of my self and all hyped up, i can walk into any bar not have any kind of anxiety, shyness, whatever.
