I think the story goes that basically because Medusa was raped in Zeus's temple she was considered to have desecrated it and the rest of the gods expected her to be punished.
Athena couldn't refuse but Medusa was one of her priestesses so she tried to give her a gift whilst not obviously going against utter wanker Zeus.

I thought she was trying to prorect medusa? By transforming her into something to protect herself with. To scare and punish men for what they have done to her. Also messed up how men changed the story here also. To hide what they truly are. Sad they are still at it after all this time.

It's mythology. They are the stories of the culture at the time. The whole story is something that a patriarchal society would create: "if a woman doesn't wanna get raped then she shoulda been ugly"

In most cases they are and it's not wrong. The rape theory is just a branch of it, though it appears here and there, especially in symbolism. For example, in the game "Rule of the rose", you can find a boss called "mermaid princess" which is a girl that's been sexually abused and wished to become a mermaid for above mentioned reason.
