I saw the opposite on TV too. Did Steve Urkel get laid all the time? No. Did Screech? No. Look at the Geek to Chic makeovers on TV. The moral is change your looks and attitude and only then you will improve.

Fry and Leela. Revenge of the Nerds. Beauty and the Beast. Krillin and Android 18. A lot of old sitcoms where the husband is the oaf with a decent-looking wife. It's a mixed bag, really. There are seemingly just as many portraying the "Chad fucks" theme as there are ones portraying the "homely men get the girl" theme.

It usually happens through some cheesy interaction between the two. The type you would expect to see on movies/TV because it rarely happens that way in real life.

I mean it just makes fucking sense that this is the overarching case. If nothing else other than Because directors want to put hot chicks on television.

I'll refrain from arguing about other motives but flat out, women on TV skew attractive far more than men do because, which customers want to see hotties more?

The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family are two current. Men are given more range in having more to offer than just looks. Women are still primarily judged on looks so the standard hasn't changed for them. Anytime media tries to show an average women people go into "body positivity" and "accept yourself is not normal" mode. People don't even question unattractive men on TV.

Something about Mary is an example. The awkward less attractive guy actually completely lies and makes up a false biography for himself to try to win her. Meanwhile she’s literally dated an NFL player who’s hot and also perfect and loving to her and family, and the one thing he did wrong that led to her dumping him ended up being a false rumor. He’s a perfect NFL player but then the hot chick decides to go with the awkward guy who constructed elaborate lies. It didn’t even have the justification where the hot guy is secretly a liar and the nerdy guy is honest. Pure wish fulfillment.

The simpsons, family guy, george lopez, boy meets world, kim possible, all the spiderman movies where he ends up with mj... idk man any family sitcom from the 90s onward

When tv began there were strong male role models left and right. The “loser” getting the girl was also never shown to be a thing. Male heirarchy was basically portrayed as the important and honorable aspect of society it is.

Eventually the prevailing cultural meme of the wise patriarch or suave alpha gave way to the less threatening, bumbling, schlublike, emasculated, misadventure-having dad who “tries his best” and has a heart of gold. Also at this time the meme of the perennial school reject beating the odds and getting the hot girl who got tired of dating the meathead high school quarterback because she’s actually deep like the reject became a thing. Both these memes were implicit critiques/deconstructions of masculinity or male heirarchy which became popular as the “real men” of the 1950s and 60s (john wayne, sinatra and that whole generation) started to be replaced by stereotypical limp wristed artsy fartsy types who hated, rather than loved, the traditional social fabric of america

This is the format of most "family/situational" sit coms at least in the past. Probably because the writers are ugly dudes who wanted to date the hot chick in high school. Rarely do you see a plain or ugly female lead with a hot dude, you do see an attractive but not necessarily hot woman land a hot guy if she is playing a chick with a dick character like a cop/FBI/sugeon where she has some extrodinary ability/talent and no emotional expression.

Neelix and Kes on Voyager. Neelix was annoying as hell and also a terrible jealous boyfriend, not to mention hideous.

In the 2012 movie Bachelorette Lizzy Kaplan ends up getting back together with her ex-boyfriend, played by Adam Scott.

Modern Family has two separate hot woman/ugly man marriages. I think Sophie Vergara's character is supposed to be a gold digger so it makes more sense (never got into the show, haven't watched in many years, don't recall) but the other couple is also super mismatched.

It does seem to have become less of a thing in recent years because they figured out they could make more money from people perving on hot actors than they could from feeding that particular male fantasy.

The simpsons is one of the biggest offenders. Comic Book guy got married to an attractive manga fan who just walked into his shop and started dating him within one episode. Most of the main "father" characters (Homer, Kirk, Clancy, Dr. Hibbert) are with women who are better looking, or are at least thin. Even Moe was briefly with a hot midget.

The "fat, ugly schlub, hot wife" meme is one that is just about everywhere.

It conditions men to believe you can walk through life looking like Jim Belushi and score someone better looking than the average New Jerseyan without having Jim Belushi money.

It also conditions women to realize that they're eventually going to have to "settle" for someone like that and live with nothing but sarcastic contempt for that person forever.

That new adam sandler one on netflix, Jennifer aniston gets all into some rich old chad like guy then is proven after some ridiculous charade that her beta husband is the best after all.

Watched that tv show til death do us apart on netflix as well(thanks GF) and the beta guy doesnt get the chick but all of us feel bad for him and the chad guy gets murdered at the end(spoiler alert.)
