Female over in /r/confession has poked holes in her boyfriend's condoms to secretly conceive his baby and is planning to force child support from him if he leaves her. Men who've done this have been prosecuted for sexual assault and worse. Can someone forward this to law enforcement?

The Jezebel crowd has a vested in interest in perpetuating the women as victims narrative. I found this comment in your link to interesting:

This reminds me of how sick Dan Savage got of hearing defensive Christians say "we're not all like that!" in response to every story about fundamentalist homophobia, as though Christians were the real victims here.

AWALT and AMALT are perceived as micro-victimizations. Accurate or not, people feel like their uniqueness, their humanity, and their agency is taken away when they are thrown into these broad categories.

When men say feminists are AMALTing, they are asserting a type of temporary victim status. That feminists have inappropriately generalized about men as a whole, and are passing judgement based on that generalization. Men are the victims of this unfair judgement and the associated stigmas.

This is unacceptable to Jezebel et all, because the story they are pushing requires that women be the victims of male oppression. They are obsessed with '"who is the real victim" as seen in the comment above and the constant privilege olympics among SJWs for this very reason.

Something else to note about the comic strip in that article, is the #notallmen 'superhero' is used to ridicule a feminist making a generalization about men in a private space. It's interesting because that's exactly what bluepillers do to redpillers. When TRP does exactly what that feminist does, people cry misogyny. When feminists do it, even suggesting misandry is shamed and ridiculed.

My hypothesis would be that this hypocritical dynamic is due to the intersection of victimhood/generalization. Women are allowed to be victims, perhaps even assumed to be victims, and so when TRP generalizes it gets attacked, mocked, and accused of pseudo-intellectualism. But when Jezebel and mainstream feminists do it, it's ok because men can never be victims.

While they are both ways of controlling the gender narrative, #notallmen is a shame based strategy meant to silence male critiques of feminism. NAWALT as TRP uses it here on PPD, is more of a caveat used to express that redpillers understand that the generalizations they make will not apply to all women. On /r/theredpill itself, NAWALT may be more similar to #notallmen.

I don't know why people here keep asserting this. NAWALT in the man-o-sphere and TRP is a mocking inb4 some retard woman derails a thread by chiming in with it, the red pill position IS AWALT, they just understand it as a continuum of traits, but in every woman the traits lurking around to some degree and will express it in the right circumstances.

Any RP people asserting NAWALT in the manner youre asserting it here are just misrepresenting RP

NAWALT in the man-o-sphere and TRP is a mocking inb4 some retard woman derails a thread by chiming in with it, the red pill position IS AWALT, they just understand it as a continuum of traits, but in every woman the traits lurking around to some degree and will express it in the right circumstances.

This is problematic, mostly because it's a very unscientific way of understanding behavioral psychology.

With behavioral psychology, people are classified by behavioral traits, most commonly the 'big five"/OCEAN. If a hypothetical women has a trait, let's say she is highly agreeable, then it means that she is mostly agreeable in most situations. Will she occasionally be disagreeable? Yes, absolutely, but a psychologist wouldn't say that she's "disagreeable under the surface, therefore she's really a inherently disagreeable person." That just isn't how psychology works.

NAWALT is essentially this: "Yeah, many women are nice most of the time, but they have the capability to be mean, therefore they're really mean underneath it all, therefore women are mean." And you can replace nice/mean with any behavioral quality. It's pure rationalization.

NAWALT is essentially this: "Yeah, many women are nice most of the time, but they have the capability to be mean, therefore they're really mean underneath it all, therefore women are mean."

I think you're mixing up "AWALT" and "NAWALT".

AWALT is the assumption that regardless of how awesome and "different" a woman seems, you shouldn't be surprised if it turns out she isn't that different after all. NAWALT means just what it says - not all women are like that (whatever "that" in a given context is).

[–]CFRProflcopter( ͠° ͟ʖ ͡°)0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're right, I meant AWALT.

[–]FollowThisAdvice-1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And NAWALT is a term of derision on TRP, i.e. a true RPer doesnt believe it.

[–]exit_sandmanstill not the MGTOW sandman FFS0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Which has already been pointed out by HHL, and also why.

[–]homo_homini_lupus 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Nawalt refers to specific female traits though, not the big 5

[–]CFRProflcopter( ͠° ͟ʖ ͡°)2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You can apply the same logic to any kind of trait, big five or not. If a hypothetical individual exhibits a certain behavior, then you can label that behavior with a trait. That hypothetical person is not super secretly the exact opposite underneath it all. That isn't how psychology works.

