My son is 7 years old. He's popular. He's tall, according to growth statistic graphs he's going to end up 6'4 and he's from January). He's athletic, doing both soccer (the national sport here) and especially judo which he has done for 4 years, he's competing at high level and recently got moved up a bracket because there's no competition for him in his age group, and he regularly wins against experienced fighters 1-2 years older than him.

But there's this kid in his class who is also a big kid and very physical, and he's got some rage issues. They play together but when someone sets this kid off he just begins kicking and punching.

My son is good kid. He says he's not allowed to use judo outside of the dojo, the teachers say you can't fight back, they other kid will get hurt if he throws him on the asphalt, blah blah. That's part of it, and the other part is probably that this other kid is just more psycho. So often my son ends up taking it.

If my son committed to fighting him, I'm 100% sure he'd win the vast majority of times. I'm encouraging him to stand up to him, and telling him that against bullies you have to get them to respect you and make them scared of fighting you. But so far it seems it isn't working.

This weekend he was at that kids birthday, and when my wife picked him up he was in a corner crying because he'd been beaten (and this kid's divorced POS parents weren't doing anything about it).

I've begun teaching him to punch properly and how to do a muai thai clinch and knee the guy in solar plexus and perhaps a few more tools will help, but maybe he needs some more encouragement? Does anyone have some good pointers on this? Could the disappointed dad help, or toughen him up with some mock fights where I pressure him until he fights back hard?

Any help is welcome.

Regarding getting in trouble with the school, that's a non issue. There are other classes with problems A LOT worse and nothing happens to the offenders (choke holds, getting pushed down stairs, threatening with thumb tacks).
