There's two sets of beliefs that combine to form the ultimate obnoxious white knight:

The first is a covert and somewhat unconscious belief in old school blue pill gender roles. Where real men protect women from cads and abusers, in order to prove how strong and brave they are.

The second is feminism.

When the covert/unconscious drive to prove what a real man one is by protecting women, meets the overt belief that women are continually oppressed by society at large and that the average man has a lot to learn concerning how to treat women... the end result is a perfect storm of seeing assholes and misogynists around every corner that MUST be combatted.

Buying women stuff isn't "white knighting" lol. The answer to why guys do that is simple: they're hoping they can buy her affection. They see women go for rich guys who spoil them and want to replicate that effect, even though it's fruitless because they're not rich enough for women to forgive a lack of attraction just because of some gifts.

But for actual "white knighting," aka defending a woman when she didn't ask for it, I think guys mostly do it because they feel like it's the right thing to do. It's true that online they gain nothing from it, but irl successfully defending a woman, even verbally, can indeed ingratiate you to her and lead to sex/romance. You still have to have other attractive qualities though, there's no way around that.

I blow money only on women I fuck. Not because I want to "buy her vagina" but because she makes me feel validated, I want to thank her for that and I think women appreciate gifts more than random sex with their partner. Even good sex doesn't stay in their minds for long. A gift is proper way to express that attraction.

They definitely have. A lot of people are susceptible to flattery and idolisation. Most well adjusted people will find it creepy but there are plenty of exceptions around for these men to attract.

White knighting is an attempt to gain access to women by exchanging various aspects of your personal dignity and feigning masculinity (male protectiveness).

In a world where there is no real knowledge of how masculinity or attraction works, plus the fact that women encourage it pretty hard because it benefits them, I actually do not blame white knights for thinking is a sensible strategy.

Basically, because they haven't learned that. They listened to women, and society, over and over, being disgusted with certain male behavior, and thought, "Oh, I'll be the opposite of that. That kinda has to work, right?" And they'll go a loooong time sometimes before realizing it doesn't work that way.

It also might have something to do with idealization of women. Women are those beautiful things you can only hope to earn a place to being with through pure behavior. Thinking of women as people who fart and make lousy human decisions and who won't reward sex based on virtue kills that image, and some of the desire.

You just described the reason why the red pill exists. Those guys are "plugged in" so to speak and don't realize that there are other far more effective ways to get sexual/romantic attention from women. They are still suffering from "nice guy" syndrome, which causes them to believe that pouring enough favors and affection into a woman will make her dispense sex like some kind of sex vending machine.

I mean, she might fuck some of those guys, some of the time, but it's not going to be the type of enthusiastic sex she would be giving to the guys she's actually attracted to.
