I've never received bees, but I imagine the package isn't air tight. Bees breath via vents on their bodies as they don't have lungs. Shipping of live animals is carefully regulated. Worker bees cannot go air mail. The queen can. But she has to have no more than 8 attendants.

I buy a lot of baby chicks. They can only ship via USPS Priority Express. FedEx & UPS do not take them. It works because they're still drawing nourishment from their yolk for the 1st three days of life. Breeders & hatcheries will typically require a minimum of 6-12 chicks to help regulate body temperature & they use special vented boxes that are divided into compartments that each hold 12 & have easter grass-looking paddinf. They usually put heat packs under that & include little cups of energy gel in case the chicks get delayed in transit. The post master usually calls me at 6am as they're coming off the truck & they meet me at the side door to pick them up. Of the 2000 or so I've gotten, I think we've had 3 DOAs. That said, I will not be ordering any more chicks until the mess with Captain Bonespurs & the USPS is straightened out.

One of the best things you can do to help bees is to stop consuming almond milk & switch to more ecologically sound alternatives like hazelnuts, which are pollinated by the wind instead of bees. The California almond industry is devastating bees.

“Only queen honeybees and female worker/attendant honeybees can be mailed via the USPS. “

“When going by surface mail methods, your shipment will need special care, and if you’re shipping queen honeybees or female worker/attendant honeybees via ground transportation, you would need to add the Special Handling fee. “

“The mailpiece should be constructed in such a way as to provide adequate air and ventilation—a temperature range of 40° to 100° F is recommended—and secure enough to prevent any bees from escaping.

A third consideration is strength, as you need to avoid having your box getting crushed during transit. There are a number of solutions, including using screened wooden rectangular boxes or reinforced bee shipping boxes.

For mailpieces sent by surface transportation, you must mark your box on the address side with the following descriptors: “Live Bees” and “Surface Only/Surface Mail Only.” Plainly mark “Live Queen Bees” on the address side for mailpieces sent with queen honeybees.”

“You are only able to ship bees if they are disease free! Also, USPS won’t ship bees to any location where insecticides have been used.”

“If you want to ship bees, you’ll be restricted to shipping queen honeybees and regular honeybees. Unfortunately, that means you can’t ship bumblebees, carpenter bees, or those huge black bees that terrify everybody. Also, whole honeybee colonies cannot be shipped.”

“Most beekeepers ship out their bees in wooden bee packages, and the most popular transport package is known as the three-pound honeybee package. “

“Here’s the good news: bee packages can be shipped in their wooden containers! Therefore, you don’t need a special USPS box (such as when you ship day-old chicks with USPS). The most important thing to worry about here is making sure the box prevents any bees from escaping, and that the box is strong enough to not get crushed during transit.”

“ The proper temperature range for honeybees is 40-100 degrees Fahrenheit. USPS is already aware of this, but it never hurt to double-check with your local USPS worker when you drop off your bees at the Post Office”

“USPS will insure your bee shipment and you can purchase additional coverage if you declare its value.”
