The same thing happened to me.

I applied for the same position in two different cities.

The first interview, I showed up and answered the questions intelligently and sharply, very eloquent and confident.

The second interview, I just relaxed and just made myself likeable.

I got the job during the second interview, not the first.

Same thing happened to me again, a friend tried to get me in to where he was working. When the person in charge of hiring saw my transcripts and grades, he commented to my friend that they are a lot better than his ever were and I ended up not getting the job.

Don't outshine the interviewer, try to be likeable.

The older you get the more you realize that a lot of getting the job is whether or not the person interviewing you thinks you’ll be pleasant to work with. You can be the most qualified candidate and interview the best but if you come off like a know it all asshole no one is going to want to have to spend 40 hours a week with you.

There’s hard skills and there’s soft skills. Lots of people lack the soft skills.

Oooh boy story time

First of all, shit like this happens all the time and it’s the reason I hate corporate world. I’m doing the bare minimum not to get fired and pouring every ounce of energy into the business plan I’m working on.

Now for my experience.

I was interviewing for my first job out of college. Interview was late senior year. It was a rotational leadership program with a few months in a bunch of departments, so we got interviewed by each department head as well as the program coordinator who would ultimately be making the decision.

8 applicants, 2 spots. Interview consisted of all day at the office, most of which were individual interviews with the departments but then there was a presentation everyone had to make about themselves and an example of how they solved a problem in front of everyone and all the other applicants. Then there some technical questions that went along with the presentations. So all the candidates got to see each other’s presentations.

If I didn’t have the best presentation, it was definitely the second best. And I absolutely nailed the technical questions. Got all of them correct. And I went second so I didn’t have the advantage of going last and hearing all the previous technical questions (they weren’t the same for every applicant but they were similar so the people who went last had an idea of what type of question would be asked)

Most presentations were pretty good, one was awful, and me and one other guy’s were easily the best. I was the only one who got all of the questions right, a couple people got one Or two wrong and a few people really bombed (<half right). So sounds great right? It was u til the dinner started.

I show up to the dinner and sit down. It was one long table for all 8 applicants, the program coordinator who was responsible for choosing the hire, and 2 other department heads. The program coordinator was sitting at one end of the table. The first two candidates who got there sat right next to him. I got there 15 min early, was the 4th or 5th candidate there so I sat near the middle of the table. End up sitting next to the other guy who had a great presentation and across from two department heads. I immediately start talking to the three of them and we all get along great. Turns out all three of had a lot in common. Pretty soon half the table is engaged in our conversation. I can tell the other candidate who had the great presentation was pretty redpill, we got along a great.

A few minutes in I realize that I haven’t talked directly to the program coordinator yet. So i try to bring him into the conversation two separate times

Well I guess mr program coordinator was not happy about our conversation taking the limelight because he completely withdrew from us. He ended up forming his own little group with the two candidates sitting next to him. Started showing them pictures of his newborn. Only talked to the two of them.

That’s when I started having a bad feeling. And sure enough, guess who gets the job? The two sitting right next to him. One had the terrible presentation and the other had a pretty good one but she did terrible on the technical questions.

This is the bullshit we deal with every day in corporate world.

When it comes to job interviews the outshine the master idea gets a pass for me. If he's interviewing me I want someone leading me that is both confident in his abilities and recognizes his own position ad the leader enough to not feel threatened. You can't outshine a master in an interview because it's in their frame, but once you're actually working if you do things that make him look bad and make you look good, that's when he has something to prove.

Plus, if the outshine the master effect does happen in an interview, you don't want them as a boss. No promotions for you and prepare for the grunt work because your boss is insecure.

Self evaluate yourself and figure out if you're doing as good a job as you think.

I've found the only time I get call backs and job offers is when I truly don't care about getting the job. I lean way back in the chair, relax, take my time to answer, speak slowly and calmly, and don't worry about whether or not my answers are the right ones.

The jobs I'm excited to interview for because I really want them are the ones I get ghosted on, because I speak to fast, my thoughts are going a million miles a minute because I'm trying to spout out all the right answers, and I come off really nervous... because I am. Then there was that one time three women interviewed me that were all former LA Laker cheerleaders while I was still bluepilled...

It doesn't matter what your answers are, so long as you aren't pure idiot and they aren't technical questions.

Based on this post there’s a very real chance you came across as arrogant. In saying that an attractive girl on entry level roles will always have the edge over guys. Especially for jobs like marketing or accounting that anyone can really do, just need a degree

Impossible to maintain frame in the corporate world, you are their bitch and they are your master. It just like politics, doesn't matter what you do (unless you're on the elite level), its all about if you're the "right fit" and get along with the decision makers and have bare minimum skills to do your job.

I think your boss looks have nothing to do with looking for a job. In your situation the guy interviewing clearly is a insecure guy.

What you should get from this is the red flags of working for someone like that. It’s a good thing he didn’t choose you because you would be stuck working for a guy who makes poor decisions, can’t lead, probably has poor social skills, has no power.

One thing I can tell you about interviewing is that your not there to make the interviewer look like a dumb ass. Treat an interview is if your gaming and vetting a woman. Have good vocal tonality, sound interested, make eye contact. Answer some questions out of logic to break the ice and show you have social skills and then answer the question. Last is ask probing questions to understand the work flow and culture. This has to purposes. It shows your interested and it gives you some intel on what you might be facing. Maybe you don’t want to work in a place that sounds unorganized. They won’t say that directly but based on their answer if they unsure or certain you can piece these thing together.

Good luck finding a gig. They will be hiring for true smae position in 6 months.

Understanding the world as it stands is critically important, but extracting useful feedback for yourself is even more so.

It's always easier to blame someone else than it is to blame yourself. Not saying that you are definitely 100% wrong but consider the possibility that you contributed to your fate. That's were your growth points are.

I'm not sure you know how the interview process works. Was he really berating other people (i.e yourself) or was he checking that you actually had the knowledge you said you had on your CV? Maybe you came off too rehearsed, too artificial.

Something similar happened to me. I was super confident. I also maintained eye contact with the guys interviewing. The main guy couldn't look me in the eye for more than a second.

I was very qualified for the job. But I guess he was intimidated. For a 40 year old guy I'm swole as fuck. Huge traps, arms, legs the whole bit. Guy was scrawny and weak.

I got a blue collar job eventually. The guy was a guy's guy. Maintained eye contact and cussed. The first job was a white collar job behind a desk btw.

You’re right but also consider this.... You’d likely have to report to that guy. Ultimately, the interview process is as much “you” evaluating whether or not the organization is a fit for you.
