The cliche happy husband and wife living together in harmony, but I feel like my dreams have been shattered.

Dreams. She wanted to be married, to whom did mot matter. I wonder if she subscribes to traditional marriage roles?

edit

There's no way to fix that. You will be very, very sorry you wasted your pretty years with a man who doesn't want to legally commit to you.

My favorite comment. Ah the pretty years, ironically this is being said to a 30+ woman.

Legally commit to you

So romantic. Definitely marriage material.

[–]_Dog-32 points33 points34 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Now lets learn.

If you’re female and were like many girls, your friends were everything to you. You talked on the phone for hours, chatting passionately about who sat next to whom in the lunchroom, whether you liked Joanne’s new haircut, or making detailed plans about who to invite to your birthday party. You likely also spent a bunch of time planning your life – what your wedding would be like, what kind of dress you would wear, what kind of house you wanted, how many kids you were going to have (two boys and two girls) and what their names would be. Your future life as a mother and a wife was the stuff of dreams.

But how about if you were a boy? At 12, were you spending your evenings with your ear glued to the phone chatting with your friend about the goings on of everyone in class? Were you profoundly interested in what Matt wore to school that day? Did you really want to dissect in detail what Bob meant when he didn’t sit next to you at lunch? Did you really care? And were you dreaming about your future life as a husband and father, exploring ad nauseum with your buddy whether Charlotte is a nicer name for your future daughter than Emma?

Women go into marriage for the marriage. Men go into marriage for the woman.

Trp is about recognizing truths right? We cannot be mad when we know where their actions and thought processes are coming from.

...but the institution of marriage was not what was keeping him there. It’s his wife that he wants.

...Women who are being left don’t get this

Men are the true romantics

She's not aware she's going to hit the Wall so soon, still her guts are telling her "just hurry up getting fucking married". She knows why deep inside herself.

[–]Styrm[S] 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I sometimes wonder if the wanting or fantasy with women to get married is a biological instinct in females instead of media induced craving.

A small boy exposed to fairy tales, same as small girls with happy marriage ending, isn't excited by the aspect of marriage. Instead, he dreams of being a knight in shining armor who's there to save the damsel in distress.

It conforms to the traditional views of male as a provider and aligns with the theory of women having a biological instinct to find a provider. The acknowledgement and status she gets from marriage is just society pushing her to get/stay married and controls their hypergamy. It also has men settle down with one woman.

[–]1kick68 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't think so. I think men just play the long game so when we think of getting married, we think of the "until death do us part" portion. When women think of getting married, they're short gamers, and what they're talking about is the brideparty aka wedding.

What woman WOULDN'T want an entire fucking day devoted to her and how beautiful she looks captured in video and thousands of photos, complete with an assload of gifts?

So in the future, when a woman says "I want to get married" just translate that to mean "I want a 6-figure me-party and a pretty dress."

Let's get married, we have True LoveTM , but only if you sign this contract! Otherwise our love means nothing and I'm going to leave you for someone else to coerce into signing it. You're disposable, after all.

[–]ExpendableOne7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

The really ridiculous thing about it is that he didn't say he didn't want to commit to her, he just said he didn't want to get married. She could still live that "cliché happy boy and girl living together in harmony" dream if she wanted to, the only things that would be different is the "titles"(they could still call each other husband and wife if they wanted to), the legal status and the customary jewellery(which they could still wear if they wanted to). Women who cannot disassociate marriage from commitment are really screwing themselves over(or screwing other women over, as demonstrated by the onslaught of negative comments in that thread), and demonstrating just how shallow/superficial, selfish and entitled their views of love and relationships actually are.

If your dream is this but you're willing to throw it all away because it looks like this, you should seriously reconsider your priorities.

The financial reasons are complete bullshit if she works too, cause that combined income kicks you into a higher tax bracket so you end up paying MORE in taxes. Not to mention the disturbing assumptions given to women that give them ALL the control. It's a no win scenario.

They also seem unaware of the high probability of divorce or that they don't consider it. "Thats not romantic", well neither is spending years of your life going through divorce proceedings and losing your house.

On the flip side, if you both make about the same amount of money you will pay more taxes if you get married (filing jointly or not). That's what people mean when they talk about the "marriage tax".

