The criminal “justice” system is extremely sexist, extremely racist, and extremely classist. No other system locks up as many of its own people. Most Americans don’t trust it, nor should they.

The problem with stats like this is that the race part will be the story to many people and not the gender part because it doesn’t fit the narrative. The race part does matter and I’m not minimizing that but stats that benefit men as a group usually don’t get much traction

In the UK black defendants are significantly more likely to receive custodial sentences than white defendants. Black people are 3.1% of the UK population but around 12% of the prison population. Women of all ethnicities receive custodial sentences at far lower rates than men — around 5% of the prison population is female.

The usual problem with data like this is that there’s an assumption that every group commits crimes under the exact same circumstances. Do you really expect the same punishment for person 1, who kills someone with his hands in a bar fight where the victim provoked him, and person 2, who shoots dead a child during a gang fight and has 5 previous violent felonies. The fact they get convicted of the same crime doesn’t mean they should get the same sentence.

I don’t exclude the possibility of bias, there are other ways it can be shown to exist, but the kind of data in the OP is grossly misrepresenting the reality.

To be fair, it's the same crime but it's not usually the guys first time doing it. Criminal history impacts your sentence.
