Nice. My first job paid $63.5k a year at 22 (engineering) . I currently live alone in a small apartment and make $70k base + 10% shift premium ($77k total) at 26 in a low-cost area and have been saving like crazy. Student loans have been paid off since 2015. I drive a paid off beater. I've maxed out my 401k for the past 2 years and maxed out my IRA the past 5 years. Current net worth is about $160k. Stay single, live cheap, and stack your money in index funds.

So here's some encouragement for you.

You're already doing better than 90% of your peers in the same age range.
You don't have a wife and a kid so you're doing better than 30% of your peers in the same age range.

Now here's some unsolicited advice

Don't go blowing your $1,300 paychecks on stupid shit just because you can. I was in the same situation at 19 as an apprentice electrician and I made a lot of catastrophically bad decisions with money that I'm just now recovering from 11 years later.
Calculate a weekly and monthly budget so you know exactly where every single penny is going. Figure out exactly how much you need to live (food, rent, gas, insurance) and set that aside. Whatever is left over you should consider taking half and putting it in savings until you have 6 months of living expenses saved. The other half should be invested in either a Roth IRA, or medium risk long term investments. I suggest getting into the marijuana companies right now solely because the exponential growth will make the microchip/dot com boom look like a minor up trend. PM me for suggestions but do your own research. Lastly, you should set aside some money for entertainment and hobbies. Making a lot of money does nothing for you if you aren't enjoying it.
Make sure you go in to work reasonably early, with a positive attitude and be professional. Say sir and be direct with people. The software industry is notoriously casual but what will set you apart is your attitude. A good, "can do" attitude, dedication and dilligence will take you very very far in any industry.

Don't just listen to me though, if my advice works for you then keep it but if it doesn't, then don't. Whatever you do though, whatever decision you make, just make sure that it is deliberate and most importantly that it is your decision. Most people are stupid on the aggregate and you should never listen to stupid people for any reason.

This so great i'm almost a decade elder to you and I started making good money early on as well and I can assure you bro if I had gone my own way at your age I would be a millionaire right now or near abouts. Be wise with your money man, that's the only advice I can give you. And when you save money, don't save up in a bank, invest, if inclined learn about crypto, stocks and also metals, precious metals are the safest investment, followed by in my opinion land (longterm)and then you get into speculation like stocks, crypto, commodities etc. There are many ways to make your money make money, start learning now and investing on a small scale until you get a hang of it.

I highly recommend the book, "The Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham to get started, he was Warren Buffet's mentor.

Put 1/10 of your take-home income away in an investment (start off with ETFs for ease and less expense).Do a monthly dollar cost average (ex. every month buy $1000 worth of the ETF regardless of price--you'll buy more when the stock market is down and a little less when it is up--in the long run you'll have bought more which will give you a great "nest-egg" when you're in your 40s or 50s--probably allow you to retire). This takes discipline and you have to promise yourself not to touch the money before a certain date unless it's to be used to literally save your life.

Max out your 401k every year dude, even if there is no match. I started at 23 and am very thankful for it. Wish I would have started even sooner. You gotta max out every year, you can retire at 40, that is my plan. Max out 401k, buy a modest place asap and focus on paying it off. When your 40 you will have a paid off house, plenty in the bank, and a blooming 401k that should be close to 600k or more.

Programming is nice. Started on this in 2016. Worked with C#, PHP and ultimately Angular/Java and Python.

Got hooked on infosec and infrastructure, however. Started working with this last year.

IT is a great area if you want to grow up. But remember: NEVER STOP STUDYING. Technology changes every minute. You need to update always. If you stop, you literally die.

Almost forgot: INVEST! Take what you need for living. Take control of your money and don't overspend. If you can, live with 40% of your paycheck. Invest the other 60%. It'll pay off on a long term.

Believe me: The best thing in life is to get in the end of the month and see that extra money that just entered your investments account.

Mix it up. Stand, kneel, sit. Use a standing desk or one of those kneeling chairs or whatever they are if possible. Take little breaks and move around. Stretch.

When you get to my age your neck, back and shoulders will let you know you sat way too much for all those years and they never shut the fuck up about it.....

Hell yeah bro congrats. I finished my degree early in 3.5 year by working part time and taking classes and then took 4 winter classes while still working part time, and got my internship converted to a full time job. Now I'm 22 and making $60k a year in IT and work is just a mile from my house. Just bought a Nissan Skyline r33 gtr in Japan that I'll be importing in next year when it's legal. Now I'm spending less than half my salary on rent and saving up the rest and will start putting funds into my 401k. The rest of my friends are either still in college or in interships/lower tier jobs.

It's easy to get forward in life when you leave toxic people behind in life. I spent all of 2018 working on myself and spending time with friends rather than supporting a depressed girl all of 2017 and things are really looking up. Best of luck 👍

Glad for you OP. I'm a dev too. Learn as much as you can from the job, not just technical stuff but soft skills like understanding the culture (what they say vs what it actually is), persuasion, communication to get what you want.

If you happen to work on a hot tech stack, start building something on the side, maybe a little more serious than a personal project. It may lead you into starting your own business. Having tasted that water, I assure you, once you go your own way (no pun intended) you'll never like regular gigs. After all, why climb some ladder when you can build your own rocket? Good luck!
