There are varying degrees of commitment. Calling each other boyfriend/girlfriend is commitment to exclusivity but it's a very easy-to-break, low level commitment. Cohabitation/financial entanglement is a higher level of commitment. Then engagement, then marriage.

Having children is a commitment to the child but not really a commitment to the other parent, at least not by default.

The idea that having kids together is a commitment to each other is ludicrous. Millions of men have kids with women and they arent with the woman. They just send the check and visit the kid. They can marry another, date and fuck whoever they want and do as they please. There is no romantic/familial "commitment" to the WOMAN in having kids with her.

Dating/courting is nice but really not that serious.

Dating is not really a commitment, even if you agree to be exclusive with one another. Marrying, buying a house together, and having kids together are all commitments, with having kids as the greatest, since you’re basically signing up to take care of someone else’s needs for the next 18 years or beyond. 27 f redpilled.

21, Female. Tbh at the current stage, a gf label would be one form of commitment But the ultimate form of commitment would be marriage

I think my view generally is: Friend - not committed FWB - not committed and deffo shouldn't be step 1 imo Bf/Gf - together, should be committed, seeing if they'll be future husband and wife Cohabitation prior to marriage - not a stage in my book but same as the above Marriage - ultimate commitment

Your word. Either you keep it or you don't. If you keep your word then you are commited to it. If you don't then there is no commitment.

STR, LTR, Marriage, kids... all of those mean nothing unless the parties say what they are commited to do and then follow on what they say.

That is how weak commitment is today. It is as weak or strong as the will of the one that speaks.

Commitment is actions. Words are nothing.

Being faithful, living together, signing the marriage contract, buying things, becoming a better person, doing what benefits both instead of just yourself and carrying his children to term are different aspects of commitment.

Commitment is entirely internal these days. It's more likely the more entangled you are, but nothing stops anyone from just walking away at any point. So you can be entirely committed without any trappings. Or you can have legal marriage, kids, a house, all that, and gone the next day. I've seen both. Experienced both.

I'm a dude, over forty, been married. Have kids. Currently have several partners, girlfriends, subbies. Have had one collared to me for more than a decade. Not gonna marry or have kids with her. But I'm committed to what we have. Have been so for far longer than any of my marriages.

For me its:

Dating > Relationship > Sex > Marriage > Kids

Sex would be the part where most of you would disagree with me. But for me personally it's a much bigger deal.
