The fact you say you aren't ready now but might be in two months makes me think your concerns have nothing to do with age and are more emotional in nature. Could you elaborate on what made you say that?

I’m 31 and just now pregnant with our first child. I also met my husband at 24 and if I could go back and redo it, I’d have children much earlier. The stress over fertility and just simply the energy level of 24 vs 31 is night and day. If you are financially capable, married and already have that motherly instinct-I’d strongly consider trying sooner rather than later. Maybe examine some of the fears that are holding you back and expand on those. I can imagine that they will be the same fears you will have in 3 months and in 3 years.

Having children is one of those cliffs that looks quite scary when you’re still standing on the edge, but when you finally make the leap with your spouse, it will all make sense. You’ll feel more in your element than you believe you would.

I had my twins at 33 and their brothers at 35 and 36. I got married at 19 and divorced at 23, so that derailed my life a bit. I don't regret my decisions, but I'd like to see my own kids have their children in their mid-late twenties. What I was doing between 23 and 27 (when I met my husband) could have been done between 18 and 22, had I made different choices.

Make sure you travel everywhere first before you get pregnant. At least where you desire to always have gone. I left the country a few times.

I’m team, have kids as soon as physically and financially feasible. But even if finances aren’t perfect, it doesn’t matter. It’ll work itself out.

There’s never a “good time” to have kids. If you wait for the perfect time, you’ll never have them.

I wish I met a man at 24 who was eager to have kids. Nobody when I was that age was ready, even with dating older, and I would’ve loved that so much.

Get your body ready so you can minimize the risk of birth defects and pregnancy challenges (he should be doing the same) and everything will work itself out. Lean into your man if you’re scared and needing help with keeping the faith.

There IS no good age to have kids. You will never quite feel financially secure enough. The right time is now. Do they make life harder? Yes. But they also make life eminently better and more fulfilled. And the longer you wait, the harder they are to have (and raise).

babysit for a year, start therapy now, and wait a year before you start trying for kids.

at first youre going to love babysitting, but after a few months, all your trauma will resurface. babysitting will also help you figure out if you have the same parenting style as your parents.

you also need to find out why your parents became drug addicts. did something happen to them, or was it their way of dealing with daily stress? what are you going to do if you encounter the same stressors?

Here's my two cents as a woman who was raised by a single mother and had a difficult childhood.

Do not have kids unless you TRULY want them with all your heart. While my childhood was chaotic, I always knew that my mother wanted me and that she loved me. Don't have kids just because of society or because it "the next thing to do." Its not just 18 years, its for the rest of your life. I am 20 and live away from home, and talk to my mother on the phone nearly every day. Her and I went through a lot in order to get to where we are now (including a period of no-contact after a lot of fights) but through it all, she was always there for me and did not hold our disagreements against me. The most important thing that she ever did for me is that she always made time for me, no matter what.

There is no perfect age to have kids, but this is my biggest advice for successful parenting. I know someone in her 40's who was a teen mom and did an amazing job with raising her child, and I know another woman who had her child in her 30's and was an unfit mother.

All else being equal, I think the first child should be born by maternal age 25. It's best for your body, the outcomes of the pregnancy and the long term effect on your fertility and health. However, life circumstances are very important. Many factors play a role in the decision to start having kids, but the most important thing, in my opinion, is to have children with a father who will stick around. Above all other factors, like financial, how in love you are, how prepared you feel to be a parent, etc, whether or not the father is in it for the long haul is the paramount priority.
