Theoretically a 4yo can wrap a curtain around their neck or get some small toy into their airduct or find some other danger around the house; some of the dangers are quiet. So generally it's unadvisable to leave small kids unattended.

That said, even when I'm home with my kid alone, I may step to another room to work on laundry, or cook in the kitchen, so...

I don't think actual danger was that high, with you at home. In a similar situation though I always get (and give) a warning.

It sounds like she just went next door while the kid was occupied and an adult was home if there had been an emergency.

Doesn't sound too bad but I'd have been annoyed not to be told it was happening. My danger radar runs at a different level when I'm tagged in.

Talk to me when the ex left home to meet the boyfriend while the AC is broke on the 3rd of July and it's 93 degrees in the house, there's nothing cold to drink in the fridge and 4 kids at home. That's borderline abuse. Maybe a CPS case.

I go outside (to get the mail or trash to dumpster) for 5-10 minutes and leave my kid in the apartment, even when he was 5-ish. It depends on the kid, some will sit there and stare at the TV while others will immediately grab the kitchen knives. Considering you were there, the only problem that I see is that she didn't inform you. Not sure how easy it would be to leave a meeting on your part, but my guess is if your kid was in trouble you could step away.

Total time away? I can excuse a literal 3-5 minute run downstairs. It’s no diff than changing the laundry, for instance.