[–]1kick67 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

The stats also show that a married man earns more. They love to point to this, and say there's a glass ceiling in the corporate world for single men because of this., BUT

  • the stigma about single men and corporate loyalty has all been shattered because there's simply no corporate loyalty anymore. Nobody is in it for the long haul with one company.

  • people have started to realize that while a married man might earn more, it doesn't make him reach. He earns more because he has to in order to support a family. So a single man on $100,000 is richer than a married man with 2 kids on $200,00 because in the family scenario $175,000 goes to pay for dependents.

[–]Workchoices1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And once they divorce, she takes the house and half of all assets and the kids, he gets stuck with all the debt, half his income as child support and half of what's left as alimony.

In the end he makes much less than the single man.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Exactly this, I think you may even want to tone it down further. A lot of the things women want men don't, the holidays, the status symbol homes, the status symbol suvs etc. The reason men are poor when on low wages is because the pure amount of money that these kids and partner take up.

I actually think that most men who are single on $50,000 would live more comfortably than married men on $150,000. That income doesn't go all that far when you are supporting a wife and two kids almost entirely.

[–]1independentmale0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is so true.

When I was married, we lived paycheck to paycheck on my 6 figure salary. There never seemed to be enough money to go around.

My divorce cost me a nearly $1400/mo child support payment. My new status as a single man cost me another $1000/mo in taxes. From inside the marriage, I thought for sure I would lose the house and go bankrupt. There was no way in hell I could find another $2400/mo in the budget.

As it turns out, not only am I able to pay that, after my bills are all paid I still have a cool grand left over every month with nowhere to go. How? Well, for one, I no longer have a woman on my bank account. All the money she blew on herself every month stays put now. Second, my bills were lowered dramatically. Car insurance halved without her car. Electricity halved without her here to do stupid shit like run the AC too low and then open the goddamn windows when she gets cold (yes, really, we fought about it frequently). She was spending $800/mo on groceries, I'm spending $250 and still eating like a king. The list goes on.

TL;DR: Women are expensive as fuck. Especially when they don't earn it and don't understand the value of a dollar.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not that married men earn more. It is that those who earn more marry more often. Women avoid marrying little earning guys.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

An easier realization is that women are less willing to marry a man who earns less.

The marriage doesn't cause the salary, the salary provides the opportunity for marriage.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Or married men are more willing to take jobs they don't want and work hours they wouldn't work as a single guy.

Either way, this isn't something you can point to and call a benefit of marriage.

[–]watersign0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

exactly. a single guy with no debts and making a solid 60K-100K has nothing to complain about. the world is his oyster

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The truly baffling response I got from someone who was on this topic was:

"Its what you're supposed to do."

I'm amazed at how deep rooted BP ideologies are in people.

[–]eugene_goldfarb0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, that seems like an acceptable response to me if you're living in a sane legal and cultural environment. So it's also the response I would expect from someone who hasn't considered the problems with what marriage means in the 21st century (and hasn't been burned by marriage either).

That doesn't mean it's the right answer, but it's not exactly baffling either.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It gets worse and worse the further up the pay packet you go. You actually hear women defending that they are entitled to the huge sums of money in some of those celebrity divorces. So they were married for 10 years, contributed very little to the income and walk away with tens of millions of dollars? Sign me up.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Just write pre marriage agreement on everything, so in case of divorce or anything she wouldn't get anything from you. If she doesn't want to agree, it's clear what she wants.

[–]trajanconquers8932 points33 points34 points 11 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

This woman is unfortunately a casualty in the cultural war that is tearing our society apart. The institution of marriage is being broken down by feminists, legislators, the court system, and corporations (single, childless women make for better workers, who spend more on consumer goods).

Marriage nowadays has become such a raw deal for most men that avoiding it has become an increasingly logical choice. I feel bad for the good women who want to live up to their traditional roles but can't b/c of the environment that 100+ years of feminism has created.

[–]Senior Contributorexit_sandman18 points19 points20 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This woman is unfortunately a causality

I wouldn't say "unfortunately", since this assumes that she is one of those who won't abuse the tools handed to her by the law to screw her partner over somewhere down the road.

Okay, she had bad luck insofar as she was willing to settle down with a guy she met at 24 and stayed with him too long, but considering that her current relationship is only 1 year old, it's safe to assume that there's at least some settling going on. And we know the side effects of settling.