Example: I claim that East Asian men are generally mean to street beggars. There's an East Asian man, and he's nice to street beggars 90% of the time. 10% of the time, he's mean to street beggars. The one time out of ten he's mean, I enthusiastically point my finger at him and say "Look at him! I told you, East Asian men are generally mean to street beggars."

That's essentially what AWALT is. A women may not be manipulative her whole life, but the one time she slips up TRP is there to say "Look at her! I told you that all women are manipulative underneath it all. It's just part of being a women."

[–]TomHicksAntifeminist sans pills[S] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So is NAWALT any different from NotAllMen?

[–]hyperrrealLoves fun1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Right, my understanding was that AWALT referred to potentials within all women that will be actualized to varying degrees depending on the context.

I think the reason it gets used like that here, is that redpillers don't want to have the AWALT debate every single post. And so you get the NAWALT qualification here a lot to head off the incredibly common "well I'm not like that" rebuttal.

/u/We_Are_Legion is right that we need to add a more in depth AWALT/NAWALT description to the sidebar.

[–]nope_nic_tesla6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Right, my understanding was that AWALT referred to potentials within all women that will be actualized to varying degrees depending on the context.

This doesn't make any sense to me. Everybody has the potential to do anything within the human experience. This is like saying "it is the nature of men to rape" and then defending it by saying "yeah, well, even though the vast majority of men don't, they all have the potential to!"

That's an asinine argument.

[–]hyperrrealLoves fun0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You can take issue with the specific formulation, but it's not asinine. To take violence as an example, there's a great deal of literature/art which examines what it takes to bring out aggression and violence in an otherwise peaceful person. What would it take for that potential, lurking in all of us, to come out into actuality.

Or in other words, that there are set of animal potentials within us, that may or may not ever see the light of day.

That's a different ontology than one which stresses the differences between people at the most base level. And it's not so much a question of which is right or wrong, as how productive either approach might be, and whether or not we can make an argument that potentiality is gendered in some way.

[–]FollowThisAdvice0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If that were the case then anything AWALT is also AMALT

There are no behavioural potentials within women that are not potentials within men. The distribution of degree is different, the average may be different, but if we are just talking potentials then its identical.

If I'm wrong give me an example.

[–]hyperrrealLoves fun0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm not sure what your thinking of when you say example.

But I think that hormone differences and socialization alone create different sets of potentials for men and women.

[–]FollowThisAdvice0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Can you give me an example of a potential or set of potentials for either men or women that is not also a potential for the other gender?

[–]ThirdUnderstudy 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I don't think TRP believes exceptions literally don't exist, just that most of us can't realistically depend on finding one.

[–]RedPill4LYFHeterosexual Red Pill Man1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

This. Most women around where I live embody all the nasty stereotypes you hear about over at TRP all the time. It isn't until I go on trips that I start meeting women who are of better quality.

[–]FollowThisAdvice-1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Stop living in a shithole then. and if you live there, presumably you are in a similar quality bracket

[–]RedPill4LYFHeterosexual Red Pill Man2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That was the plan originally, but if I was going to move, it would be out of the country. In the meantime, I have been putting my red pill knowledge to good use. Unfortunately, your assessment of where I live isn't far off from the reality, and that's why I've taken it upon myself to improve not just myself, but the community I live in from the inside out. I've made great progress to this end believe it or not, but I'm far from achieving my vision still.

I never would have had the courage to do any of this if not for TRP. I would have been stuck in my hateful anti-social ways for the rest of my life feeling completely rejected by society. TRP gave me the courage to believe in myself, to value myself, to take myself seriously, to push myself to improve, and to succeed at making something out of this life. I've gradually gotten past the anger phase and have grown to accept female nature for what it is, because TRP made me look in the mirror to see what the real problem with my lack of happiness in life was.

You can tell me I'm low quality all you want, but I know what I am. Even when I'm not working, I still stop to give people a hand all the time. I'm the guy who breaks to help people out when their car is broke down on the side of the road even if they are a woman, and not because I think they'll fuck me to return the favor. (That's blue pill Nice Guy thinking, and it doesn't work.) I'm the guy who will smile and nod if you look in my direction because I want you to have a good day like me. I'm there for my friends and family in a pinch every time. I even have female friends I'm not actively trying to fuck, and we have red pill views together because they see what I see. I'm not a saint, but I'm very honest about what I want with the women I meet.

I like traveling out of town to meet women from different places because it gives me a boost to my SMV being an outsider. It lends me an air of mystery that works in my favor. There's also the internet, too, so I'm not completely fucked living where I live.

