I found out today that a broke coworker is eating junk food which is, by all accounts, bad. I find nothing appealing about it at all (and I am including taste and quality) but I'm like, "Ok, he must be into something about it, whatever." However, the sorce of the gossip tells me that he doesn't like it either, it just "gets the job done." She says this like it is a common thing. I apparently live a sheltered life, bc I had no idea that this was something anyone does.

I don't understand. Why on Earth would you eat something you don't prefer? What do you get out of it? I have never eaten anything but royal ossetra caviar, sweet butter-poached maine lobster tail and salmon with wince sauce. I get maybe eating something you don't like is considered ugly in the "mainstream" but doing it anyway bc you are actually into that kind of thing. But food YOU don't even find delicious- wtf?!?

The first girl I slept with was fat. I was not attracted to her, but I had low self confidence and didn't think I could do better (which wasn't proven wrong until I went to college). Mostly I was just anxious about graduating high school a virgin when freshmen at my school were getting laid.

But I could understand where the guy in your story is coming from. Sometimes you need to get off, and you have to go dumpster diving. Even in my case, I used to fantasize about other women while I was with her - it worked out well enough.

Men and women are different.

Men don't have sex with women they're not attracted to (your outlier example notwithstanding). And the woman he's hooking up with might not be hideous to him. And he himself might be hideous.

Women don't have to be attracted or have an emotional connection before they'll have sex. If the man isn't strongly attractive, she'll need an "emotional connection" or for him to show provider bona fides before she'll have sex with him. If she is strongly attracted to the man, she won't need anything else from him before she'll have sex with him.