[–]1oldredder1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Depends on what corporation you are. If you're Toys R Us you very badly want those women making babies. The single ones may make the best employees for availability but you have to know the source of your customers/demand.

lol, it's a classic case of "oh, but I'll change him," then 6 years later she realizes she fucked up. Props to boyfriends #1 and 2.

[–]JustReward9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And that's when she "accidentally" gets pregnant. Oops! Time to get married for our child's sake, honey.

Having to rationalize away that immoral behavior would be easy compared to breaking up and having to start the marriage courtship dance all over again. It's for the best. He just needed a little push. He'll come around. He didn't know what he wanted. Family is more important than what he wanted. He was being selfish. Etc., etc.

[–]TheIronViking7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This. They think they'll convince you otherwise as time goes on. They bank on you not being able to do better and settling down out of desperation. They play a dangerous game because running the cloak out (as a woman) can horrendously backfire. They'd be better suited moving on quickly after hearing the man has no marriage plans. I think it runs contradictory to her ego that there is a man in front of her who she can't "have."

[–]Fallout992 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I like this running the clock out analogy. Like Peyton Manning taking a knee with 30 seconds left, fumbling the ball and the defense returning it for the game winning touchdown.

Her reddit post is like the post game interview, "we came out and played well but didn't execute when we needed to."

BTW i'm glad that footballs back.

oh even better - I dated a girl for FIVE years who told me in years 1 through 4 that she did not want to get married.

Guess what she suddenly wanted in year five and was completely heartbroken when she found I didn't want it?

[–]1independentmale1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago [recovered] (0 children) | Copy Link

I hooked up with my current LTR while my ex wife was suing me. I was very vocal about never marrying again. She agreed, said she has never wanted marriage, ever.

Not even a month after my divorce was final she started talking about marriage. ಠ_ಠ

[–]Vioret 26 points26 points26 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I love how she blatantly says she doesn't care who she is married to so long as she is married.

[–]1neveragoodtime26 points27 points28 points 11 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Marriage is more important than the relationship. Or the man. What is marriage but a legal contract that commits his resources to her? She doesn't mention religious marriage, only the legal commitment. Any girl who pushes marriage is only after money, cloaked in traditional romantic BS. Think about why only a man asks a woman to marry him. Because it's his resources at risk. A woman asking is just saying Gimme!

[–]Endorsed ContributorrebuildingMyself1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You can say this about her relationships even before marriage. It's all about status, validation, and eventually marriage.

Men are the true romantics

[–]1wakethfkupneo21 points22 points23 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

So men are finally starting to get it. The trend is spreading. Recently I stumbled upon some thread on Quora (IIRC) about feminism being possible cause for skyrocketing divorce rates - the answers were as you would expect and someone even showed the graph proving that the number of divorces is actually going down. And it's true, however on the graph there was also a line showing that the number of marriages was also going down and when you plug in the numbers (marriages #s going down faster than divorce #s combined with population #s going up) you get totally different picture.

In b4 bachelor tax <- I do actually mean it, no joke. Think it's stupid/impossible/'no way in hell'? So was today's feminism 50 years ago.

[–]2RedPill4LYF4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

So what do we do? Roll over? Seems like the way things are now there's nothing stopping that from happening at any time.

[–]SgtBrutalisk4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You save yourself. Sounds brutal, but it's the only thing you can do.

[–]1wakethfkupneo3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The sad part is you can't do anything. Many here have tried to enlighten their unplugged friends and came back here to rant. It's just doesn't work. Even with people you are close with. And now imagine trying the same on global level. You don't even have to imagine, we all know how much we are popular here on reddit.

So, if you can't educate them, you can only sit and watch the whole system to become soooo rotten that in one point there will be revolution. That's what history thought us over and over. But ... there's the caveat: in order to have The Revolution you'll need Men (with capital M). And what's happening to all the men during the process? They are losing Testosterone on average 1% every year (first link that comes to mind - http://boldanddetermined.com/2012/08/19/low-testosterone-levels/). One fucking percent per year! What evolution intended to be a Bull is now rapidly becoming an Ox. I have a theory that the whole feminism crap started to take traction the moment T levels started to drop thanks to all the 'goodies' of modern world. Can you imagine one day, just one, in your modern life without touching anything made of plastic (let alone toothpaste, shampoo and food fucked up with hormones)? There sure will be Men willing to lead, but as for critical mass - I wouldn't bet on it.