[–]FollowThisAdvice-1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have no idea if you are low quality, but if you are high quality then you presumably have the means and talent to make a life elsewhere, so why dont you leave?

[–]FollowThisAdvice-1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

So why is it offensive when feminists make gross generalisations about men, but ok when TRP/manosphere make equally gross generalisations about women? Most feminists, even some of the most misandrist ones, at least concede that there are many male exceptions to their (bullshit) generalisations.

[–]homo_homini_lupus 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

So why is it offensive when feminists make gross generalisations about men

Who said this? Where did you see "offensive" in what I wrote?

Nothing is offensive, I don't experience whatever people are claiming to experience when they say the word "offended"

What it is is FUNNY because for about at least a decade now feminists and SJWs have been ruthlessly denouncing NAWALT. That's all

[–]FollowThisAdvice-1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Who said this? Its literally the premise of a huge proportion of TRP threads. "look what the feminists said now" followed by derrisive sneering and sniping.

I'm going to start using MWALT and MMALT. Most women arent like that. Most Feminists arent like that would also be useful.

Because a lot of AWALT claims seem to be based on Tumblr or a particular kind of low socio-economic small-town class of person. MWALT

This sounds like you are taking Jezebel seriously. I mean, this is the magazine where L. used to complain that clothes for plus-sized women look like French suitcases. And generally full of "look at how gorgeus this bathtube is" kinds of articles. Really fluff. But then again, the whole Gawker / Kinja franchise is largely about fluff, even the platform does not really lend itself to more serious publications.

So something like FHM.

Jezebel is a textbook example of what I meant - something that can occasionally look like activisim, but is not, just superficial people wenting between two cat picture level of post, the whole thing being more noise than signal, way below any normal level of stimulus threshold...

[–]hyperrrealLoves fun12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

While I agree with your overall characterization of Jezebel, I am interpreting that post correctly.

Because yes, it's not a serious piece. But the joke is "LOL at the neckbeard MRAs trying to challenge an aspect of our conversation."

I mean the post cites an article in Time, which describes #notallmen as "infuriating and unhelpful." Here's another quote from the Time piece:

It’s a sharp, damning satire of a familiar kind of bad-faith argument, the one where a male interlocutor redirects a discussion about sexism, misogyny, rape culture, or women’s rights to instead be about how none of that is his fault.

Again, the problem with #notallmen is that men are trying to impact and challenge discourse currently controlled by certain mainstream feminist groups. Feminists make sloppy generalization and men challenge it- misogyny. Redpillers make sloppy generalization and women challenge it- misogyny.

Women are viewed as victims, even when they are the ones making the mistake. And men are somehow responsible either way.

So yeah maybe Jezebel is generally fluff, but that doesn't change the reality of the discourse it's discussing. Or that people consider #notallmen to be a real issue. And pushing a lazy, harmful narrative in between cat memes and pictures of soccer players asses doesn't make it any less lazy, harmful, or sadly mainstream.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It really depends on if you buy into the perp-centric view of *isms ("don't be dumb and/or hateful, it makes you look bad") or the victim-centric view of *isms ("people can be victimized only of prejudice combines with power").

You sound like doing the former and I was raised in the former too, I am only recently learning the later, it is new and interesting to me.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

People take it seriously when it suits them however.

[–]FollowThisAdvice0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

NAWALT is used on theredpill the same way "unicorn" is - dismissively as if it isnt true, and in fact AWALT.

[–]xthecharacterdoes this dress make me look pretty?!0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Is not the bottom line that neither men nor women can be generalized as groups?

[–]hyperrrealLoves fun0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Obviously it's possible to generalize about men and women as groups. I think the issue is more how productive are these generalizations?

[–]powerkickPoly, Bi, Blue, Betafag6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

All men must be strong, outgoing, dominant, protective, and even violent. This is what traditional masculinity stipulates, and is what feminists like myself believe female disenfranchisement stems from.

YAM isn't an attack on men, the people. It's an attack on the characteristics of traditional masculinity that I listed above. "Ugh, I hate that men try to pick me up on the street and don't relent when I say no." Is something that one could say, but mean "I hate that masculinity requires that men be persistent in order obtain sex, even when it's inconvenient for one party and that party has voiced his or her opinion."

So to say Not All Men is to say "Masculinity isn't REALLY like that. We aren't ACTUALLY taught from a young age that in order to achieve anything in life as a person with a penis I need to display the above characteristics."

