Any male subreddit like Askmenadvice and any advice on looks subreddits like Howtolooksmax are full of these sorts of people. You can barely read any legitimate male opinion or any criticism towards women anymore.

First off, sorry for your loss.

One of the biggest issues with any group with gender or sexuality somehow at its core (and that includes both feminism and men's rights, yes) is that when humans tie a group into their identity, they tend to handle criticism of that group with all the grace of an epileptic giraffe.

The most intense form of this is seen in cults, which is why "cult deprogramming" is a whole thing, but the principles used in that practice can be applied much more broadly.

Basically, if you criticize something integral to a person's identity, people are highly likely to get defensive immediately. That's not just "defensive of their position," it's a psychological state--the brain will simply refuse to actually consider if the criticism is valid.

It's like leading a horse to water and find that it responds to any attempt to make it drink as if it's being waterboarded. You have to give it the means to drink, and wait for it to do so on its own.

Applying this to your experience: You tried to be nice and kind, but you were also (understandably) very upset. I'm willing to bet they saw your post as blaming lesbians as a whole and accusing all lesbians of being hateful and toxic. At that point, no amount of apologizing for coming off aggressively will help. The response you got, at least, isn't really a lesbian thing, just a human thing.

That is really sad to hear about your friend. No one deserved this kind of treatment, and bullying on this scale should have consequences. But keep in mind that this sub is not for complaining about how other subs treat people with bans and such. It is a sub dedicated to talking about the rights of men.

I do understand that your post probably triggered the mods and assumed things about you, which turned out to be unfavourable.

But I imagine a board negative assumption of their group was the deciding factor here. And they just assumed it to be misogyny.

But please keep in mind that many members of this sub deal with this problem all the time, but the sub is about discussing the problems, and not to 'put down' other groups.

If you want to have a discussion about how your friend was treated, I believe many here would gladly read it and sympathise with you and your friend. It is a truly sad story and I wish you and your friends family the best.

People can get riled up over the most trivial things. People also often forget (especially online) that some people may be struggling with mental health and other issues, and so how you treat them can actually impact them.

I'm sorry about your friend. I've seen how male suicide has been trivialised or swept under the rug, along with male mental health and loneliness. It's not just lesbian women who treat men with so much disdain. Plenty of women who for some reason complain about dating men or who are in relationships with men, hate men at the same time, and I struggle to understand the logic (as if there is any) behind it.

BTW, I recall watching a video by a young lesbian woman who actually called out the hatred of men by straight women, so there's that.

You may not like my answer, but perhaps you can own what you can here so that a future interaction might go better for you, if you were actually looking for helpful information in your attempted post on their sub, and not just leaping in there looking for a self-justifying outcome:

Your grave mistake was aggressively taking your personal pain out on complete strangers simply because they belong to the same broad identity group as your friend's harassers—Do you see how that can be a problem, taking an entire broad population and attributing negative character traits to the whole—traits so negative, in fact, that they led to your friend's ending? You used "you" when addressing the sub, as though the people who would read your post were responsible in spirit for your friend's fate; an implicit wording which assumed that they were of the same mindset as your friend's harassers, and that they would have also verbally coaxed your friend to his fate if they had the chance.

So, with that in mind, I ask: what productive goal were you hoping for there? You were strutting in with a chip already on your shoulder, addressing them in a non-charitable way, already expecting them to be unfair to you. This is, by definition, prejudgement / prejudice. Reddit is already a difficult place to have folks address a point calmly, reasonably, and without bias. You made their “expected” Redditor reflex of being uncharitable to you very easy. You even doubled down in your ban reply. You went in prejudiced, proved yourself right by self-sabotage, and then burned your bridge behind you by showing that you had your mind made up all along. Any valid points you may have had to discuss were diluted by your uncharitable preconceptions that you would be addressing monsters. And with that in mind, can you see that that very quality (contemptuous, uncharitable preconceptions) is what you were, apparently, charging into that sub to battle against?

I am truly sorry for your loss. I really am. If men as a monolith deserve charity, understanding, and grace, then so do lesbians as a monolith. Otherwise, we are just spreading more mean-spirited prejudice, and the valid fight is to see it as the gruesome quality that it is and remove it from ourselves. Choose not to pay hate forward recursively.

Not to invalidate your experience, but in my life, lesbians have generally been more understanding of and empathetic toward men than the average person is. I think many spaces are built around political identity and fall into these sort of gender-hating traps like what happened with the people harassing your friend. People who keep themselves separate from those toxic environments tend to be much more sane and less man-hatey.
