I've been thinking this for a while but after seeing this linked in another post: http://archive.is/4J3oQ - I decided to get on with it.
Recipes are directions. Instructions. Orders.
No wonder the greatest chefs are men.
I was the child of a June and Ward Cleaver type unit, where mom did all of the cooking. She was a hell of a good cook. There was lots of codependent dysfunction but the 1950's division of labor is what it looked like on the outside. My mother passed away several years a ago and my father is now capable of only slightly better than microwave dinners and eating out of store bought containers with a fork. This is an area where I don't want to be like dad.
As a teenager, the fictional private detective Spenser, created by Robert B Parker, was one of my few positive male role models. He had a serious girlfriend whom he never married and refused to move in with. He also lifted weights. There are many RP traits in his lifestyle. I didn't pay heed to many of them but did manage to avoid marriage until my 30's. Spenser also knew how to cook. Well.
Several months ago, having recently unplugged, I wanted to reduce the household food budget. I also wanted to stop eating shit food and be healthier. I knew enough to STFU about these goals' motives else risk making success more difficult...
In my experience:
Telling a woman what you want to do can have the same effect as asking her to stand in the way.
Disclaimer: this may be the result of my prior failings at leadership but time will tell.
I had also read about "alpha provider" behaviors, and as often, slightly ahead of myself, I decided to learn cooking. Well. Like my childhood role model Spenser.
My first attempt was fillet mignon with rosemary. If you've never cooked before, don't start with this. I did ok, a bit too well done but I set the smoke alarms off searing the tenderloins. I handled the aftermath by ignoring her yelling that we were never going to cook again, STFU, unplugged the alarms and put them under a pillow and got back to the task. An amusing memory now.
Another time after cooking, I failed a shit test and lost frame when she incorrectly said that it would be cheaper to go out. Proper response would have been to kindly say: the receipt is right here honey, do you want to do the math?
Utter autonomy was always a goal of mine and despite that it's a illusion, I enjoy inching closer to infinity. I've found that living my life as if I were single is the underlying solution to covert contracts. Sure I can identify the covert contracts, and stop specific instances or behaviors but a change in mindset is what I was lacking - live as though you were single.
Below is some information I share for any man or FNG who wishes to become a household quality chef and move closer to autonomous infinity.
Feminism dictates that women should be ashamed of keeping good food on the table and that's fine because like many things, men are better at cooking anyway.
Where to get supplies: Discount department stores (think Marshalls) have most of the stuff you need for dirt cheap. Do not go to some luxury place at the mall. I needed to supplement the kitchen with theses items:
-Cast Iron Skillet (swordfish, chicken etc) -Stackable bowls for prepping -Dutch Oven (great for tomato sauce) -Oven ready grill plate (vegetables) -Utensils spatulas etc
-Tupperware for leftovers
Amazon can fill in some gaps here: -Chefs knife (Amazon) -Pairing knife (Amazon) -Cutting board (Amazon)
Where to find recipes: Food Network has great recipes online that are printable. Print them out. Do not try to use your phone because your fingers will get wet while cooking and your phone will then not unlock. The navigation on Food Network is not great but when you dig into categories you'll find many things that look tasty and can save them or create shopping lists etc.
I have now made a routine of cooking. Tuesday nights I cook something simple. Friday nights I cook a 3 course dinner. Sunday mornings I cook breakfast.
As covertly as possible, I made it clear that indeed I was not cooking "for" her. I was cooking for me and she was a beneficiary. Knowing how to cook good food has not only improved the quality of my life but also my value as a man. Once the woman realized I wasn't just putting on a show, and her suspicion was caused by my prior beta-ization, she is now immensely happy about it, yet her happiness is not and never was my motivation, just an added benefit.
Much respect to MRP.