That's how I see it, at any rate.

First off https://archive.today/IzArO

For those of you who don't want to give this shit traffic.

Secondly, because statistically speaking not all men are like that..... a very miniscule portion of men actually ARE rapists (unless you subscribe to the theory that heterosexual penetration is rape). Rape is very rare, so it's not a bad defense to point this out when some feminist is spouting shit. Even if we were to take the 1/5 study seriously which we really shouldn't you still don't have much of a case for making these generalizations.

RP recognizes that literally all women are not like that and this has been repeated here and in the RP subreddit ad nauseam. However it is impractical and dangerous to not treat every woman as outside the standard. (Cucking, divorce rape, loss of custody, etc.)

And unlike the feminists men have good stats to back up their "irrational" fears, stats that confirm all that RP preaches, women DO have preferences that may confirm to the RP definition of hypergamy they generally like richer men, taller men (apparently some put the shorter male-taller female ratio at a laughable 5%, sorry r/short). A majority of marriages end in divorce, with most being initiated by women....... We see what's going on in China with the elite leftover wives and the marriageless male Chinese farmers..... a country with an excess of men has an excess of women who "can't" get married.

Even purple pill agreed (except for a few delusional bloopers) that if woman's income decreased relative to men marriage would increase and if it increased , the marriage rate would decrease.

In short you're arguing two similar sounding concepts, but with two immensely different data pools, and social consequences.... feminists try to implement oppressive and utopian laws in order to acquire "equality" and the other is a stupid dude you supposedly don't even like not considering you "marriage material". >.>

[–]cuittlerಠ_ಠ11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

And unlike feminists men have good stats to back up their "irrational" fears, stats that confirm all that RP preaches

Great, I'd love to see the numbers TRP has on "divorce rape"! Please list what percent of divorcees get paid alimony by their exes, and the average alimony award.

[–]ReginleiferOnly Zombies want female brains7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

Is alimony the only indicator for divorce rape you think is important though? You literally chose the most hard to obtain divorce award out there......even child support gets more of a priority than Alimony in States like California.

Considering the conditions necessary to obtain an awards (being faithful (states like , having a long enough marriage, and in some states having enough disposable income after child support) I wouldn't be too surprised if alimony awards weren't as common.

[–]cuittlerಠ_ಠ13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link

rape is very rare

According to RAIN, 1 in 6 women and 1 in 10 men will experience an attempted or completed rape. Not rare enough for me. And there's also the amount of rapes that go unreported, so it's likely higher than that.

Edit: should say in 2003 1 in 10 rape victims were male, according to RAIN "About 3% of American men — or 1 in 33 — have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime." Still seems high. :/

EDIT: FFS I derped again, the # of women who were awarded alimony in 1989 was 5,748, not 9,955. According to the US census bureau, in 1989 less than 1% (the amount of women receiving alimony in 1989, 5,748, out of the population in 1989, 246,820,000, or even halve that if you just want to look at women number of divorcing couples in the United States: 1,182,000 in 1990. And since alimony has been on the way out for decades, you can bet it's even lower now than in 1989.

https://www.census.gov/hhes/www/childsupport/cstabb.html

Edit: The number of divorcing couples in the United States was 1,182,000 in 1990

So "divorce rape" happens atronomically less than actual rape...does that mean TRP will stop acting like "divorce rape" happens to every other dude who gets married?

[–]an_absolute_roseRed Pill Boy4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

According to the US census bureau, in 1989 less than 1% (the amount of women receiving alimony in 1989, 9,995, out of the population in 1989, 246,820,000, or even halve that if you just want to look at women) of the US population received alimony.

Shouldn't you look for the percentage related to the population of divorced people?

Married and single women Dont exactly have the opportunity to receive alimony after all.

You're right, let's take a look. Is 1990 close enough?

The number of divorcing couples in the United States was 1,182,000 in 1990

5748/1182000

Edit: 5,748 not 9,955 my bad!

[–]an_absolute_roseRed Pill Boy2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You'd have to divide that by 2 and then figure which percent of those who received alimony were men before you find a percentage.

Let's say that 0 men received alimony in 1990. This doesn't seem too far fetched to me... Stats may prove otherwise... But that makes it so that one in six women received alimony in 1990. One in six, huh.

If more up to date numbers were available I would love to see them. I doubt they are though so I thank you for finding links.

[–]cuittlerಠ_ಠ6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

OMG I am derping hard today. Not cause of what you said, but because the amount of women awarded alimony in 1989 was actually 5,748 not 9955 which was the total who applied for it or were eligible i'm assuming. This is what i get for redditing before coffee, my apologies.