And they won't stop with this, as it is now. Hypergamy Solipsism will shamelessly keep pushing for more, inch by inch no matter how ridiculous, the only question being "When?".

[–]Fallout992 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

For the bachelor tax you have to realize that when it happens it will happen under the radar. Where most people won't even know it's happening. Take inflation for instance, it is often called the cruelest of taxes. This is because it devalues your money and you have no means to vote on it and have the federal reserve acting unilaterally.

[–]VarsitySlutTeamCpt10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well if he doesn't want to get married then he isn't going to get married.

This girl thinks that instead of him not wanting marriage, she's thinking how can I get him to marry me.

[–]WillClickOnAnything11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She's probably poking holes in condoms as we speak.

[–]2RedPill4LYF1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It has absolutely nothing to do with loving you as a person when marriage is all they want or they walk. It's really that simple. That's not love, it's coercion.

[–]thebears198611 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This girl is in a rough spot. Any new boyfriend is going to think, "What did the guy who dated you for 6 years know that I don't?"

[–]1doubleecho889 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I often wonder what women today would think if you told them you wouldn't want to get legally married, but you'd still do the wedding (simple gathering) and non legally binding vows in a ceremony. You can even take it a step further and go on vacation after (honeymoon). Would they still accept that or do they need validation from the government that it's real?

My guess is that it still wouldn't be good enough if it wasn't "official". As if a legal document makes you love someone more. How's that for romance?

[–]rp_divorced11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Here's what she would say about that...

"I need to be legally married because I'm giving my life and time to just him and I need to know he isn't going to leave whenever he doesn't want to be with me anymore. I'm not going to spend my best years with someone without knowing that he feels the same way." (because the paper certainly means that he feels the same way)

Which obviously translates to "I need the legal ability to divorce rape him if he isn't the husband I thought he'd be because I'm sure as hell jumping ship the first chance I get if I think I can do better."

[–]1raceAround1264 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I proposed this exact thing with my ex.

I didn't want to get married because, deep down, I knew something was fucked up with the relationship. I didn't know what as I was still utterly beta. Maybe it was, at that point, the 5 years of dead bedroom that had gotten to me finally?

SO I said exactly that. Let's have the party, the whole thing, just skip the registry bit.

What came out was a six month argument. Me vs Her, my Mom, her Mom, her Sister and several of our friends. Comments that I was out of order, I was playing with peoples' feelings and that I should man up. Even my Mom calling me, telling me that it was a terrible thing to even suggest and that I was showing myself to have no feelings etc.

Yep, insults, shaming, you name it.

I'd heavily advise you don't make a similar mistake!

[–]boscoist0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

What you can't tell us the rest of the story? we know how it ends but come on man!

[–]1raceAround1260 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Nothing more to say... I just had the piss ripped out of me in various was over the six months it took to die down. And in fairness, my idea never really was allowed to "go away".

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I think that would still be official as a common law marriage

[–]GC0W302 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In most US states there is no such thing, but I'd still check with a lawyer before I was involved.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, you need to be careful, depending on where you live. If you're Canadian and don't live in Quebec, then common law is a very real possibility.

[–]3 Endorsed ContributorF9R9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

"Men on Strike" by Dr. Helen Smith explains all of this perfectly.

[–]1doubleecho882 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Recently bought and read it. 8 years too late but read it nonetheless.

It won't have near the effect it should until women start reading it, and reading it again. However that probably won't happen until marriage rates drop dramatically and women wonder why.

[–]hashtagpound2point28 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Now more singles in US than married people, first time ever

This is on the front page right now, and I think it's an early indication that marriage in the states is going to become quite rare. It's not going to get any better. The average wage vs today's cost of living isn't going to help, these scary divorce settlements that we see in the news isn't going to help, today's dating game is a fucking app. US marriage is doomed.

"because of the state of our legal system (in the USA), marriage is completely off the table for him until it's fixed"

This guy may or may not be RP but I gotta respect how up-front he is.

I am heartbroken and I feel like our relationship is doomed now. Marriage for me is all I've really ever wanted.

How can someone actually write that and not understand how stupid they sound?

