So I'm in Washington too. We had no shared assets as I basically let her the whatever she wanted from the apartment to her mom's house. Here's how my 2021 divorce went from my side. 1) she got the paperwork from the courthouse and I had to sign a few items and I went with her to get it notarized. 2) One person has to go in and file, there like one more piece of paperwork that you can sign saying you both agree to everything and whether or not the non-filing person wants updates. I signed and said I didn't want to contest anything 3) she had a couple of court dates but I didn't have to do anything.

It wasn't until I looked up online this past February, 2 years after the divorce that I checked anything online to make sure I was fully divorced. I just wanted it done and over, and it was.

Yep, did it in Missouri. But ours was $900 because the lawyer did everything.

Can you agree to everything over a coffee table? If so, go for it. Though I'm not sure what the online service is for. If it's going to be easy, you should be able to download the paperwork, fill it out, submit to court. Then if you have everything right, a judge, most likely a magistrate, will sign off on it and make it offical.

If you have kids, get that parenting plan down and signed by a judge. Could come back to haunt you if you don’t.

I just went through this exact situation myself, but from my understanding the process varies a bit by state. I’m in Utah, and for me it went like this:

Ex found the portal on utah.gov that generates the forms for the “initiant” filing, filled out all the details on division of assets (like you, we had no kids or property, so dividing our shared savings account was the only major thing, luckily). She signed these documents and handed the computer over to me.
I signed the same documents — we had already agreed on how we’d do this in advance.
She emailed those docs to the address listed on the government portal.
Waited for a few weeks and didn’t hear anything, so got curious and looked into what was supposed to happen next. Turns out, regardless of whether you’re both in agreement, you have to file a “respondent’s” set of documents that essentially say the exact same thing as the first set.
Literally copied and pasted everything from the “initiant” docs to the “respondent” docs, and emailed them to the same address as before.
Utah has this lovely “mandatory 30-day waiting period” after everything’s been submitted, just to make absolutely sure you want to go through with this… 🤦🏻‍♂️ So, nothing happened for a month.
Finally got a response from the judge’s office saying it was finalized.

So as far as your question about paying for online services goes… honestly just depends on your financial situation, IMO. The legal system is a real pain in the ass for average citizens, so if you can afford it, $160 may be worth it for the convenience. But it isn’t necessary by any means, if you’re truly already in agreement with your ex about everything.

I was on the path for the same. I met my STBX at Notary two weeks ago. She was immediately belligerent and guess what - she had brought her boyfriend along !! This is the boyfriend she met before filing for divorce and the one she currently lives with. That did not go well and I walked out….

My ex and I did it ourselves with the help from an attorney to review the paperwork before filing. Filed on April and finalized in June.

If you can do it yourselves do it. It might take a lawyer to review and submit but you can save a ton as long as there is no fighting over dish rags and furniture

I did, we both filed at the court house and after the 90 days they sent the signed decree in the mail, don’t even have to go to court, I think I paid like $250 for the fee

Yes, You should go as fast as you can through it and be done with it. Then take it out of park into first and drop the hammer.

I'm in CA and in the process of using an online service for an amicable, uncontested divorce. The total cost is about $1200 including the court fees. Highly recommend taking this path even if you need to give up a little more than your fair share. It's totally worth not involving attorneys and the stress that comes with all of that. Best of luck!

I did for my first divorce. Typed up a fair split of everything, got it notarized, and submitted with the petition. Official less than 3 months later

Totally. And I'm glad this is an option for you. I got a professional divorce paralegal to draw up and file the papers. Everything split according to our plan. I believe the total bill with the court fees was around $300.