ALL WOMEN NUMBER

 Total 9,955

Awarded 1/ 5,748
--Supposed to receive payment 4,953
--Not supposed to receive payment 795
Not awarded 1/ 4,207

Note here the number of women who were supposed to receive payments vs actually received a full or partial payment:

Supposed to receive payment 4,953
Actually received payments 3,725
--Received full amount 2,546
--Received partial amount 1,179
Did not receive payments 1,228

You'd have to divide that by 2 and then figure which percent of those who received alimony were men before you find a percentage.

We have the number of women who were awarded alimony in the US in 1989: 5,748, and the number of couples divorced in 1990 (1,182,000, assuming 1989 and 1990 are relatively similar). If a couple = 2 people, we'd double it to find the true # of people divorced: 2,364,000

If 1,182,000 couples (or 2,364,000 individuals) divorced, and half were men and half women, you already have the number of men and women divorced that year: 1,182,000 men and 1,182,000 women

So TRP claims women in general take advantage of divorce and "rape" men by taking tons of alimony, but when we take the number of women who were actually awarded alimony, 5,748, and compare that to the number of women divorced, 1,182,000...that's still not even 1% of female divorcees being awarded alimony. TRP isn't concerned with men receiving alimony so why does that matter?

Also thats 89, I bet the numbers for alimony are VASTLY lower now.

[–]cuittlerಠ_ಠ0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Seriously though, did they just stop collecting data on this? Has the latest data not been released?

Wish someone with an insider perspective would comment on this, I've been searching for months and can't find much info past the mid nineties.

[–]FollowThisAdvice0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They dont collect data on alimony any more because it doesnt exist in most states. Its a strawman problem

"even" child support?

You think that child support, that is to say, the cost of upkeep for a child caught in the crossfire of a divorce, is not particularly important?

[–]ThirdUnderstudy -4 points-3 points-2 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Child support is under-the-table alimony. Otherwise it would be based on the cost of raising a child.

[–]babyguineapig5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

How much do you think it costs to raise a child? Put a roof over their head, gas, electricity, food, school fees, Dr, dentist, shoes, clothes, etc... I just shelled out $12k for orthodontic work for my eldest. Kids aren't free just because you want to go screw your secretary.

[–]ThirdUnderstudy 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Puff Daddy pays more than that every month, and it's not because his kids are somehow more of a burden. Pretty much every state applies a formula taking into account the non-custodial parent's income but not the realistic needs of a child.

[–]FollowThisAdvice0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Dont the needs of the child depend on their lifestyle before the divorce?

Should a kid really be forced to move to a poorer area and a shittier school because his dad doesnt want to pay anymore?

Isnt protecting kids more important than protecting the wallets of the adults who caused the divorce?

And child support is paid from women to men too you know.

[–]babyguineapig-1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Can poor old Puff Daddy not afford to keep his kids in ponies and trips to Disneyland like all the other Hollywood kids?

[–]ThirdUnderstudy 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What his kids get isn't up to him. The mother could spend it all on herself without any consequences.

[–]babyguineapig-1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Which is totes likely.

men are five to six inches taller than women on average, so to prefer a taller male is almost to prefer average. unless the stats show that women are marrying men more than five inches taller on average, then how is this an issue? according to these stats - http://www.theatlantic.com/sexes/archive/2013/01/why-its-so-rare-for-a-wife-to-be-taller-than-her-husband/272585/ - the height difference in married couples matches the five - six inch number.

people (including you apparently) misread divorce stats - http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/19/health/19divo.html

To be fair I only said the marriage rate would decrease because it would eliminate the women marrying for resources and not something a bit more genuine. Like him.

The women marrying for love would still marry.

# NotAllMen is used ironically by women and/or feminists.

NAWLT is used ironically by men and/or manosphere-ists.

Although I don't think the Twitter women are necessarily the women RPers have been debating on Reddit, so technically no hypocrisy was had. Most people I know on Twitter don't know what Reddit is, let alone the "manosphere."

[–]FollowThisAdvice1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They are shitty arguments when used ironically by either side.

Ever since that notallmen hashtag went live, its been my go-to explanation for why NAWALT fallacy is something feminists at least should really disagree with. I never really received an answer for why it isn't hypocrisy.

This article should be read so that every instance of #NotAllMen is replaced with a NAWALT, and you get RP's sentiments.

sidenote; /u/cuittler, can we please define NAWALT in the glossary? It really is incomplete without it.