How can someone grow up watching Disney propaganda and receive endless gynocentric perspectives, no phallic-centric perspectives, and NOT be that stupid?

"Cinderellas Castle"

It was the Princes family castle. Cinderella didn't do jack shit to earn it other than spreading her legs.

It's truly sickening to read. Boyfriends 1 and 2 could have been perfect. They could have been totally shitty. We don't know.

Why? This woman doesn't even talk about the two boyfriends outside of the fact they didn't want to get married. Because this woman is only concerned with the validation of being married. She doesn't care who too, ergo she never cared about about them. She only cared about the fact they could drop 20k on a wedding and a ring. When that was off the table she bolts.

Its as horrific as it is depressing.

Apart from the usual "you deserve better"-bullshit, I find it interesting that her supporters pretty much expect any guy to throw themselves at the feet of the woman, being elated to be allowed to marry her despite knowing her for far too few years to actually be able to make an informed decision about it.

I mean, seriously? One year and he should totally and utterly trust her? As if relationships got frozen in their honeymoon phase and never hit a rough patch or broke down for good. A friend of mine had an LTR with a young woman who seemed to be a freakin' catch in the beginning: level-headed, affectionate, hard working, mutually attracted etc. (and, because this little detail tends to get overrated here quite a lot: she was a virgin as well, and he was her first serious boyfriend). One year into their relationship, everything looked fine, but 5 years later, she was constantly emotionally abusing him, blackmailing him, disrespecting him, withholding sex (three times during their last 12 months together, yay) and what not. And had they been married at that point and had they stayed together, I'm fairly positive that she would also have had little qualms about totally fucking him over in case of divorce had she had the opportunity, considering the amount of resentment (which he didn't deserve, by the way) she had built up over the last years of their relationship. Okay, she has been in her early 20s in the beginning and in her mid-to-late 20s when they broke up for good, so odds are that the situation would have been vastly different had they met 5 years later, but that doesn't change the fact that people and their opinions and affections change over the time a lot, so any banking on the current state of events is extremely careless.

Getting married is a bet on your relationship working out and, if it doesn't, on your partner being considerate enough to not make you suffer as a punishment for you being unable to provide her with the life she thought she deserved.

Honestly even today most guys are willing to marry good looking women if they're high quality so I'm guessing she's a low value fat chick and the guys don't want to buy in on that and I can't blame them

Two comments:

1. Prenups. Prenups are like minimum requirements. A prenup ensures that you the stuff you have before you're married stays yours. It can also potentially save you from spousal support.

However, you can still very easily get screwed in divorce. For starters, prenups are frequently thrown out for a variety of reasons. Second, judges have a lot of room for personal leeway in their rulings. "Well the man has all this inheritance, so I'll award the majority of the marital assetts to the struggling wife." It is also very easy to co-mingle previous assets with new marriage assets, making them up for grabs for divorce proceedings. Example, you have a rough month and your wife makes one payment on your mortgage on a house you owned before marrying, or spends money updating your house. Congratulations, now it can be considered a marital asset. This also ignores the fact that a successful man WILL lose 50% of his earned worth during every year of marriage. Last, the biggest issue with divorce, custody and child support, can 100% not be regulated by a prenup.

2. The whole "men are better after divorce" statistic. I love this one because it's true. 1 year after divorce, I am much better off from my ex. I make $90K a year and am on the road to financial recovery. I'll retire early and am 1,000 times better off than my ex, who is unemployed, broke, and with minimum wage earning potential. So yes, "I am better off than my wife because of divorce." But if you look at the divorce itself, I lost over $150K in assets, fees, and debts. My ex, who never made more than $10 an hour and had no prospects in life, was able to secure $50K in cash, eliminate all of her debts, and get $500/month for the next 15 years. So who really got the better end of that deal? Saying who's better off AFTER divorce doesn't take into account the financial responsibility of both parties. The proper statistic should be, "Who does better DURING and immediately following the divorce." That answer to that would be Women, about 80-90% of the time.

"Who does better DURING and immediately following the divorce." That answer to that would be Women, about 80-90% of the time.

So true. This is a big key as to why marriage is a raw deal. Men are logical and realize that paying money up front to get divorced in order to decrease the long term financial damage is the best way to get out. Unfortunately that means you have several years of financial hardship until you realize the benefit of the deal you made.

