Me: "Could you cover up your name tag for me for a sec?"
What?
Her: Sir, that's inappropriate. You can't talk to me like that. I'm a professional. Me: "Why does that matter?"
Her: Sir, that's inappropriate. You can't talk to me like that. I'm a professional.
Me: "Why does that matter?"
You should have disengaged instead of pry.
Op if you have to enter a defensive state when engaging another person. DISENGAGE.
[–]ThingsCouldGetKinky 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That "why does it matter?" probably did the most damage, because, to me, it completely invalidated her position, body language, and words.
I'd have noped out of there immediately.

Sounds like you're leaving us in the dark on some details.
[–]Tibble_Buns[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
What details do you feel I left out?
[–]tramplemestilsken 38 points39 points40 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Kind of an awkward way to approach. Asking someone to cover their nametag is automatically going to put them on the defensive, because it's a weird thing to ask someone to do.
Then again, if Ryan Gosling did it they would think it's hilarious. You only have so much influence over their reactions. You dodged a bullet. A guy talks to you and you threaten to call the cops? Really?

It's creepier to scope out and plan the strike then to just do the strike spontaneously. In my experience, it becomes way creepier for someone to take a few minutes to plan a way to get the girl in a certain circumstance rather than just going for it regardless. When people strategize they'll be watching where the girl is going and if the girl catches you watching them multiple times, they'll keep wondering what the hell that guy is watching her for. THAT'S CREEPY. Plus, by the time someone figured out the logistics of how to approach her not from behind, she's usually already gone.
On top of that, by planning the logistics of getting her in the right place, guys get in their head. THAT will fuck with people's game even more then following some silly rule about approaching from behind. How about Liam Mcrae, James Marshall, and Sasha Daytime's infield videos? There's loads of them where they approach from behind and the interaction goes well. Here's an example of Liam Mcrae doing it, here's another with James Marshall, and for good measure here's one from Sasha.
Sometimes I add in the preframe like Sasha does but I find if the girl is receptive in the first place it doesn't matter too much. All in all I don't see a correlation between approaching from behind. My experience, watching infield videos, and watching other guys interacting with girls tells me otherwise. I don't see a reason to call it "common sense".
[–]Tibble_Buns[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yah it does sound canned, I admit that. But I thought of it in the moment and just genuinely thought it would be fun to do.
[–]tramplemestilsken 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Kudos. You thought of something and went for it, and calibrated after. 90% of men won't get there because they'll just be in their head about it. It's easy for us as outsiders to critique, but you're the one that went for it. Keep it up dude!
[–]DirkDieGurke 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Say "hi", ask her her name, gauge her interest level. Proceed appropriately.
[–]LosAngelesVikings 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
At what point do I ask her to cover her nametag?
[–]DirkDieGurke 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If you have to use a gimmick fine, but you'll probably get better results being more natural and just see where the conversation leads. Starting off with some weird game she's not familiar with will likely put her in an awkward frame of mind.
[–]lofiharvest 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That girl wasn't interested. Theres no great take away or analysis to be had here. You should have backed off way earlier in the conversation.
[–]Titanruss 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
you freaked her out. plain and simple. there's not enough detail here to know why exactly, but it sounds like somebody else got hit on at the gym and it ended badly... so hopefully it was nothing you did.
[–]AliasSomerset 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think the biggest mistake was saying, "Why does that matter?" Like what was said about invalidating her position.
She wasn't interested and there was little if anything you could do, and the reason she felt as threatened as she did has more to do with her own experiences, unfortunately, than with what you did.
At the end of the day though, you're not going to get along with everyone. You'll be fine and don't worry about what other people say about you for approaching a cute girl at a gym.
Oh, and "Excuse me" definitely isn't "weak." It's actually good manners if you need to get someone's attention and they aren't facing you.
I was thinking how it hasn't matter to so many other girls that I've approached at work before, and they were all extremely receptive, so I was genuinely wondering why she thought it mattered, but I see how it comes off as defensive.
And the "excuse me" is because of the approach from behind. People say not to approach from behind, but I've had great interactions with girls regardless. I add the "excuse me" because I feel it softens the approach from behind.
[–]Fumblz 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Honestly, If she was reseptive for the first few seconds and got cold, she might have been fuckign with you. I dont know.
When shit like this happens, i treat it like any other shit test, swat it away.
You did nothing wrong, you joked around, wanted to talk to her, if you see she was continuing on being all defensive, " alright good talk, lets do it again" and walk away.
She blew it out of proportion. Its not like you followed her and said hey you sexy bitch, iv been staring at your ass so long i need visine.
Don't let shit like this stop you from approaching.
(Also, just a thought. Might be that you approached from behind and in context said she was hot. She might have just thought you where checking out her ass and got pissed.)
[–]JefemanG 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well, not all girls are receptive to this approach for one, especially at work.
Also, your approach and how you handled her was really weird. I could totally see her getting further creeped out by it. You should have let it go as soon as she tried to disengage, instead of pushing harder, that just made her feel like a target and she acted accordingly.
[–]tedcorp 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't see this as a warning of how some women might react to an approach.
I read it as more of a lesson how bullshit born games can make women uncomfortable because they don't know what to expect next. While improvisation has its time and place, I definitely think that a cold intro is not it.
I venture to advise that most women worth engaging will want to feel like they're part of the process. If they feel like they have no control upon opening, really...what are the real odds that most will feel safe in your company...alone and naked?
[–]philosarapter 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Well while your approach was cringy, I don't think you should fear all women doing this now. The girl told you she wasn't interested several times. If you don't ever take the hint, then yeah of course a girl is going to call the cops on you. You verbally backed her into a corner where you would not take no for an answer and kept persisting. That tends to make people feel unsafe.
Learn to take a hint and handle the rejection gracefully instead of pestering her and 'test the waters' before you go on confessing your attraction for the women in your office. They may not take too kindly to upfront advances. It seems this woman valued her professionalism at work, and you were stepping all over that. Know your audience.
Lastly, never approach or surprise a girl from behind. That's super creepy and sets off a lot of red flags
[–]koolaid_zombie 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Good post. Don't listen to the douchebag jabroney trying to call you weak.
You didn't get the opportunity to analyze the entire encounter after it happened and nit pick every detail. You just winged it and it didnt go so well. Shit happens. It could have not had anything to do with you.
Good job keeping a positive mindset and keeping at it. A positive outlook is the most helpful thing you can give yourself.