Thank goodness I always kept out of debates like this, of both sides, and hardly ever even experienced stuff like these debates in my life except the vague recognition that some websites are weird.

Political activism is an organized effort with a clearly defined goal to get a government to change laws. Beyond that, sometimes simple and short awareness raising campaings may make sense. But beyond that, no kind of activism or "fighting" worths a hoot.

When two groups of people are just angrily yappering at each other with no serious goal in sight... they are children. Just being angry at other people or posturing as this or that is not activism. What is, even, the goal? Everybody who ever participated in GamerGate is a child, not only because of the childish behavior but also because they are arguing about toys.

Seriously the whole idea of activism related terms (activism for rights, fighting for a cause etc.) got somehow hollowed out. Just everbody grow up please. If you don't have a clearly defined goal, usually legislation, just get on with your life. And by life I don't mean Tumblr ffs.

But... I think this happens when a young generation finds himself/herself in a bad job market with not a great future in sight to work forward, and 7/24 internet access. It is cat pictures and yelling at each other.

[–]southwer1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

there is nothing wrong with cat pictures, sir. :I

[–]We_Are_LegionAutumn Red0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

That's a simplistic understanding. Don't get me wrong, I dislike feminism's modern first-world iterations as deeply as the next guy. But what you're suggesting is politically non-viable. What you're advocating is a laid-back approach that will be outcompeted every time by a focused, consistent effort.

The fact is normal people are busy. And uninformed. They aren't usually fighting for change. And they tend to not realize when they need to take action and tend to not work together very well when they do. So, when they get roused for a cause, the people doing the rousing is usually a well-known group involved in the area.

Activists apply consistent pressure towards a clearly defined ideal, if not clearly defined individual goals, and leap on opportunities as they come by, to create change. Adopting individual goals(symbolic usually, if they're after a change in mindset or attitudes) time to time in crescendo moments. The downside is that they really need those crescendo moments and they need their cause to constantly be given relevancy. The bad activists manufacture it, which is where I humbly think feminism went wrong.

[–]FollowThisAdvice0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree with everything you've said bar the last half sentence.

I think even bad activism is good for democracy. I'd rather have people who care pulling the consensus in either direction than for inertia to keep things from changing. Even activists on the opposite end of the political spectrum from me are worthwhile if they promote conversation and get people taking a stance.

Social change is a laudable goal.

[–]homo_homini_lupus 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

Isn't NAMALT exactly the same thing as NAWALT? NAWALT arose to make fun of the women who come into forums and threads when men are talking about women to say "Not all women are like that!!!" as if that matters to the discussion of what "women" are like, and usually to derail the thread into a special snowflake discussion about how great they are. Now Jezebel is reacting to NAMALT in the EXACT same way the man-o-sphere responded to NAWALT--Because EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS that NA_ALT is implicit in ANY generalization or stereotype, so pointing it out is stupid.

[–]TomHicksAntifeminist sans pills[S] 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yes it is. I want to see how BPers address it though.

[–]FollowThisAdvice0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

We agree - NAMALT is just as dumb and unreasonable as NAWALT.

[–]xthecharacterdoes this dress make me look pretty?!0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Don't you mean the opposite? AMALT and NAWALT are equally dumb, no? Men and women are not homogeneous groups that overarching statements can be made about.

[–]FollowThisAdvice1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, I mean NAMALT and NAWALT as ironic put downs to someone claiming a posited general rule isnt true.

[–]another-thingBlue Pill Man0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The thing about "not all men" is that it's (more often than not) unironically brought up in response to a valid argument on sexism. We know that not all men are like that- that's obviously true. Unless someone is saying that all men are rapists/pigs/trash/etc, then playing the "not all men" card is avoiding the issue and you are complicit in the misogyny.

[–]DoldenbergBlue Pill Man-1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're ignoring that those two are used in entirely different contexts.

"Not all men" is used by men infiltrating feminist discussion to disprove an accusation that was never made. A feminist might say "There seems to be problem with sexual assault", and then some dude will chime in "But not all men are rapists!". Yeah, sure bro, but the feminist never said so, why do you think you need to clarify that? Do you honestly think that adds anything to the discussion?

Meanwhile, "Not all women" is used when someone is literally asserting that all women are somehow "like that". For example "All women have rape fantasies". Or "Women are naturally more inclined to being a stay at home mom". In that case, "Not all" actually STARTS the discussion, by questioning why we should always define what one should do by what a greater group they belong to is supposedly inclined to do.