Don't put the efforts of your hard work at risk because she got mad that you didn't do enough laundry or give her enough attention and decided to quit the marriage.

How come nobody suggests she just isn't marriage material and has nothing of value to offer a hypothetical husband?

[–]Algermas7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because that's literally impossible to the female mind, every single woman on the planet is entitled to a 1/trillion male specimen solely by virtue of their Golden Uterus and nothing can diminish this.

Not a plethora of STD's, not the 5 children she had by 3 convicted felons, not the 200 dicks she rode during her twenties, not the 90 extra pounds she's carrying and certainly not the fact that she has $200k worth of student loan debt for her Ph.d in mechanical engineering social work.

What a crazy! The act of being legally bonded to another shouldn't be a big deal. Good luck lady, I know I'd never get married in todays legal system, fuck in my state if you live together for like a year you become automatically married, I'm considering playing "address games" to avoid that ever happening.

[–]liljenz00 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Can you elaborate on the address games?

Where you don't legally change your address.

I would link to the Men on Strike book and discussions on youtube etc but I know I would be banned within seconds of clicking save in that sub.

Eventually they will figure it out by themselves.

I went ahead and linked to that book there, before I read your comment. Who knows, maybe someone will read it. One can only hope.

Edit: Hey, right now my comment there is at +3. There may be some hope after all! Praise our lord and savior Dr. Helen Smith!

Top response is a rare example of sense coming from women on the subject of marriage. If you translate it and remove the sugar coating, it's A) evaluate why you're marriage crazy, is it because you actually want to contribute to a household, or do you just want to get support, validation and money?

B) Offer a prenup and basically acknowledge that marriage is a massive financial risk for men (and therefore represent him risking the past 5-10 years of his work and the time he put into earning that money). There is nothing unromantic about not being a gold-digging whore, he will appreciate the gesture and this could ease his concern with marriage.

C) If you are one of those girls who wants a wedding, not a marriage (aka most of them), just go get the ceremony done. If you aren't looking to juice him for $ and have him be legally bound to hold you up to his standard of living, then this gives you all the dorky dream fulfillment that you've been wanting since you started watching Disney.

D) Unlike how you thought it would be, you have to compromise. If marriage gives all the power to the woman, while spinning you as a plate gives all the power to the man, then perhaps try for a solution in the middle of the road. Not all the way towards your side of the spectrum.

I think you both might benefit from disseminating why and why not you would want to get married, because this isn't an all-or-nothing deal. If he's worried about a possible divorce down the road then a prenup could be the solution. And please don't listen to the people saying that worrying about that means he's a bad catch or has doubts about your relationship. He's just pragmatic. As unromantic as it is, sometimes it's just sensible to look at the practical side of things. I've always said that I'd want a prenup when, and if, I ever get married. It's the same reason I've got a will - you might not want to think about it but if you don't plan for it you could eventually cause a lot of problems and anguish that could've been avoided.

Another possibility would be for you to look into why you want to get married. If it's because you want the wedding day or simply be able to call yourself man and wife then maybe a non-official wedding might be an option? If you're both religious then you could look into getting married "before god" but without the legal paperwork.

What I suggested might not look like very good options, but I wouldn't give up on finding a compromise or talking it out. The relationship is the most important thing after all and it sounds like that is going well.

"Honestly, if his main reason for not wanting to get married is that he'll get screwed in the divorce, that's a really sad statement on his view of life"

Yeah what an unfounded view, it's not like 50% of marriages end in divorce and women initiate 70% of them /s

/u/cheetah_swirley is my new RP maths hero. He nailed why the stats are wrong. Although, there are other reasons as well.

Honestly that first comment was pretty solid.

Notice how she completely ignores the fact that she could live with her boyfriend and have a happy family life with him for the rest of their lives without the legal contract of marriage. But she doesn't care about living together and being happy, she only cares about the legal assraping that she can inflict upon him by getting him to sign on the dotted line.

Hey, not-getting-married is a dealbreaker for me I'm not going to bring this up for SIX YEARS then act surprised and break up with you.

You must first be married in order to get divorced. As I never want to get divorced, best not to get married.

This top commenter "timguin"... my god what a meek and mild faggish moniker he's chosen for himself. He is the friendly man penguin there to be a sensitive shoulder for the hamster to cry on.