Thank you! I feel that I should just go with my gut. I'm going to make mistakes along the way, and it's about being okay with that to me.
[–]BravoPUA 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
your GUT got you to where you were
try NEW things, things you are almost 100% sure won't work, step out of your comfort zone
THEN when you have leveled up from experience, then start trusting your GUT
4 levels of mastery and you are still at step 2...so by definition shouldn't trust your GUT
-and of course this doesnt apply to anything illegal
[–]nerdswithgirls1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Well, buddy, she kind of told you to fuck off earlier ;) And yeah, I also observed that some women are really uncomfortable with any kind of sexual approach, especially at their work. You have to move on then, but luckily there's so many women.
[–]BravoPUA -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link
"Excuse me" = weak
Then a awkward line about covering her name tag?
Then no smooth follow up when she called you out on hitting on her friend.
And shitting where you eat
Ya, guys BE CAREFUL
If you do all this weak shit, you might make a girl uncomfortable!
[–]koolaid_zombie 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
Couldn't help but notice you didnt give any alternative suggestions. Or even halfway constructive criticism.
You just ballbusted OP and made yourself out to be a douchebag to myself and I'm sure other commentors.
[+]BravoPUA -6 points-5 points-4 points 10 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
I usually wait for the guy to understand what I'm pointing out, then ASK for some advice, before I give it to them.
Otherwise, I've learned from years of teaching this stuff, that usually the advice and my time, will be wasted. (However, every point I covered IS actually advice for those smart enough to get it)
I also get tired of posts like this here, and I my forum. Where a guy runs weak game, causes a bad interaction, then tries to inspire other guys.
When he really should just worry about what he did and try to work on it. Which I didn't see ANY of that here.

What's your forum, big guy?

My forum on my site. Few thousand. All word of mouth 0% advertising for it and my events (my own successful company for 6+ years)
This is my job not a side hobby, like all but a handful of coaches.
Before that Stylelife forum with 100,000+ members.

If you're so damn good you'd know how to actually offer constructive teaching rather than coming off like an insecure asshole. Competent, confident people don't need to run around bragging about how great they are. If you can take the effort to write an ego-padding, useless comment, how much more effort would it have been to write one single bit of clear, constructive advice?
[–]c00kiecutter 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
His answer was constructive. OP messed up and tried to blame it on the girl ("Perhaps she mistook me for someone else"). Bravo pointed out that OP was acting weirdly and that's why the girl freaked out.
[–]bjlmag -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
He could've written a comment worded like that, instead of riding through on his high horse. We don't need insecure asshole filling the comment section.

Or I can coach/post the way I like.
I didn't tell you how to post.
I also don't tell guys what they want to hear. I tell them what they NEED to hear.
Men thank me
Boys get their feeling hurt. :(
[–]bjlmag -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
OK, little buddy :)
Are you a big fat skipper?
[–]BravoPUA -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I gave him what he needed to hear.
Many (usually those who CANT do what I do) love to tell me how I SHOULD coach.
Oh and chicks, chicks love to tell me how I should coach guys as well.
Interesting enough, neither can actually successfully do it.

I've been watching a ton of RSD videos recently and they have the rule of 4. Here you were rejected 5 times. Had you ejected that 4th time you woulda been cool. Lesson learned.
[–]Woujo 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
OP you're posting this like you discovered some deep secret about the world. The fact is that this should be common knowledge to anybody who isn't a creep. When somebody says "no" you stop. It's pretty obvious.
[–]erythrocyte666 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Okay, we can't control others' behavior, which is motivated by a whole host of variables unknown to us. There's no point even wondering why they might act as they did. Hence, what we can look at are our own faults and mistakes. So in this case what I would have done is approach from the side first. I would have tried to praise on something non-innate (my rule of thumb is intent over content ). Then if she goes into the described attitude, instead of ignoring that, I would apologize and make it clear it wasn't my intention to offend her in anyway. I'd also try to clarify that she might be thinking of the wrong person in the context of the thing about person XX. Then I'd say it was nevertheless nice to meet you and have a nice day.

Chemistry. Didn't have it. Not more complicated than that. Move along.
[–]heretogetbetter -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You are blowing this out of proportion. Worse that happens is that the police come over and then it is a he said she said scenario and they can't pin anything on you.
Also, never ever talk to the cops. It can only get you in trouble. If you have to say anything say "I'm not saying anything until my lawyer is present."
[–]TheXXL-2 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Next time let her call the cops. What can happen? She will not call them anyways, and when she does, you don't need to stick around, also, i don't know where this took place, but i am very sure that talking to another person is nothing you will get in jail for, so just call the bluff and amuse yourself.
